I promise I'm not that scary..
Summer, 70, 515

With this new body, Bakar finally realized something. She no longer had the correct undergarments. Sure, she could wear the same clothes as the previous body, albeit cut and uneven. But she never had the correct clothes to start with in this case. She shook her head and left her room, making her way to the market to buy some simple clothes. The man beside her noticed her again, and gave her a friendly nod, which she returned. Her body was still becoming accustomed to her unnatural presence, so she didn't bother putting on any makeup. She was just pale.

She went through the maze like corridors of the dimly lit fortress, passing beggers and merchants, civilians and knights. Some of the knights were attempting to move along a begger, who was insistent that they were doing nothing wrong. It escalated, and the knights were forced to subdue the man, and carry him to the jail for investigation. "If you're going to beg, do it out of sight of the knights.." Bakar whispered to herself. She hadn't resorted to begging yet, but it was clear that it was frowned upon. Knights didn't want them "dirtying" their streets, she assumed.

She finally arrived at the Bazaar, and went about looking for a clothing stall where she could buy some cheap clothes. She held onto the frames of the stalls to keep her balance, and some of the stall owners shot her glances and watched her carefully, making sure she wasn't stealing anything. As she was walking past a particularity crowded stall, she was shoved aside, and she stumbled.. right into a knight. She quickly pulled herself away from the man, and apologized profusely, staring at the ground. Upon looking up, she was greeted by a familiar face.

"O-oh.. I'm sorry Garland, I was just here to get some things real quick.. I got pushed, and I stumbled.. I'm glad it was you though.. I-I mean, that's not to say it's good that I fell into you, but if it was anyone else I'd be scared they would drag me away.." She slumps forward and breathed a "sigh" of relief.

As usual the bazaar was as crowded as ever. Today though, he didn't have a Benshira to keep him company, or a hot-headed female squire to talk to.

Garland yawned, and walked blindly through the crowd, having a limited attention to what was going on with him. The packed streets were just hot and annoying in the armor his was wearing.

Suddenly he was felt a body press against him. He looked at the small girl that knocked into him. "Are you alright ma'am?" He asked and the girl turned around to face him, she seemed all a flustered.

"O-oh.. I'm sorry Garland, I was just here to get some things real quick.. I got pushed, and I stumbled.. I'm glad it was you though.. I-I mean, that's not to say it's good that I fell into you, but if it was anyone else I'd be scared they would drag me away.."

Garland couldn't help but notice that this girl knew his name. Usually people would know him due to his deeds, or more accurately, his blunders. Fame is fleeting but infamy is forever.

"Ah, No problem, Ma'am. Umm... Have we met before?" He asked and looked closely at her face, he was sure he hadn't met someone this pale before... Well... One, but he was sure that that Nuit was a he.

"Well, you're rather pretty, and it's rather hot out today, are you sure you want to be wearing all that clothing? And it seems a bit big on you? Are they your brother's or something? Oh, I'm sorry to pry." He said and gave a comforting smile to the disguised Nuit. "I'm sure we haven't met before though... Though my memory is horrible. Mind reminding me?"

I promise I'm not that scary..
While Bakar was rambling, she didn't even realize the confusion on Garland's face until he spoke. "Have we met before?" Now it was her turn to be confused, but as she was thinking about it, his next words reminded her of the new situation she was in. "Well, you're rather pretty, and it's rather hot out today, are you sure you want to be wearing all that clothing? And it seems a bit big on you? Are they your brother's or something? Oh, I'm sorry to pry." Garland flashed her a genuine smile. He was so trusting, it gave Bakar some hope for the future. But it also made her worry for him. If someone was planning him harm, it didn't seem that hard to get close to him.

She tilted her head before remembering fully. "Have we met befo-Oh. Oh, I'm sorry. I must have confused you for someone else. Excuse me." She turned to leave, not wanting to explain what was going on to the confused, young man. He forgot sometimes, that others don't really know how a Nuit survives. She was so used to changing bodies at this point, she forgot that it's foreign to others.

She really didn't want to correct Garland after he just called her "pretty".. Bakar wasn't really sure how he'd react when he learned that the "pretty" girl in front of him was dead, and Garland knows him as a man, not a "pretty" girl. She couldn't help but think of what he'd do. "You're disgusting" She whispered to herself, very quietly. "And that's exactly what he'd think to. He'd be horrified. Just don't let him know."

