AppearanceRace: Human - Svefra
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Birthday: 75 Winter, 491
Starting City: Zeltiva
Birthplace: The Suvan Sea, among the Whitecrest Pod.
AppearanceLightly tanned from his time in the sun, sailing across the Suvan Sea, Tarlen's wild black hair and dark grey-blue eyes betray his heritage as a Svefra. Tarlen wears a loose, white linen shirt with homespun pants and salt stiffened leather boots. Over his shirt – on those occasions when he elects to wear a shirt instead of displaying his tattoos - is a fur coat that Tarlen insists he crafted himself from the hide of a bear that he killed with his hands while on shore leave. This claim has been the subject of more than a little bit of scrutiny for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that the coat is made of wolf pelts.
Character ConceptTarlen Lastcrest is rarity: A Svefra without a pod. He's spent most of his life wandering from port to port in his casinor, the
Molla, often trading whatever fish he'd caught and baubles he'd carved on the journey there in exchange for supplies to keep the
Molla well supplied and in good repair. As a result, his grasp of land-lubber culture is much stronger than that of most Svefra: He's able to remember that snatching up peoples' unattended goods is generally considered impolite, for instance.
Personality: Tarlen has the fondness for alcohol and the swagger that you'd expect of a lifelong sailor. He's bombastic and cocky, loathe to run from a fight or back down from a challenge that he clearly can't win. While not stupid - he won't sail into a storm for no reason or pick a fight with a squad of Syliran Knights - he often doesn't think too hard before swashbuckling his way into dangerous situations.
He was more than a little traumatized by the loss of his pod when he was eight and left without any real hope of proper vengeance when he learned that the slaver who killed his father was killed in a shipwreck two months after ravaging his pod, the only slim hope of any vindication he has left is the hope that he may someday find his mother or his childhood friends, Yalla and Elias. Unfortunately, they've proven to be absent in all of the ports that he's explored so far, and he believes them dead.
With no true hope of finding Yalla, Elias, or his mother and no hope of finding revenge because the sea already claimed the ship, captain, and crew who tore apart his life, Tarlen is more than a little bit salty when someone pries into his life and his business. Even the horrors that he's been though haven't been enough to dampen his Svefra spirit, though, and Tarlen is generally fun to be around, frequently bantering and joking with the people around him.
Ethics: Tarlen doesn't give much thought to morality beyond a few core rules to which he adheres and (sometimes unfairly) expects other people to adhere:
- Don't bother folk that don't bother you. (No Murder, slavery, or otherwise harming innocent people.)
- Show respect to Laviku, his domain, and his creatures.
- Always punch up - Bullying is for cowards and children. (Teasing someone and harmless pranks don't count as bullying to Tarlen, but he believes it's more tasteful to aim pranks and teasing for people on the same level as you.)
Breaking one of these rules in Tarlen's presence is enough to warrant a broken nose - or, at least, the loss of one svefra's respect.

Character HistoryTarlen was born into the “Whitecrest” pod. A very small pod, the Whitecrests were specialists famed for their skill in the art of woodcarving, and their ships were covered in beautifully carved and painted reliefs celebrating life on the great wide Suvan. Unfortunately, the Whitecrests' ability with shaping wood didn't do much to help them against a particularly sea-savvy shipful of slavers.
He was adopted by Leski Whitecrest, the black sheep of the pod. [WIP]
