Race: Inarta Caste: Endal Gender: Male Age: 20 Birthday: 19th of Winter, 494 AV Birthplace: The Glaciers outside of Windreach Theme song (why not?):Angel of the Night
Appearance: Shadyn is a large Inarta male standing 6 feet tall and weighing in at 200 pounds. He has broad shoulders, deep chest, and lean arms and legs. He is muscular, but possesses mostly lean, toned muscle rather than bulging bulk. His features dance between the lines of ruggedness and refinement, with eyes the color of a "midnight forest fog" green. His hair, though black, is heavily highlighted throughout with hues of deep crimson. Though he does change his style some, he prefers to keep it relatively short. It runs down the nape of his neck to his shoulders, and is slightly shaggy. He has no piercings, which is quite unusual for an Inarta. He does have a grey secondary feather from his Wind Eagle Xarrt (pronounced like "Heart" with a breathy "H" and a trilled "r").
Wounds
Currently, Shadyn possesses a set of three wide gouges across his chest from the Dire Bear in The Journey, Part 2 on the 11th of Fall, 515 AV. --- As of the Winter 515 AV, these have become scar tissue. They are not the dark color of old scars, however...they are a light, faded rust color at this point.
He also has many smaller, deeper scratches covering the top, front, and back of his right shoulder and upper arm from his battle with the Zith in The Journey, Ehktar Pass on the 18th of Fall, 515 AV. --- As of the Winter 515 AV, these have become scar tissue. They are not the dark color of old scars, however...they are a light, faded rust color at this point.
Character Concept and History
Shadyn was born to a vivacious young Endal under the light of a full moon on the Glaciers outside of Mt. Skyinarta. Though she was pregnant, her fiercely independant and adventurous spirit refused to let her remain within the city. When she went into labor, she was unable to make it all the way back to Wind Reach, and thus had her mount land at the foot of one of the glaciers on the mountain's slopes. Though she survived the birth, the harsh conditions and lack of proper medical procedures resulted in her death only days after making it to Wind Reach with her newborn son. With his rider dead, and an unprotected infant left in her place, her bonded Wind Eagle, Xarrt, took care of the boy as best he could. Though still in his youth, Xarrt was by no means a new flyer, and had long since earned a great deal of respect for his abilities, along with those of Shadyn's mother, Kriina. Thus, he was able to situate the boy under the care of a master lapidary by the name of Arrmal.
Shadyn was therefore well cared for during his youth, and enjoyed a close relationship with a Wind Eagle from his earliest memory, something extraordinarily rare. Because of this, he always knew that he would become an Endal, as did his mentors. Still, his peers, largely out of jealousy, never let him forget that he was not born in Wind Reach, and insinuated thus that he did not belong among them. This instilled in him a deep desire to move beyond the confines of the usual flight patterns and hunting areas into the lands and societies beyond. Nevertheless, pride over his heritage was as strong in him as in any virile Inarta male. His surrogate "father" and mentor, Arrmal, cared for him well, and also kept him busy mining the walls of the main crater. Though dangerous work, endless hours of labor left him more skilled in Climbing than most of the other young men.
Time passed, and upon his graduation he began the process of proving himself just like the rest of the potential Endals. While many of them possessed Talon swords or one of many different bows, Shadyn was left with just one weapon -- an ornately carved obsidian bladed tomahawk. Arrmal had made for him upon his reaching the age of fifteen. Again, it was his ability to focus almost obsessively on a given task that led him to become rather competent with these, and soon he was fighting on par with his much better equipped rivals.
After three years of diligent work, Xarrt decided that Shadyn had proved that he bore the remarkable potential of his late mother, and accepted him as his rider. While his elders honor him for the privilege of riding Xarrt, this only worsened his already tenuous relationship with other young Endals.
