Step 2 Poisonous Pomade
Savacea had arrived at Tokia's a little earlier then expected, surprising the old Myrian as she walked through the cottages door with a smile. She nodded her head in greeting to the woman who nodded back, as she made her way to the back to start on the Pomade she needed to learn to make before beginning the other steps of her signature poison.
She yawned slightly behind her hand, rubbing the sleep from her eyes as she opened the book to the Pomade recipe. She needed the oil of coconut, beeswax, and wraiths mint. Nodding her head in confirmation she left the room to go where supplies were kept for the personal use of Tokia to make remedies and such. She scanned the cluttered shelves of the room, finding the Wraiths Mint first, tucking it under her arm. Then she found the clumps of Beeswax and took one from the pile, then she found the jar of Oil of Coconut and tucked it under her arm. She scanned the shelf for a few minutes, surprised she was able to find anything in it's clutter glory, grinning and shaking her head she left and went back to the work space.
She placed the ingredients on the smooth, flat surface of the table. She grabbed a grating instrument, started to grate the Beeswax finely into a bowl, with slow strokes she grated up the clump of Beeswax into a fine shred. Satisfied with it, she left the bowl on the table since she did not need to Beeswax just yet. Picking up the Oil of Coconut and Wraiths Mint she brought it closer to the heating element, getting a small circular pot she put a cup of the oil into it, then she tore four Wraiths Mint leaves into the oil that way the aroma would be released into the oil quicker. Placing the pot on low heat, she sat down to wait for the leaves to infuse with the oil.
She did not want to leave the mixture in here alone, so she cracked open the Salves and Remedies book to give it a little read as she waited for the infusion of the oil and leaves. After twenty minutes, she put the book down and looked at the oil, it was holding a nice green color indicating that the infusion was complete. Keeping the heat element on she got a towel and grabbed the pot off of it. Sitting it down on another towel, she grabbed another bowl, placing a cheese cloth over the bowl she brought the pot to it. Pouring the contents over the cheese cloth she let the oil drain through it, once it was down she gave a squeeze to the leaves and cheese cloth to get it all out. Tossing it away, she placed the grated Beeswax into the pot, then the now infused oil, placing it over the heat element on medium heat.
She sat back down to read more of her book, noting some herbs of interest like Vyfox. It was an erect plant with long lance shaped leaves, that had hundreds of tinier leaves, as well as clusters of white flowers on top of the herb. It is known as a natural antiseptic and coagulant found in lowlands, marshlands, and forests. She read on to found out that it can be placed over cuts or applied as a poultice to major wounds, her mind thought of how her and Loda had cuts from the Black Marsh and if she knew about this herb then it would of been very useful. The book said that the leaves can be made into a tea to help the over all healing of injuries, that it must be harvested in whole combs and was a very common herb to find.
Savacea found the healing properties as interesting as the poisonous ones, after all a crafter of poisons was no good unless they could make antidotes and heal people from poison as well. So she read on about another herb of interest, Tolm. This herb is used to ease pain, help people sleep, and helps relax aching muscles. People most often use it in teas or tonics to aid the person. The herb itself can be found in any hills or lower mountains, and is commonly found. Tolm has a strong scent and grows on slim erect stems, with long hairy saw toothed leaves topped in summer by light red flower combs and bunches. The easing of pain could of came in use as well, though it was not found in the marshland, she wondered if she could find some on Black Rock since it is one big mountain.
She left the thoughts, as she stood up to check the Beeswax and Oil Infusion, noting that the Beeswax had now completely melted and blended with the oil, taking a wooden spoon she stirred it a bit to blend it more. Once satisfied she removed it from the heat, turning the heat off, placing the pot on a towel. She found a small glass jar and poured the contents into the small jar, capping it off with a lid and sitting it to the side. The Pomade will not be ready to use until the next day. She was off though tomorrow, so she would have to check on it later. She gave a soft smile, proud of herself for making it, although she would not know if she made it right until a few days later. Sitting the glass jar on a shelf, she cleaned up her mess, replacing the ingredients from whence they came, and going to Tokia to see what was today's job assignment.

