45th Autumn, Wooden Wonders Workshop

Karin had woken up exactly as the fifth bell chimed indistinctly in the distance. She had woken up groggy and muddled, and so it had taken her a while to actually rouse herself from her bed. But when she did, approximately a bell later, the girl was as sprightly as a girl awake at this ungodly hour could be.

It wasn't even because of the light outside, Karin had constructed a makeshift curtain over the window to stop the random flashes of light whenever their home moved around in the 'night'. No, it wasn't because of Alvadas' unusual day/night duality. It was because, this most fateful of days, Karin had been promised a tutorial from Cadog in the workshop. She was jubilantly excited, almost excessively so.

Ever since starting her job last season, the girl had been growing more and more fond of her workplace as she learnt steadily how to shape and craft wood. Every scent, sensation and colour she experienced there was a treasure to her, and the knowledge she gained, well- that was golden. But she'd mostly been working out in the yard, doing hard manual labour. This she didn't mind too much, because she was right next to the waters edge, and of course the Svefran loved the water. But ever since she'd started there she'd been entranced by the little glimpses of the workshop. She'd wanted to stop and take the tools off the walls, to examine the artefacts lying around, to ask Cadog a thousand questions. And now, she would be able to!

A tall, willowy lady had come in a few days ago to commission a toy from the man for her daughter. Cadog hadn't told her too much yesterday, but what he had told her was this: that she would be helping him craft the toy, under his careful guidance. So, this morning, being aware of how slippery the city's streets were, she had apparently subconsciously decided to leave the house doubly early. Karin however, was completely fine with this.

Even though she had woken up earlier than she had meant to, she decided that leaving the house early would be quite a good idea. Before she headed out, she gave her face a quick splash of water, wiping the residual sleep from her eyes. With a rake of her fingers, she brushed back her hair into a messy bun, so that later she wouldn't have her hair falling in front of her vision. She put on her clothes, noticing that the sleeve on her left arm was getting slightly frayed. She thought to herself, I might have to go to the Bizzare sometime soon, pick up some new clothes.

The thought was quickly forgotten about as she leaped upon her workday. She tiptoed quietly around the house, picking up a hunk of bread for her breakfast and tearing off a chuck absentmindedly as she slowly pulled open the door, wincing as it squeaked and squealed. She sent a silent plea to her mother to fix the door, and set out, breathing in the fresh air of the early morning.

[Job Thread] Carving a Childhood Toy

Of course, despite the earliness of the hour, Karin was surrounded by sunshine normally seen at the twelfth bell. A flock of birds whooshed overhead, chirping confusedly with a myriad of pitches and tempos. I suppose they're confused about this illusion as much as I am. The girl had been trying to wrap her head around this illusion, but to no avail. Maybe Ionu made a pact with Syna and Leth, or maybe the deity did something else. Rather disparagingly, or perhaps cynically, she thought, Who knows!

She shrugged off her questions, knowing full well that she might never know why, and started to walk down towards the port, taking her time as she didn't need to be there until the ninth bell. The day was pleasant and as she walked, she noticed the quite large amount of people on the streets. Presumably, quite a few people were having trouble sleeping due to this constant sunlight.

The familiar winding streets continued down, and Karin wandered here and there, glancing at the houses and cottages knocking up against each other. As she so often did, she started to daydream. She was feeling pretty cheerful, and so the topic of her daydreams that morning were light, typically about sailing the 'Stallion', the boat which the workshop was ever so slowly fixing, trying to imagine how majestic it would be once it was finished.

In her daydream, Karin's hair was flying over her shoulders as she effortlessly piloted the boat, the sails white and crinkling in the breeze. The creak of the boat as it sliced through the water was a pleasing thing to think about, and it distracted the girl for a while, passing the Bizarre.

She amused herself for some time with this, but real life was drawing her in. She stopped to watch a stream appear from underneath one rickety house, cross the path, and disappear again underneath another house, equally as rickety, its walls painted a faded mauve. As she was feeling especially curious this morning, she decided that she'd have a little dip. There were hardly any people around, so the girl reached down and slipped off her boots, leaving them in a messy pile next to the stream.

It wasn't deep, but she rolled up the hems of her trousers anyway, and gingerly placed her foot into the water. The cool, refreshing water ran over her feet, and she wriggled her toes, feeling the grit and pebbles under the soles of her feet, rough but surprisingly pleasant. She stood there for a little bit, enjoying the cool on her feet and the warm on her head. But after a little while, she decided to explore a little further, her interest being piqued by the stream disappearing into the culvert under the mauve house. She didn't want to be guilty of snooping, and if the owners of the mauve house showed any sign of being around, then Karin would hastily vamoose, but she doubted it at this hour.

