A delicate bloom

Seirei listened carefully to Naiya's words, considering them closely. It seemed hard to be believed that she would ever be treated like family here after the way she had been treated so far. And yet, the other woman's words stirred something deep within her. It gave her hope, however small, that things could change for the better. Naiya's apology, and obvious remorse made her feel slightly better, too. It helped to remind her that not everyone felt the way the people in this crowd did.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, too." she said softly, with a small smile.

Naiya told her that she had to get her animals home, but that she too intended to visit the strange silver chest. When asked if she would help her, Seirei was quick to say that she would be happy to help. Naiya seemed nice, and if she could make another friend here in the city, Seirei hoped to do so. It would make living here until she could escape more bearable. The other woman's camp was set up not too far from the market. It was at the edge of the city, but still well within the protection the city had to offer. Lian's camp was in a similar location, placed near the edge of the city, but safe within its boundary. In fact, it wasn't all that far from this camp. They weren't neighbors as such, but they weren't that far from it.

Seirei took the offered seat by the embers, and the cup of cool milk with sincere thanks, and a smile. Now that she was nursing the twins, she often had a craving for milk. But it was a craving that was rarely fulfilled. Lian didn't own his own herd, and it was rare that he thought to buy any. And few people were willing to sell any to her because she was a captive. Those that did often wanted to charge her twice as much, or even more than what they would charge a Drykas for the same amount of milk.

The twins settled down quickly now that they were away from the angry crowd. As Seirei waited for Naiya, she thought about her own gift for the chest. When they were children, Jared had braided two bracelets made out of dyed horse hair. Both were black, but one had a dyed strip of blue running through it, and the other had a dyed strip of purple running through it. Jared had given her the purple one, and kept the other for himself. He had promised her that the two bracelets were linked together because they were made from hair from the tail of the same horse, taken on the same day. In fact, he had gathered himself as Seirei had watched, so she knew it to be true. Jared had then told her that as long as she wore her bracelet, he would be able to watch over her even if he wasn't there because he would always wear his bracelet.

It had calmed Seirei to know her older brother was watching her when she was a child, and it had soothed her out of many nightmares if she could just rub the bracelet gently until she fell back to sleep. But when she had woken up in the Sea of Grass, Jared's bracelet had been wrapped around her wrist , and linked to her own. Looking back at it now, Seirei realized that Jared may have given her the bracelet so that if she did manage to survive, she would have a reminder of him. She could even appreciate the thought of that. From that perspective, Jared was doing the best he could for her.

At the time, though...Seirei had seen it as the worst sign of betrayal. Not only had she been abandoned to die, her own brother thought so little of her that he wanted no reminder of her existence. No proof that he had ever had a sister. It had been as though he was telling her that he would no longer look out for her. That he was no longer her older brother. And that had hurt very deeply.

So these bracelets would be her gift to the chest. Her offering to the gods if they were the ones who had sent the chest. If Jared wanted to think of them as strangers now, then Seirei would accept that. She would cast off their past together when she offered the bracelets to the chest. And if Jared had meant the gift to be a kind one, well...Seirei still needed to move on. Dwelling in the past, and focusing on what she had lost would do her no good at all. She needed to face her future, and prepare for it as best she could. That future did not include Jared in any significant way. Offering the bracelets to the chest was as good a way of saying goodbye to both Jared, and her past as any.

Seirei considered offering one of her mother's keepsakes to the chest as well. But her mother was dead. She had already said her goodbyes to her mother. Memories of her were not what was holding her back. But in saying goodbye to Jared, and her past with the trade caravan, she hoped that she would be releasing the pain of their betrayal as well. That could only be a good thing as she moved on with her life, and looked to the future.
Seirei looked up when Naiya asked her if she was ready to go. Then she smiled, and nodded. It would be good to let go of the past.

"I am." she said simply.

[Silver Chest Event] Saying Goodbye

Postby Naiya on August 27th, 2015, 8:01 pm

The rope that bound the bundle of purple fabric together also served as a handle as she led the way back out of the camp. It wasn't hard to find the chest, the people were flooding to see the miracle, if the whispers and awe weren't enough, the trampled path was plenty to follow.

Further away from chest, there were whispers, some, she noticed, were whispers of the magic, the others were different, more hostile, although nothing evolved into the full on heckling of before.

Naiya couldn't help but to wonder if this was how Seirei was always greeted, and how that might change her dealings in the city. Or prevent her from dealing at all in the city.

It was upsetting that such things should happen, that there might be other captives treated so poorly. As they grew closer to the box, the whispers grew. More talk of the box, louder and accompanied by exclamations as one person or another detailed what they had seen or been given.

Other whispers were upset about the captive, how she approached the magic from their gods as though she was one of them. Naiya was reassuring to her companion, and cutting with the people.

"If you make these children cry over your nonsense," Naiya spoke sternly, her voice pitched low to carry, "We'll have to have words with ankals about the way you treat mothers and their children."

She gestured for the woman to go ahead. She could make sure she got her chance with the magic of the box, and no one would question Naiya's own opportunity.