It has been two years since he earned his mount, and as lookout he has worked hard, though he has given much of his earnings to the aging Arrmal out of gratitude. He has managed to develop friendly terms with only one other Endal -- another young man by the name of Mircor. Time has only served to increase his insatiable desire to explore the unknown lands beyond. Otherwise, he remains hardworking, jovial -- though quite suspicious deep down --, intelligent, and well spoken.
Shadyn is obsessed with perfection. While he knows that a person's body can only do so much, he believes that mental and spiritual perfection should be the ultimate goal for any mortal. He diligently scours any imperfections -- perceived or literal -- from his character and history as quickly as he can. This makes him extremely slow to forget any time he fails, and he is quite hard on himself. He will go to any length to fix a fault, be it days, months, or years later, often to much cost on his part.
Also, he is astoundingly courageous and brave...to a fault. He likes to say that "A victory is first won by courage, then by wisdom, and lastly by martial prowess." While that is true, and he possesses a great deal of the first two factors, this leads he to often overlook his lack of combat experience to any notable degree. He is willing to take on anything and anyone...even when warriors far more experienced would decline. While on rare occasions he might just land a victory, this is an extremely dangerous mentality to maintain in Mizahar...
Xarrt the Wind Eagle
Large Picture of Xarrt on Mt. Skyinarta :
Xarrt is Shadyn's mount and bonded Wind Eagle. At nearly thirty years old, he is a seasoned veteran of the sky, having served with two Endals, one of which was Kriina, Shadyn's mother. He is one of the more combatant Wind Eagles in Wind Reach, making him take a somewhat dominant attitude towards other Wind Eagles and all living beings in general...an attribute that can cause his rider just as much good as it can harm.
For reasons unknown, he has never chosen a mate, perhaps because he has never had a rider who has chosen a partner for themselves. Thus, his relationship with Shadyn is much like that he would normally have with a fledgling of his own. Shadyn's foolhardiness and inexperience would get him into much more trouble than they do if Xarrt did not counter it with his time-honed wisdom.
On an emotional level, he is generally friendly but reserved, preferring to speak only to the few other Eagles and Endals that are close to him and Shadyn. Though he is no longer a youth, he does nuture a powerful warrior spirit within him, and a deep love of combat. He is also tenderhearted, and will do what he can to help anyone in need, so long as it does not endanger or otherwise oppose what is in Shadyn's best interests, since those are his primary concern. He will often stay just at the edge of earshot of conversations he deems important, using his keen memory as a bank for anything Shadyn might need to know or remember. In fact, except when within Wind Reach, Xarrt will almost never let Shadyn out of his sight. In truth, they are each other's only family.
Lanira (NPC)
Lanira's Character :
NPC Type: Travelling Companion NPC Name: Lanira Race: Inarta (Dek) Age and Gender: 19/Female Birthday: 8th of Summer, 496 AV
Appearance
Lanira is something of a paradox. Though she is possessed of a natural beauty that is quite striking, she seems totally unaware of it. She stands around 5' 6"...a bit taller than most Inarta women, but only by a few inches. Her build is quite slender...some might even describe her as looking "fragile" like one of the Inarta's famous glasswork statues. Though her appearance is quite elegant...the Inarta have little patience for one that cannot "pull their own weight", which likely explains why she was relegated to the Dek caste. Though her hard work as a Dek did do some to add muscle and sinew to her form, leaving her quite fit, one look at her build will tell anyone that such labor would have made short work of her in the end. Her skin is quite fair, despite having worked a great deal outside...tanning is not something that happens much to Lanira no matter how much time she spends in the sun.
Her features are angular, but with a softened edge to them. She has a narrow face and high cheekbones. Her eyes are a dark, smoky shade of aquamarine, rather almond shaped. Her hair grows in a silky auburn profusion hanging down to her waist, mostly straight, but with a slight natural wave to it. Aside from washing it and running her fingers through it now and then, she almost never actually does anything to style it. Shadyn has woven a few of Xarrt's chest and secondary feathers into her hair to mark her as belonging to him, but there are no decorations otherwise.