In her rush, Bakar turned and almost walked into a stall. Catching herself before she did, she tripped and fell backwards. Into Garland. She trembled with embarrassment and sadness, overwhelmed by the situation she was now in. She felt like crying. And she did. Stress finally catching up to her she just cried.

"I'm sorry Garland. I'm so, so sorry." She apologized, but still offered no explanation, stressed to the point where she wasn't able to think straight. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry." She whispered, not even really talking to him anymore.

"Have we met befo-Oh. Oh, I'm sorry. I must have confused you for someone else. Excuse me." Garland was confused and was just about to call out to her, but it seemed her clumsy feet did his job for him. She stumbled back and landed on Garland's chest again.

Garland grabbed the woman's arm gently but firmly, she was cold to the touch, even though it is hot at the peak of summer, and with so much clothing on... Something doesn't really add up. "I'm sure we've met before..." Then it hit him, that stutter, that nervous shifty eyes, the cold pale skin. "Bakar? It's you, isn't it?"

He couldn't help but smile to his undead friend. "Bakar! It is you!" He gave her a quick but firm hug. "So... Why are you a girl? Is this like morphing or something? It has been a while! I have so much to tell you, my friend! Where are you headed? I can accompany you, just like old times!" He said and gently made room for Bakar and him to make their way deeper into the Bazaar.

"Oh, how are you doing Bakar? We haven't talked at all for a few seasons." He said and guided him-er-her through the crowd. He had no idea that Nuits needed new bodies and such, but he did know that their bodies decay, he just thought that they use some sort of magic or some Nuit juice to keep the body from decaying.

"It's kinda loud out here, we should talk later inside, we should go eat or... umm... you don't eat right, I forgot. Sorry." He blushed with a smile on his face. "Oh! I've got really big news and I've got to share it with you later!"

I promise I'm not that scary..

She was dumbfounded. Was she really so transparent that he could see through her so easily. She was stunned for a moment, and didn't even react other than to blink when Garland hugged her.

"So... Why are you a girl? Is this like morphing or something? It has been a while! I have so much to tell you, my friend! Where are you headed? I can accompany you, just like old times!"

He barely gave her a moment to respond before he stepped aside and offered her a place to walk beside him. Shook out of her stunned state, she took the spot beside him and walked slowly with him through the Bazaar. She reverted to her mind racing, a million thoughts going through, thinking of a way to explain this away. Her mind settled on the only rational way to handle this. Just tell him.

"I... I am doing alright." She said slowly, trying to think of exactly how to explain the situation without scaring off the man. "It's kinda loud out here, we should talk later inside, we should go eat or... umm... you don't eat right, I forgot. Sorry." He blushed, an action Bakar was perfectly fine with losing. If she had blood pumping through her, she would have been blushing since bumping into the squire. "Oh! I've got really big news and I've got to share it with you later!"

"No, no. It's alright. We can search for something. And we can talk at length about this, while you tell me this big news of yours." They continued walking until they found a place to sit and rest, and Bakar started explaining all.

"I'm sorry it's been so long, Garland.. I really wasn't expecting our next time meeting would be under these circumstances. I guess.. I guess it's time to explain to you. This is not a form of morphing.. Since.. 'birth'", Bakar put emphasis on this word, trying to convey that the start of a Nuit was the start of a new life. "Nuit are born rotting." Her voice trembled. She was scared to continue. She herself was uncomfortable with what she did, she didn't want to tell Garland how she has lived all these years. She figured that he'd at least earned it however.

"Have I ever told you how old I am?" She asked, already knowing, but speaking anyways, just to ensure. "50.. That's just since I became Nuit. 50 years I've been this.. parasite." She squeezed the last word out vehemently. She hadn't wanted it to go like this, her sharing her full feelings towards her life, but she couldn't help herself. Words just flew out of her mouth against her will.

"I take the vessels of the dead and use them for myself." She trembled as the final confession finally came to a head. "I live in a corpse that is not my own." She swung her arms up and gestured to herself. "This women you see before you is not me. Nor was the man you knew before. I am never me anymore. I am a parasite, bound to flesh that denies my existence. That's why we rot. These vessels know that we do not belong and do all they can to force us out. We let the dead rest not, and they are angered for it."

At this point she was fuming. Fuming at the man who made her this way, long dead. Fuming at the Gods who allowed such a cruel fate. Fuming at her life, and the way things had become. And finally, fuming at herself. Her weakness. Of being unable to end the cycle of her undeath. She was shaking now, unable to stop. She spoke quietly, telling Garland this, but not really wanting him to hear.