Seirei was happy to let Naiya take the lead as she led the way back out of the camp. Once again, as people noticed her, they scowled. Several commented on her "failure" to serve her master properly since she wasn't pregnant again. Seirei tried to ignore them as best she could, focusing on the twins, and making sure that the noise of the crowd didn't bother them. Fortunately, there were nothing more than muttered comments. No one approached her the way they had earlier. Seirei had to wonder if it was Naiya's presence that held them at bay. And if it was, she was very grateful to the other woman for being there. Naiya seemed nice, and Seirei hoped that she might have made a friend in her.

When they arrived at the chest, there were several dark muttered comments about her daring to "pollute" their gift from the gods with her presence, and that she shouldn't be pretending to be one of them. But again, no one approached her, or tried to prevent her from approaching the chest. Naiya gestured for her to go first, and Seirei responded with a grateful smile. Then she moved to stand in front of the chest.

At first, she simply stared at the chest in awe. Was it truly a gift from the gods? What else could it be? Surely no magic available to mortals could create such a thing. The chest itself was quite beautiful. The ornate designs on the chest made Seirei want to make a chest of her own. A wooden one, of course, rather than one made of silver as this one was. Her designs would have to be simple ones, though. Perhaps a pattern that would resemble grass, maybe. That would be fitting since Endrykas existed in the Sea of Grass. Though, on second thought, it might be wise to start small. A jewelry box or something similar rather than a chest. She could work her way up to that.

But that was for the future. There was a different task at hand now. Seirei took her bracelets off slowly. Letting them go felt like she was letting go of part of herself. And in a very real way, she was. It was something she needed to do though. She couldn't look to the future and move on with her life if she were trapped in the past. So she had to say goodbye to her past. She would never forget Jared, and the caravan she grew up with. They would always be a part of her. But she wanted...needed to let go of them. They were no longer a part of her life, and she was no longer a part of theirs. By saying goodbye, she hoped to be free of the pain of their betrayal.

Seirei placed the bracelets in the bottom of the chest gently. She hesitated for a few ticks, then closed the lid on her past.

"Goodbye Jared." she whispered as she watched the chest to see what would happen.

As the heavy lid fell closed, the magic of the chest claimed Seirei’s gift with a bright flash of light; the gods had spoken, if the gods indeed had anything to do with this, and no one could proclaim any longer that this captive was not deserving of the rights afforded to every Drykas man, woman, and child in Endrykas.

When the chest was opened, surprised gasps and low whispers raced through the crowd, for there, nestled in the silver chest was a young colt so new to life he did not yet know the strength in his legs. Thunder rolled overhead, low and angry. A tremendous boom roared above the crowd and in the distance, the faint drumming of hooves as a wind-born mare tore through the city to claim what was hers; both rider and colt. She was beautiful and undeniably Strider.

The crowd made way as the Claybank danced into the area and bowed her head to sniff at the buckskin colt. She encouraged him to stand, her muzzle worked over his neck and within no time the foal was on his feet, strong with long legs and a beautiful disposition; he would make a fine stallion one day. The mare had a distinctive white marking hidden under her fringe in the shape of a crescent moon, while her foal was marked in the same spot with what looked like a small sun.

Tentatively, the mare approached Seirei to sniff at her just as she had the foal before bowing her large, elegant body by going down on one knee. A rumble rolled from within her and out through her velvety, soft nose. The mare refusing to rise again until Seirei took her place on the animal’s back. “Ride!” A small voice from the crowd encouraged, that of a young boy who had been forced to witness the distress his mother had caused the captive with her nasty remarks.

The sky boomed again, seemingly echoing the boy’s words, ride, it grumbled.

A delicate bloom

Seirei didn't know what she had expected to find when the lid opened...but a beautiful young buckskin foal definitely wasn't it. She stared in awe at the tiny new life for several ticks. Seirei knew that she should get the foal out of the chest, but she was afraid of hurting it if she tried. After a few more ticks, she reached into the chest and lifted the foal up gently. Then she set it down carefully on the ground next to the chest. In doing so, she learned that the foal was a colt. Seirei reached down, and stroked the colt's fringe hesitantly. As she did so, she noticed a small sun shaped white marking. What could that mean?

The crowd surrounding the chest murmured amongst themselves, but Seirei paid them no heed. She had eyes only for the young colt. In her eyes, he was perfect in every way. Thunder roared overhead, low and angry. Were the gods trying to tell her something? And if so...what were they trying to say? A peal of thunder roared above the crowd once more. Thunder? Was that the colt's name? If so, it was a fitting one.

Seirei heard the now familiar sound of hooves drumming faintly in the distance. Startled, she turned to find the crowd parting to allow a beautiful strider mare pass through. The mare seemed to dance as she approached her foal. Her foal. Of that, Seirei had no doubt. Seirei watched as the mare nuzzled the young colt, encouraging it to stand. It worked, and Seirei saw that he had long legs. From the mutterings of the crowd, she gathered that this was a good thing.