Her clothing is nicer than that belonging to many Inarta, being provided by Shadyn, and of typical Inarta style. To this she does not pay particularly much attention either. She wears clothes because she needs them, and she likes the way the clothes look. The idea that she could fashionably arrange them or alter them is the last thing on her mind.
Her lithe form lends her a level of natural grace, but being a Dek has landed her with a very straightforward and steady bearing overall.

Background
Lanira is a Dek who spent most of her time either aiding fishing vessels in Thunder Bay or working in the Hydroponic Gardens. She ame to serve Shadyn through an unusual turn of circumstances.
Two days before Thunder Bay is closed, the vessel on which she performed drudge work decided to set out to try to make one last good catch for the season. They sailed far out into the Bay to reach the deepwater fishing grounds known to harbor good fishing at this time of year, and began to cast their nets. They brought in a bounty, but during the night before they were to return to port, a gale blew in and pummeled the ship. For a whole day they were buffeted in front of the gale, barely staying above water. Finally, the gale reached the shore south of Wind Reach, and their boat was smashed upon the rocky shore.
Lanira managed to survive the wreck by clinging to the spare salt-casks aboard the vessel. Salt was packed into the small hold with the fish to keep they fresh, and it was important that it remain perfectly sealed until used. Thus, the casks remained water tight, and because they were only partially filled (the owner of the boat was something of a skin-flint, and re-used old ale kegs for his salt-casks...the kegs served well enough, but were vastly oversized) they floated well.
Whatever the turn of events, she made it ashore in once piece. Not being a Navigator, she saw mountains in the distance and assumed that she was on the north shore facing Mt. Skyinarta. Thus, she began to trek inland. After only a few hours, however, her vastly inadequate clothing -- which, additionally, was sopping wet and quickly freezing -- let to her succumbing to the early stages of hypothermia.
Fortunately, Shadyn was hunting in the area, on his way back to Wind Reach from Alvadas. He had already killed a mountain goat, but after hearing a distant bugle, decided to try to hunt down the elk. While failing in his search for the elk, he did come across human tracks...Lanira's. After finding her, he rushed her back to Wind Reach, using the ample folds of his own katinu, his body heat, and Xarrt's body heat to keep her alive. When he arrived, he personally oversaw her medical treatment in his own Aeries penthouse.
Now:
When he returned to Wind Reach, Shadyn learned that the only "family" he had (his surrogate father) died, leaving him rather bereft. Caring for someone in need formed a natural bond in these circumstances. On her part, having someone -- especially an Endal -- be kind and tender to her, treating her as just another Inarta, would be a heartwarming shock. Such a person was logically an Endal whom she willingly wanted to serve.
Shadyn, on his part, does not treat her as a Dek, really, but as a Chiet. The clothing that he has provided her is such as befits a Chiet...and a well appointed one at that. Though she still provides some of the necessary service (housekeeping, generally, though some fishing as well), she has become more of a companion to him, and he treats her as such. He also remains quite respectful of her, having not made any advances upon her.
She travels with him most of the time...mainly because he does not feel safe leaving her alone at this point in time. The Unforgiving is a dangerous place, even in The Forward Camps. Additionally, being a Dek (though he treats her as a Chiet, there has been no official change of caste yet), if another Endal were to arrive, they could easily take advantage of the situation. Thus, he keeps her with him, although he often requests that she remain at their inn.
Her personality is warm though somewhat shy. She is much more introverted around men then she is around women...typically, around other women, especially if they are not Inarta, she will open up more. She is quite intelligent, though aside from her time as a Yasi she has not had any opportunity to develop that intelligence with knowledge. Thus, she usually expresses a child-like curiosity at nearly everything. Since Shadyn's knowledge of Common is far better than hers (even at Basic for him), Lanira tends to look to him as translator, and therefore will stick close to him unless she feels that she is quite secure with someone else, and even then she will make sure that he knows what is going on if at all possible. She is also on very good terms with Xarrt, who will also provide her with help whenever she needs it, often having been instructed by Shadyn to keep watch over her. Still...Shadyn is the one to whom Xarrt is bonded, and that relationship will always take precedence over his relationship with Lanira, however friendly and close they may become.