You look pleased with yourself. The old lady huffed making Savacea smile even brighter, What has gotten into you lately, smiling all the time now, go back to that frown it is creeping me out. Tokia made a shiver motion and laughed, letting her know that she was just kidding. Savacea had a reason to smile but she was not going to let the woman know that reason, and it was partly the Pomade but it was partly..someone else as well. She waved her hand at the woman, waving off the comment, "Stop it now, don't ruin my good mood. What would you have me do today Tokia?" Savacea asked pleasantly, ready to learn some more and help the woman out as much as she possibly could. She had been kind to Savacea, letting her use the shop to create things. Even though Savacea rarely ever kept the things she created, she usually gave them to Tokia to sell. It was a fair deal, she was able to learn and use things, and what ever she made was sold to help offset the costs of her learning.
Today I would like you to make some medicinal things for me. First I need a healing tonic to ease pain, the next I need a poultice for a wound, then I will need a tea for sleep. All the ingredients should be back there. The woman pointed a wrinkled finger to the shelves in a clutter mess that held ingredients. As well as up there. she pointed up to where the herbs were hanging drying in the shop. So when you have figured out what herbs you need, grab them and get to work. Of course I will be here because nothing will be leaving the shop that is not of good quality. The Myrian nodded her head, and Savacea smiled as she was reading the remedies book while making Pomade and she knew just the two herbs she needed to assist Tokia with.
She looked up until she found the dried herb of Vyfox, then she scanned once more and found Tolm. She grabbed a small bunch of each as she headed to the work space to begin the list of things Tokia needed today, her mind briefly drifting to a smile of someone who she needed to dismiss. Though his smile did make her day better, even if it was only mental and not physically here. She gave a short laugh to herself for being so foolish and thinking of such, and laid the dried bunches down on the table's surface.

Savacea decided she would make the tonic first, since it was the easiest of the three to make. She remembered Tokia saying she just needed the herb, boiling water, and a jar to make a simple and easy tonic. She sighed hoping she would not mess up, but push through. Taking the herb Tolm, she placed it in the mortar and grasping the pestle she twisted soft and slow until the herb was not as bulky, but not a fine either, just more choppy looking. Then she grabbed a quart class jar, placing two ounces of the herbs inside she filled a pot with water, sitting it on a heat element until it came to a boil. Once it did boil, she poured the boiled water into the jar, filling it all the way up then placing the lid on it. After four hours she would remove the lid, strain the now infused water of the herbs, and it will be a fancy tea that they liked to call a Tonic.
Now that the tonic was out of the way, she thought back to what else she needed to do. She remembered there was a tea she was supposed to make as well. She had never made a tea before so she left to get Tokia to help her a little with the making of the tea. "I am not sure how to make this tea, could you assist me please?" Savacea asked with a slight bewildered look on her soft face. Tokia chuckled and nodded, saying of course she would be glad to help. This made Savacea feel better, at least she could learn how to make a Herbal Tea now, and not attempt it on her own and resulting in an utter screw up.
Okay you have the Tolm, that is good but I am going to get some Chamomile as well to add in with it, it will be relaxing and soothing assisting with the sleep. Also some honey to sweeten the tea, that way it doesn't taste like dung. Savacea nodded and chuckled, pleased that this knowledgeable woman was going to help her. Once Tokia came back she placed a jar of honey on the table and a small bunch of dried Chamomile as well. She gestured for the pot and Savacea grabbed it and brought it over to the woman.
Why are you standing there, you are going to be doing all the work I am just going to instruct and watch. Tokia chuckled, waving her hands for Savacea to get to work. She nodded and gave a smile, as she stood at the table now waiting for her instructions.
