Character Idea.

Hello, reading over some of the 'Getting Started' stuff and I see that the character concept I had in mind may not work. Yet, I figure I would ask here and maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

I've always been a fan of 'woodsy' 'outdoorsmen' like characters. Yet, it specifically states that there are no small-town or anything of the like. How would one go about with a Ranger like concept in mind, or is that an idea that should just be scraped?

You can have an outdoorsman. Someone in pretty much every city will hunt, fish, chop wood, forage for edibles or herbs or dyes, etc. (Though a PC can have only one job, so you need to focus in on how they'll really be making their money.) But someone who is highly capable in the wilds, a 'ranger', takes some time to work up to. You have to build up the skillset to really support that career.

The classic path might be to start out as a hunter, work up weapon skill, Land Navigation, Wilderness Survival, Cooking, Foraging, and other skills. Also build up your character's IC knowledge about the landscape, flora, fauna, etc. around your home city. Then, when you have the skills to make it feasible, transition to being a wilderness guide, which is probably the single closest occupation on the price list.

You might even be able to start as a wilderness guide up front, since strictly speaking the pre-req is simply Wilderness Survival skill... but when it comes down to it, a starting PC's skillset and lores really don't stretch very far against all the dangers in the wilds.