Special/Magical Possessions
Heirloom
Shadyn's heirloom is a tomahawk given to him (and crafted) by Arrmal. It is a simple weapon, consisting of merely an obsidian blade, oak handle, long leather lanyard, and a ruby knob on the end of the lanyards. He also has a leather belt with a hardened leather holster for it. The blade is carved in relief with hunting wolf and a hunting Wind Eagle motif. Its mounting is decorated with finely tooled silver.
Though a well crafted obsidian blade is indeed one of the sharpest instruments known, and with a direct hit can bury itself in anything save thick metals (or magically protected materials), it does have a weakness. Its other name -- volcanic glass -- indicates how fragile it is. If it suffers even a glancing blow, it will shatter, at least partially. These blades can be replaced, though that is not cheap (and accounts for much of the money Shadyn has spent from his income).
It is quite lightweight, and like all tomahawks, is prioritized for throwing and ambush attacks. By holding the bone knobs and spinning the tomahawk at the end of its lanyard, Shadyn can achieve a maximum (accurate) range of about 150 feet (70 foot maximum if thrown by the handle). Thus, it is quite useful. The problem is that due to the fragility of obsidian, and the fact that the handle is only wood, it is terrible at defensive maneuvers.
Pond Water
Shadyn possesses a small-medium water skin of water from the Pond of Moonlight Escape (both this and the following item were acquired in this thread The Hidden Self Modded with Mir's permission). He keeps it sealed at all times, and has added an extra external hardened leather sheath which holds the water skin on his hip and entirely encloses it, just to make sure that no light reaches the water by accident, and that it does not leak/get punctured.
The effects are as follows: -When consumed, the water turns whoever or whatever drinks it immaterial (this does not include possessions, only the biological composition of the creature consuming the water) -There is only one way to return to normal: drinking the water again -The water can only be seen and consumed during a full moon -In the direct light of a full moon, a person made intangible by the water is able to interact with the physical world, though their capabilities are heavily reduced (heavy things are too solid to lift, light things may slip out of one's hands, etc.) -If one does not return to tangible form before the end of the full moon, they must wait until the next full moon to have the chance to interact with the physical world again -While intangible, it is possible to die via exhaustion or dehydration or any other permanent effects (i.e. disease, preexisting wounds, infection, etc.)
OOC NOTE: These are the only properties of the water. While Shadyn and other chars may suppose otherwise IC, no others exists.
Moonlight Escape Pebbles -- aka "Lunatite"
Moonlight Escape is quite rocky, and some of these rocks are mutated. In this case, Shadyn found some pebbles that he dubbed "Lunatite." He is in possession of an entire bag of these, although he plans to sell some to Arrmal the Lapidary. Their only known quality is that they glow, their brightness increasing as night falls, peaking at the intensity of a lantern flame.
OOC NOTE: These are the only properties of the stones. While Shadyn and other chars may suppose otherwise IC, no others exists.
Housing
Location: The Eagle Aeries
House: Shadyn loves both simplicity, and the "highbrow" life. Thus, his home reflects this, exhibiting a collection of fine glasswork as his number one investment and decoration. Also, he has purchased imported art whenever he can get his hands on this. Since it is only him and Xarrt, he has devoted one of his spare bedrooms to being a library. While it is nearly empty right now (except for textbooks from his training), he hopes to acquire a collection of some of the greatest texts in the world. Otherwise, it is a rather ordinary domain, though the fact that it is by default in the best category of houses in Wind Reach must be considered.