Boil water just like with a tonic, pour it over the Chamomile and Tolm in a large bowl, cover and let it steep for four hours. After that it will be infused into the water, you will strain it. Then you will place it in three medium sized glass jars, add some honey to sweeten the taste. It is just like a tonic, except it does not taste like dung. The woman moved her lips as if she knew what dung tasted like, giving a grimace and a shake. She nodded her head for Savacea to begin.
The Symenestra took the pot, placed water in it, then put on the heat to boil. While the water was boiling she took the Chamomile and Tolm, placing it in the mortar and grabbing the pestle to give it a few twists over the dried herbs to make them less bulky. She then placed them in a large bowl. Taking the now boiling water she poured it over the herbs, placing a cheesecloth over the top to cover it up. "Like that?" Savacea asked a little unsure of herself. The woman nodded, Now we just wait! Tokia said and left her.
Savacea sighed because she has never made a poultice either, but grabbed a book to look for how to do it, if she messed up she would just try again.

Savacea gazed the contents of the book, until she found how to make a basic Poultice. With a sigh of relief and a little frustration she decided to read on to learn more about it. Learning medicine wasn't so bad, she found it to be like making poison, just having the opposite effect as poisons did.
Poultice
Once can used fresh or dried herbs to make a Poultice to apply to the skin. By applying to the skin the healing remedies of the poultice are quicker, as the skin absorbs it fast.
First one needs a pestle and mortar to grind the herbs that are dry in a fine like powder. Then place these herbs in a bowl, adding hot water to make a paste. If one is using fresh herbs you would simply macerate them into a gooey mass.
Th next thing you need to do after adding the hot water to the grounded herbs, is to take a piece of cloth and put the now paste like substance on the cloth. After that one would place this poultice on the skin, covering with a hot cloth to contain the poultice, and leave it on for as long as possible.
If you are using macerated herbs, one would take the macerated herbs, add some water to the gooey mass and place on the wound. It is best to secure the mass to the wound with some cloth if possible and leaving it on as long as possible.
Savacea laughed as she realized she had already done this for Loda in Black Marsh, it was not as hard as she realized and felt foolish at thinking it was. It now became clear why Tokia left as this was a very basic and easy thing to do. Savacea smiled, taking what was left of the Tolm and adding some Vyfox into the mortar she twisted the pestle to grind it into a fine powder. Then she placed it in a small bowl, adding what was left from the water she boiled earlier. It was not as hot as it was for the tea, but still warm. Once she added a little water she took a wooden spoon to blend the mixture until it turned into a nice paste like substance.
Scooping the paste into a small jar, she topped it with a lid securing it and sitting it to the side. The poultice was now complete, but the tea and tonic still needed to steep for a little while. With that knowledge in mind, she decided to read some more about healing herbs, bringing the book closer she scanned it reading about some herbs she did not realize were used in healing as well as other things in the world, she found it interesting as she sat there, expanding her knowledge on plants and their uses.
Acalai
The Acalai is a rare tree that can only be found in warm climates. It is a small tree with thin bark, the leaves are rounded and compound. There is clusters of small yellow and white flowers adorning the tree. The bark can be used as an incense while the yellow flowers is commonly used to make a subtle dye. When one cuts the bark from the tree, a thick sap will easily flow from the tree. The sap can only be harvested in midsummer and must be stored in airtight jars to prevent it from drying.
Amur
Amur is a rare plant that can only be found in the hills. It is a low growing plant that has triangular fan like leaves, with pale blue violet to white flowers adorning the plant. The stalks and flowers are typically dried, powdered and used as a rare and potent incense.
Batonal
This is a common herb that can be found in different places through out Mizahar. The Batonal has rounded leaves and an aromatic scent that one can easily recgonize. The Batonal herb is commonly used in cooking as spice, but works as a hot infusion as well in medicine for internal discomfort.