"I am dead, Garland. I should not be of this world. I am unnatural." She was crying at this point. These are the thoughts that were at her mind recently. Either foremost, or at least silently festering in her subconscious. These thoughts finally given words. She felt some relief for this. But more than that, and above all, she felt anger. She had grown to hate herself, and it showed. She was tired of this life, and was lost. She was unsure what lay ahead, and waited silently, awaiting Garland's cries of surprised and disgust. Awaited the screams of "Monster!" That would undoubtedly come from his lips. Awaited her first and only friend, in years, to denounce and scorn her.

She wanted to get up and leave. To not even give him a chance to reply. But there was still the tiniest spark of hope in her mind that was not giving up, no matter how large the dark became. It fought with all it's might, and it was holding it's own against the insults of parasite and monster. This was the one thing keeping her here. That hope was willing her to stay, surely, surely this man would understand.

OOCOooookay then. That went on longer than I thought it would. So sorry! D:

"I am dead, Garland. I should not be of this world. I am unnatural." Garland just smiled and laughed. He grabbed Bakar's hand tightly, trying to comfort her.

"Bakar, you do know what 'parasite' means don't you? It means someone who takes and hurts their victim. I don't see anyone getting hurt here, do you?" He said and wiped away the tears that were rolling down her cheek. "The body you have and the bodies you've had before would have just decayed anyway, if there is still a use for them, I say use it. The souls of the dead don't stay with the body, Bakar."

He couldn't help but give a big smile to show her that she was doing alright with her new life. "Bakar, some people might say you're unnatural, but that's just their opinion, I see this as a chance for a second life, don't waste this." He stopped and pressed his hand on Bakar's cheek.

"I can tell you've wanted to tell someone about this for a long time now, it must have been eating inside of you." He gave a solemn look at Bakar, pulling her close for a hug. "You're not a monster."

He saw that there were a few people looking at them, he would usually not care of such a thing as rumors, but his significant other is quite... hot-headed, and might not take kindly to Bakar and might... injure her or worse.

He let go of Bakar and looked around. "Why are you here in the Bazaar anyway? Are you buying some make-up or such? I can't help but notice you're not wearing any make-up today."

I promise I'm not that scary..

That hope had paid off. Garland had been doing all he could think of to make her feel better. He laughed, he held her hand, he wiped her tears. All things that he had not experienced for over 50 years. Even in his old life he didn't have someone close enough to do this things with, it had been his mother that had last done those things. It felt odd that now would be the time that he experienced these things.

He pulled her close for a hug. A hug that relaxed her greatly. He went limp against him and closed her eyes. "Thank you Garland." She whispered, before weakly hugging him back. Ending the embrace, he asked a question that made her unsure how to answer, although for a different reason this time. "Why are you here in the Bazaar anyway? Are you buying some make-up or such? I can't help but notice you're not wearing any make-up today."

"Oh... I'm here for.. undergarments." She turned and whispered that last word, embarrassed to be telling Garland. She quickly switched to the second topic before he had time to respond. "I use the makeup to hide the darkness of my eyes.. I.. I just changed into this body.. it is not yet accustomed to my presence, and hasn't darkened quite yet. But.. it's starting. I do need to get some more soon."

"What was your big news?" She asked, changing the topic to distract him from the first response.

That small amount of hope had grown slightly. Knowing that not all abhorred her, it was gaining strength. It was still not as large as the hatred she recently started harboring towards herself, but it was growing. How large the hope was didn't really matter though. Even if the roles were switched, and the hatred the size of the tiny amount of hope, she wouldn't feel much better. That tiny hatred that would survive would be her own hatred towards herself. Her fear of other's reactions may someday disappear, but she wasn't sure her own would leave at all. She couldn't help but think of this briefly, before returning her full attention to Garland.

Garland saw that Bakar was feeling a little bit better. He couldn't help but smile that his severely depressed friend was feeling better, he looked over to the crowd, keeping an eye out for trouble while Bakar was telling him why she was here.

"Oh... I'm here for.. undergarments."

"Wait wha-" He turned to look at her with mild surprise, but she quickly changed the subject before he could respond properly. "I use the makeup to hide the darkness of my eyes.. I.. I just changed into this body.. it is not yet accustomed to my presence, and hasn't darkened quite yet. But.. it's starting. I do need to get some more soon."

