Asher knew he wasn't very skilled at keeping still. He wasn't impatient, but he couldn't go without fidgeting or twitching or something. It made hunting difficult, and if it wasn't for his wife teaching archery lessons, they probably would have been very poor indeed. He once confessed he felt bad for not providing as he should have, but Meyarra waved it off with a, "You'll learn, it's not overnight. Remember, you were training to be a knight just a couple years ago." So he didn't feel so bad that he lacked skill. He just wished the twitching could stay someplace he could ignore, like his nose or his legs.
Sadly, it was twitching that brought him sitting on a fallen log, panting in exhaustion. His left ring finger twitched right as he loosed an arrow, and it somehow sent the shot wide. Not only did he scare off his kill, but he seemed to aggravate something big and growly. He didn't really bother to take a look at it, because as soon as he heard the growl and the fast rustling, he sprinted in the opposite direction. It must have been large, though, because it kept up with him for a while. But Asher swerved around trees, sometimes turning back in the direction he came, and it was enough for the beast to lose interest. Just in time, too, as Asher knew he wouldn't have been able to keep running for much longer.
There was a new problem, though. As he caught his breath and looked at his surroundings, he realized he didn't know where in the forest he was. He took so many turns, he didn't know if he was still facing away from Syliras or towards it. There were no streams about, either, so he had no way of knowing how close he was to the Avitar River. He sighed, pushing his disheveled hair out of his face. A twig must have snagged on his bun to pull it out of the hair tie. He'd have to fix it.
That moment, he heard rustling again. There wasn't any growling, but the beast could have gone on the prowl instead. He nocked an arrow and pulled it back, aiming carefully at the bushes currently swaying. His heart ratcheted up, pushing harder against his chest as he waited. But instead of some beast, a woman burst through the brush. Asher blinked in surprise and quickly lowered his bow, allowing the relief to come over him. No beast, just a Konti.
