There is a buoyancy to Azrayel; a deftness and persistence of movement that is seldom seen in men his size. Standing at an impressive six-foot three, he is broad-shouldered and carries strength and tone in his body that is the result of a lifetime spent running, jumping, climbing, and in all respects finding the flashiest ways to traverse the Zeltivan cityscape possible. This can be easily identified by the sureness with which he carries himself; although a master acrobat he is not, his experiences have honed his synchronization with his body, and he moves with near constant fluidity and precision. This all being said, Azrayel is not a massive man - although tall and well built, he is far from a giant, gifted with lean muscles and an agile frame. His face is bright with the vitality of a man who has not yet begun to truly experience life. His pale blue eyes, the color of fog clinging over the harbor in the early hours of the morning, seem constantly alive with curiosity and vigor. His footloose and somewhat irreverent personality is characterized on his face; from the uneven lines of of the patchy black hair that covers his sharp jawline, to the tufts of his hair that fall in haphazard locks across his head and face like the tumultuous waves of a stormy ocean. As far as apparel is concerned, Azrayel is concerned with function first, and visual appeal second. His boots, black leather and colored with dirt and wear, attest to this fact. He is fond of tunics and breeches, as these he has found do not overly hinder his movement, and usually wears them in shades of grey or pale blue. The only accessorizing present on the man is a sash, mainly meant for holding things, where his cutlass can be found sheathed when he is not in the midst of a swordfight. Personality ”I used to be afraid of the dark. But most things start off in the shadow until you cast light on ‘em.” Azrayel is in essence, a curious person taken to the extreme. He wants to learn all there is to learn and to know all there is to know, and more importantly, experience all there is to experience. He looks at the world with reverence, in awe of the unknown, and is constant motion from one new challenge to the next. Although often nosey in his ultimate quest for understanding, and often reckless in his need for adventure, Azrayel is not stupid. He tries his best, especially as he as grown older, to avoid needlessly endangering himself or others. Despite this, his body bears the scars of his sometimes rash behavior, but he bears each with pride, and is very fond of telling their stories - particularly over a few mugs of ale. In his relations with other people, Azrayel often finds himself at an impasse. He finds a lot of people too mundane for his liking. If you are the type of person that is content with living a simplistic or comfortable life, Azrayel might not be openly contemptuous towards you, but certainly wont have any interest in you beyond a passing one. However, Azrayel truly is a social animal. He can easily spend hours simply discussing and conversing with people - sharing stories and ideas, and in particularly, loves hearing stories of faraway places or people. All in all, however, Azrayel is more cautious towards people than he is of anything else. He is slow to trust someone fully, and doesn’t feel comfortable with people until he feels he’s learned them down to their essence. Although generally laid back and easy to get along with, Azrayel can be quite temperamental, and will often react heatedly to even the most minor provocation or perceived slight. Really, though, the only flaw in other people that Azrayel cannot forgive is disloyalty - to himself, or to others in his life. Azrayel does not feel bound by anything. He is sure of himself, and often bullheadedly stubborn. Particularly he despises relying on other people for support, and in instances when it becomes necessary, is dogged in his efforts to repay debts he has incurred. Azrayel prefers to stand on his own two feet whenever possible, in direct contrast to his typically friendly and social demeanour. Strangely, though, he often very keen on lending his aid to others, especially when they have fantastical or bizarre problems on their plates. History ”Today is spent, but tomorrows a vein of untapped wealth.” As the son of a seafood merchant, much of Azrayel's background is fairly typical of a native Zeltivan. He grew up on East Street, the most impovershed of the cities districts, and the only real privilege awarded to Azrayel was a minor reprieve from the occasional belt-tightening food shortages that some seasons would otherwise plague the city. His mother was a painter possessed of moderate skill but bottomless motivation, and although she managed to bring in a small amount of money for the house by selling her work to a few of the merchants and upper class around the city, her masterpieces mostly all ended up hanging around walls and sitting on tables about their family home. Azrayel's father, Darien Kolaski, had always wanted to attend the university, so he could acquire the kind of hard skills or training to rise above the poverty he had grown up in. He never could afford it himself, however, and it became very important to Darien that his only child could go, to earn a shot at a becoming something greater than he had been. Liara, the well educated daughter of a former University Professor, did her best as Azrayel grew up to give him a well rounded, if basic education, and his father always talked with him at length about going to the University, learning a real trade, and moving up in the world. This created a constant pressure on Azrayel - and not an unintentional one, either, and as Azrayel grew older and began to act out and misbehave more and more frequently, Darien tightened the leash more and more, spurring Azrayel to become more and more rebellious as time passed. The only one who really understood was Alastair. His best friend and the closest thing he ever had to a brother, from the time they met when they both were very little, they were almost inseparable; As children, they treated the city like their playground, dedicating themselves to exploring every roof, every alleyway, and causing general mayhem along the way. As they grew older, this mayhem turned into chasing women and getting into brawls in taverns and alleyways. There were sometimes others, and individuals in their little group came and went, but what always remained constant was Alastair and him. For Azrayel, Alastair’s influence was a tempering one. The Wizard in training, even when young, urged Azrayel towards the path of caution and care, and it was through him that Azrayel became a practitioner of The Flux. Azrayel took any work he could find as he grew older, doing oddjobs for friends of his family and neighbors to scrape enough coin together to wriggle out from beneath his father's influence. The night he left his family home, he didn’t wish either of his parents a goodbye, and has been loathe to return since. He has spent the last year of his life in a state of limbo, with the friends he cared most for having left Zeltiva long ago to pursue their own dreams, and although he misses the experiences and faces of his childhood dearly, he is excited to begin a new chapter of his life. |