"Oh, right." He was still recovering from what she said, but he stopped himself from asking about it mostly because it was rude, and what would he ask? What your size is? It'll be weird and just stupid to ask.

"What was your big news?"

Garland paused and his face absolutely beamed. "Oh! Oh! Right! I'm gonna be a father!" He blurted out and coughed into his hand to try and regain his composure. "Well... I hope I'll be a good father. Never had a child so I'm fairly nervous about this." He said with a uncharacteristic solemn look on his face.

No matter how many people try to comfort him and boost his confidence, there was always a sliver of doubt resting deep inside his heart and mind. "Well, I'm sorta nervous about being a father and all, but I think I can do alright. I might leave the my squirehood for a bit to earn some coin, well... unless I could become a knight in a span of a season, which is highly unlikely. Hopefully, mercenary work wouldn't be dried up in Syliras, since the knights are basically a merc force in itself. Though a bit more strict and with higher standards."

He stopped himself before getting more depressed and returned his attention back to Bakar. "We should go to the Elegant Weave if you want to buy some... clothing there. Oh! Right, I sorta met another Nuit a while back, Isolede or something, I can't remember her name, we sorta just introduced each other and moved on. It was Sayana's birthday party then, so it was somewhat hectic. Shame you weren't there. Anyway, she's a squire, and you might like her I think." He said and thought a bit about Bakar herself. "How have you been by the way? Specifically."

Bakar blinked in surprise. A father. She didn't know what to say. "Oh, oh geez. Congratulations! Who's the lucky girl?" As she looked over at him, he looked.. sad. A look that was not so good on his usually beaming face. She poked at his chest with all her strength, which amounted to the slightest push on his balance. "This is a good thing." She said to him reassuringly. "Being a parent isn't going to be easy. There will undoubtedly be rough patches. But the mere fact that you're willing to leave the knights shows that you already have your child's best interest in mind, and that's all a parent can ever do."

She had never been a parent herself, but she had been a child. Her parents had done their best with her. Or.. him at that point. And she liked to think that she turned out okay.

Another Nuit.. she had not met another other than Benoit. She had always been curious about her kind, but without a larger frame of reference, she really can't be sure how the rest of her kind really is. Was the average more like her, or Benoit? Was she the oddball, or him? Would they share the same views on their life? The chance to talk to another Nuit like herself would be nice. Maybe they could come to a conclusion to these questions haunting her mind together.

"Yeah.. I'm sorry I wasn't there. As you know, I don't get out much. And when you don't see someone for seasons at a time, it's hard to make plans."

"Me? I'm alright.. I haven't been doing much else, other than my work at Li Mauta, and sitting in my room.. I've been trying to get out more. I meant to get in touch, I really did. I just.. didn't know how I should..." She spoke softly. She really didn't want to offend Garland.

They made their way towards the Elegant Weave. Bakar really didn't have a whole lot to spend on clothes, but she really didn't think that they could be that expensive. She enjoyed her time with Garland. It reminded her of old time, when they had first met. She smiled honestly for the first time in a while, and felt relaxed.

When Bakar poked him, he was sent back to reality. "Oh... Thanks, yeah you're right, I should be happy, but I'm just a bit nervous is all."

He couldn't help but notice Bakar's smile when they were walking, he hadn't seen her smile before, even when she was a he, he never really noticed any smile on the Nuit's lips. "You know, you should keep smiling, it suits you, really it does."

He wasn't mad at Bakar for being evasive with him, he understood that he had trouble with social interactions, in fact he should be the one apologizing. He had remembered where he met his wife-to-be, and what he was doing before he decided to help her on the docks.

"Yeah, funny story actually. I was originally heading to where you work, and then I met her almost getting crushed by several barrels of fish, I helped her out and we sorta... clicked, I asked her if she wanted to meet up sometime, she said yes. a day later we went for lunch and then a swim in the spring, and a day after that... ummm... stuff happened... yeah... stuff..." He was blushing now, his face was a like a red apple. He rubbed his face a bit to try and remove the blush he had on his face. "So, I sorta got side-tracked when I was planning on visiting you."

He opened the door into the Elegant Weave and let Bakar go in first. "I would offer to do the talking, but... a man asking to buy female undergarments might sound a bit strange." He said with a tiny smile and walked behind his undead friend.