The mare approached Seirei tentatively, and sniffed her. Seirei held herself utterly motionless as she did so, barely daring to breathe for fear of frightening or angering the beautiful creature. Then the mare lowered herself, going down to one knee. Was she supposed to get on? Judging from the look in the mare's eyes, the answer was yes. So Seirei obeyed, climbing onto the mare's back gingerly. When the mare stood, Seirei clutched at her mane in the attempt to keep her balance. Once she was relatively confident that she wasn't about to fall off, she stroked the mare's neck gently, apologizing for clutching at her mane.

"Ride!" came a small voice from the crowd.

The speaker was a child, and a boy judging from the voice. Thunder boomed again, and the sky itself echoed the boy's words. If that wasn't a message from the gods, then Seirei wasn't sure what was. And who was Seirei to disobey the gods? She would love to ride...but she didn't know how. Fortunately, the mare seemed to know this, because she held perfectly still so Seirei could keep her balance.

Seirei already felt a strong connection to the mare. And through that connection, she felt a powerful love for the foal as well as a fierce need to protect him. Perhaps it was because both she and the mare were mothers. Seirei glanced at her twins, wanting to see how they were handling all of this. They looked around with bright, curious eyes, seemingly fascinated by what was going on around them. Not even the thunder had frightened them.

Thoughts of the twins often reminded Seirei of their father, and this time was no different. Lian. What would he think of all of this? To him, she wasn't really human. She was nothing more than a brood mare. There was no way he would believe that the colt was a gift from the gods, or that she had bonded to the colt's mother when she came for him. No, he would believe that she had stolen them. Lian would be furious...beyond furious. What would he do to her? Seirei paled at the thought of the punishment she was likely to receive at his hands.

Seirei turned to Naiya, who seemed to have just gotten her own gift from the chest.

"Lian..."

Her throat closed with fear. She swallowed hard, and tried again.

"Lian's going to be furious. He'll think that I stole them. I'm his captive. He doesn't see me as a real person. To him, I'm just a way of getting children. He'll never believe that I could bond to a strider. I'm not human enough to him for him to accept that."

Seirei shuddered. Her entire body was tense with fear. And the signs that accompanied her words betrayed her fear and anxiety.

"He'll..."

Seirei shuddered again. She knew that there was a very real chance that Lian might try to kill her in rage for daring to steal a strider. He would never believe that the colt was a gift from the gods, and that his mother had bonded to her.

[Silver Chest Event] Saying Goodbye

Postby Naiya on August 28th, 2015, 6:24 pm

From the chest emerged a colt, a beautiful buckskin barely able to stand on his own. Naiya felt her words had been proven true, the chest would not have worked for someone less than a human as some people seemed to think the captives.

But there was more, a crash of thunder and a rumbling of hooves was their only warning as a claybank strider danced artfully through the crowd. She was a beautiful mare, and she was Seirei's. That was obvious, she had raced through the city to lay her claim both to rider and colt, and a sense of pride filled Naiya at the scene.

Seirei was bonded, a Drykas full, the truth of it clear to any who saw her as she climbed upon the mare's back. She was beautiful, the mare clearly in understanding with the woman, a link of spirits.

It was a sight to behold, and Naiya could hardly look away, her grin so large that she was sure it would split her cheeks.

Naiya approached the chest as the woman became acquainted with her gift, a simple signing happy, honor given to the woman as she moved to give her gift to the chest.

Her bundle of cloth was not large, and as she placed it into the elegantly carved chest she felt it was small, tiny really. She was passing on a part of herself, the person she had been for nineteen years. It was a whole life she left behind when she got married, an entire being she said goodbye to. Yet it took so little space, folded into a bundle of belongings that hardly took room in the chest.

Such a large part of her she was to be rid of, to move beyond. She almost removed it from the chest, took it back home in her arms, with Rue clutched to her chest.

She wasn't Rue any longer, though, she was Naiya. Naiya Dawnwhisper, and she had come here to say good bye.

That was her prayer as she closed the chest, the message in place of another prayer. Not good bye, but farewell.

"Farewell, Rue Nightsong." She spoke the words aloud, but the closing of the chest drowned them out.

[Silver Chest Event] Saying Goodbye

Once again the lid went down on the silver chest and everyone gathered around the mysterious crate waiting to see what would appear this time. A bright light traced the chest full circle and when the lid was lifted, there in the bottom of the chest, sat a neatly folded cloak of the finest blue silk.

When Naiya lifted the item from the chest she would find that her gift unravelled into a full length cloak with long, fitted sleeves, a deep hood decorated with the same Drykas markings as the silver chest and a pair of matching, elegant gloves; one buttoned to each cuff. The garment itself was fit for royalty; not even the gods would turn their noses up at such a finely crafted piece of clothing; but what use did it have?

Naiya would not know before she took the cloak home and tried it on and even then it would take the observation of a loved one to tell her. When the cloak was on during the day, it was just as it seemed, a beautiful cloak that women envied and men turned their heads to see, but by night, the cloak’s magic made the wearer completely invisible; mirroring the surrounds as if it were made of running river water.

A cloak like this was dangerous, secret, mysterious, and invaluable. A cloak such as this should never fall into the wrong hands. By night the only way to find Naiya would be to follow her tracks in the dirt, if any were forged; for the cloak left no scent trail and the tall grass did not seem to bow, but instead, let her pass through without a sound.