Brinetooth
Brinetooth is an uncommon bush that will grow in any forest. It is a tough woody bushy that typically grows in tight thickets and hedges. The Brinetooth has ovular leaves with tiny white flowers that will become blue berries in the summer. The berries can be mashed, decocted and preserved as a paste to restore strength and vitality. The wood of the bush can be used in woodcarving as well as shaping.
Bunwol
Bunwol is an uncommon plant that grows in any Marshlands or Fresh Water Coastlands and Riverbanks. It is a thick rooted and fast growing plant that will climb and stretch over almost anything in it's path. Bunwol has brittle stems that shoot up from the base, with hairy leaves and greenish flowers that become orange berries in early summer. All parts of Bunwol are poisonous, it will cause light nausea and weakness if ingested. Although when macerated the resulting oil will act as an anitdote to most types of plant-based poisons.
Clodgol
Clodgol is a rare plant that can be found in Temperate to warm hills and mountains. The plant grows low to the ground and has a tough stalk of gold and green, with tough protective leaves that form a tight sheath on the stalk and ending in a six-petal star shaped flower of white and gold. The leaves and stalks can be boiled down to a pulpy mass and crushed, this will release a strong yellow to gold colored dye. Flowers and seed can be crushed and dried as a potent spice for cooking. Clodgol seeds must be extracted from the flower heads, which are dried flat. Dyes produced from Clodgol must be extracted from the stalks within a month of harvesting or the color will become faded.
Doglo
Doglo is an uncommon berry laden vine that can be found in any temperate. The vine that climbs and clings has triangular waxy leaves, with thick succulent stalks. There is tiny white flowers that will turn into tiny bright blue berries. The berries can be harvested and turned into james, or fermented into wines. The leaves can be dried and boiled in autumn to make a rich blue dye.
Everlight
Everlight is a common plant found in hills and plains. It is a small plant never growing more than a foot, that creeps along the ground. It has jagged and deep green leaves with purple veined lilac and white flowers. Everlight is used to help clear clouded eyes and helping wash out injured eyes. Tea can be made from the Everlight, by infusing the flowers that act as a stimulant to help focus the mind and aid in meditation. Everlight flowers must be macerated to keep more than a few weeks.
She placed the book softly down blinking as she realized that plants had many uses, not just for remedies or poisons but people used with for wine, dyes, and jams. The thought of jam made her stomach rumble, she loved jam it was so soft and had a lovely taste. She rubbed her eyes and raised the cloths on the tea and it appeared to be done now. She checked the tonic which also appeared to be steeped enough.
Savacea removed the lid of the tonic, putting a cheesecloth over another jar and holding it in place with one hand, she poured the tonic over the cheese cloth. It drained slowly into the other jar, straining the herbs from the tonic. Once it was done straining and draining, she threw the herbs and cheesecloth away, tightly placing the lid on the jar.
Turning to the tea, she placed a large bowl down with a cheese cloth over the top, she placed a tie around it to secure it to the bowl. She poured the tea over the cloth, so it could strain and drain into the large bowl. The cloth slipped making some herbs fall into the tea. Savacea grimaced and had to once again begin straining the tea. This time she secured the cloth tighter so it would not slip. Once it was strained completely, she carefully poured the contents in a couple of large jars. She looked at the honey, and took a wooden spoon and spooned a couple of spoonfuls into the jars, stirring them softly. Then she placed the lids on the jars tightly.
Picking up the tonic, tea, and poultice she had made she took them to Tokia sitting them on the counter. Wonderful, I will check these later. You can leave now you are done for the day, thank you for your help. Tokia said a bit distracted as she was busy making something herself. Savacea nodded and left the cottage, a bit tired but happy she could help the woman and learn knew things in the process. Her mind drifted off as she thought about the adventure in Black Marsh and how some presence had caused such darkness and raged inside of them, wondering what it could be she could not help but think that perhaps there may be a story somewhere about that. Perhaps it was just a ghost that was pissed off though, Savacea shrugged as she went to the dormitories to go to bed early so she could get up early in the morning.
