Human literacy in Mizahar

Postby Karin on August 7th, 2015, 12:05 pm

Hi!
So, I was wondering, what is the average literacy of a common human in Mizahar? I understand books are somewhat of a luxury item, so is reading something which isn't accessible to common people? And what about writing? I'm assuming that paper and writing equipment is also quite expensive.
Also, do any cities have schooling systems for young children? I understand that there's a university somewhere around, but I'm not so sure about things like primary schools/elementary schools?
I'm also not so sure if reading and writing, at least the basics are perhaps a given. I also understand that it may be the case that literacy is up to the author, in which case I'll shut up xD
Thank you!

It is my understanding that it is assumed that most people can read and write unless otherwise stated.

Seems like I read about this somewhere, I do believe a similar question was asked at one time when I was reading through the Q&A forum.. And I do believe Gossamer said that it was a given and not a skill you learn and build up, to think of it as a free skill or common sense.

As for it being expensive, not really. You can buy a blank book to write in for 3gm, ink is 1gm unless you want colored which is 3gm and a quill to write with is 5cm. My character is in Black Rock, they make paper there so it is abundant. Also they have a plant that they use the seeds from to make the ink, so knowing herbalism and such helps with making your own ink.

I do believe I saw a school system for kids in one of the cities! Although I can not be sure or tell you which it was as that was a bit ago and my memory is .. well crappy to say the least. But there is libraries in a lot of cities as well, that people can take advantage of, so books are somewhat common in those areas and people are able to read.

Hope this helps I am not the best. :)

Human literacy in Mizahar

As a general rule, PCs are literate in any language they are fluent, basic or poor in. Naturally a character who has poor language level might not be able to write very well and those who have basic can write alright.

When you go to learn new languages, part of learning the new langauge in Mizahar is writing it out if it has a written language attached to it.

In general, if you can speak it, you can write it. :)
