Rayage did not know if it was a good or bad thing. Karte, her Master when she was but an apprentice, has begun taking a much more intimate role in her Mastership than before. Since the ring was collected off the island she had yet been introduced to the exact roles of the Masters. She knew that they were busy, but she was busy too with her own work and ambitious experiments. It was her mind and her dreams which earned her the title of Master here on the island, along with the Alchemical skill and ability rivaled only by a Parsminy Karte. The Master was useful, and possess techniques and understanding of alchemy rivaled by Pycon himself. Though Alchemy was the only thing she could rival him on, of that she was sure.
Regardless it was Kartes more active role that had led her to stand where she was today. He insisted that she looked at the citadel in a new light, and stop being so ‘narrow minded’ in her approach. Sahova was more than research and development. She needed to be more active as a Master, become a presence in more than just her own mind, supported by more than just her own research. If she wanted to survive as a master she needed more than just paperwork and projects to throw at her adversaries. She needed support, flesh and blood, undead support. She needed to gain favor from other wizards and masters alike. She needs presence, and not just ‘an upstart’ like she had been so labeled.
It was for those reasons she was here, abandoned her lab to be here. Just outside the Citadel she stood, alone, but not, just apart from the groups which had gathered around the spectacle. Below her feet a network of intricate runes and glyphs marred the earth. They spanned and curved, reportedly, around the entire citadel. Such a thing surely could not go unnoticed, right? Though as she looked down at the glyphs she could not help but wonder who could possible do such a thing. The ways that they flowed and married into one another, holding and supporting each other perfectly, the configuration of the glyphs were profound and most likely to stabilize some sort of magic.
Being a world wizard Rayage was intrigued by the design. Someone far more skilled in glyphing than she created this. She was not the only one out here, around here were entire groups of wizards. Masters were horridly scribbling on parchment, no doubt trying to preserve the runes, and apprentices tried to aid in the matter too directed by their respectful master. The groups of mages, outlined and lead by their respective masters, dotted the parameter of the circle. They talked in hushed and hurried voices. Some were more excited than others. The topic at hand was the mysterious circle.
She had heard from one of the louder apprentices that this was a summoning circle. The said apprentice was quickly scored by the master for raising his voice too loud. The fact did not strike Rayage, as she knew almost nothing about the art of Summoning. The very word brought back memories of Evalin, and the girl who could reach across worlds and bring to her aid creatures from otherworldly sources. It brought back memories. It was the reason she had saved her so long ago, to preserve the knowledge which lay in her head. Evalin could have been useful, if Master Rayage did not so epicly screw up, leading to their eventual fallout.
”Master Rayage.” A voice called her attention, and she turned to see none other than Karte. ”I am glad that you could find time to see this.” His voice was not as serious as it was when he had talked to her before, and if he was genuinely glad she could not tell. He approached, walking up to her before standing by her looking down at the mess of rune and glyphs, ”This is unlike anything we’ve seen so far. To bring such epic level to a design this complicated to span the entire Citadel. It is impressive indeed, especially considering that it but appeared overnight.”
Rayage thought about it, ”This was not the work of one person then?” she thought out loud, ”No, such a size… it has to be a group of people.” she said, reaffirming her own beliefs as she looked down at the glyphs more. ”If it was a group, then it should show in the glyphing. There should be different styles or errors in the style of glyphs used, much like handwriting.”
Karte watched her think about the circle with a smug, almost knowing smile, ”There is great debate even among the Masters the purpose and origins of the circle. If it was one wizard then it should be evident by the style of glyphs. If it was more, that too shall be evident. Or so it is said.” He never confirmed or denied her suspicions. It was just like Karte, remaining on neutral ground, watching from the background. He never took a side, even Rayages, so it seemed. He had always left her to figure things out herself, and it seemed like this time it would be no different. He challenged her to think for herself, and for that lesson, she was eternally grateful.