So, with her feet splashing, she walked towards the culvert underneath the house, wondering where the water actually went. As she got closer, she could hear the rushing of the currents as they presumably fell in a waterfall to somewhere. In the distance, the bell tolled seven, but Karin didn't really notice, only registering it distantly in the back of her mind. The draw of exploration was too strong. She reached the side of the house, the walls gently radiating heat caught from the sun. She leaned down, with her left hand flat against the surface for balance, and peeped her head into the gap under the house.

Her eyes were not used to the dim light, but she stayed there for a little while, letting her vision adjust. After a few chimes, she could see properly, and what she saw surprised her. There was a little cavern, with a high ceiling decorated with cobwebs. Underneath the cobwebs, Karin could see intricate designs, what looked like gargoyles or something. It's incredible! This little space, with a little pond in it! For there was a small pool of water, glinting ever so slightly in the sunlight. It didn't look dangerous to Karin, and of course, she was drawn to the water like the proverbial duck.

She knew, deep down, that it was probably a bad idea to climb under the house. For one, she had no way of knowing if it was as safe as it looked. For another... well, she wasn't entirely sure if she'd be able to get out again. But even knowing the dangers, the girl still wanted to get there. So, after a brief look around, to see if anyone was watching (they weren't), she rolled up her trouser legs and her sleeves, as far as they would go, and got on her hands and knees, wincing slightly as the gravel dug sharply into her kneecaps. She crawled forwards, and her shoulders and her head were now underneath the house, brushing against the roof of the cavern.

Her hair was now laced with cobwebs, and a feather was tickling her nose, but she could see that there was a small ledge which would allow her to get in and out relatively easily. She ducked her head out again, and this time, she edged in backwards. The going was slow, as she wasn't sure of her footing, but soon enough her left leg was dangling over the edge. Water was splashing over her, and despite her precaution in rolling her clothes up, she was getting soaked through to the bone. She reached about with her foot, until she found the ledge. It was slightly crumbly, but after a few kicks, it seemed like it was sturdy enough. Karin pushed herself off from the stream bed, and grasped onto the edges of the culvert, as her other foot joined the ledge.

She was now wholly in the cavern. The light was dim and gloomy, with only rippling, reflected light shining on the ceiling around the entrance. There was a feeling of stillness, and somehow calm. With a little jump, she splashed down into the water, watching the ripples spread out around her. The water was surprisingly warm, and... Yes, it's drinkable. The girl looked around, noting the gargoyles, the cobwebs, the tide line. In the corner of the room were a small cluster of sharp looking stalactites, which she would wade over to visit in a minute. Gleefully, she splashed her hands in the water, looking for all the world like an excitable child. She glanced up at the culvert entrance. Good. No-one will be able to see inside, unless they bend down to look. So... I can explore!

With a beaming smile, for she felt like she was in a bathhouse all to herself, she peeled herself out of her clothes, draping them over the ledge underneath the little trickle of water from the stream, as they were already soaking anyway. She stood there, in her undergarments, and appreciated where she was for just under two chimes, before with a giant splash, she flopped down under the water. It wasn't terribly deep. Her knees scraped against the patterned, mosaic floor, but she was still able to swim, just a little. She surfaced when she reached the stalactites, and she breached the surface, pretending to be a dolphin, splashing and playing in the water.

Curiously, she reached up to wrap her hand around the stalactite, and tentatively she tried to break it off. But, it wouldn't budge. She tried the next one, but that wouldn't break either. So, she reached to the one at the back, gingerly trying to avoid being spiked by the ones in front, and nudged it with her fingers... Only to find that it did move, but not in the way she suspected. Because apparently, this mysterious little cavern wasn't so little after all.

A door slid open in the wall. She would never have known it was there, it was completely hidden and disguised. She ogled in confusion and awe, her blue eyes wide. Beyond the door were some steps which descended into the water, covered slightly in creeping vines and water weed. The wide, flat steps led up to a small platform, with an extremely low ceiling, in fact the ceiling was at the same level as the other room, the one with the pool in it. The room was even darker than the pool room, but it was lit up by a strange light source. In fact, an incredibly strange light source.

For right ahead of Karin, perched so innocently on the platform, were two animals. One a luminescent, glowing, sunlight white dog, and the other a pitch black, so dark that she almost couldn't see it cat. The girl floated in the water, staring at the animals bemusedly. They didn't move, they were almost like statues, except she could see their eyes blinking. There was no way in and out of the room, as far as she could see, so she presumed, quite rightly, that they were illusions. What purpose they had, she couldn't begin to guess. For a while, she simply floated there, investigating the cramped space.

The steps, although covered in plant life, were decorated in mosaics like the walls in the other room. The colours here were richer, and darker, and depicted flowing patterns and what looked like a city. There was a picture of the sun and the moon created in mosaics on the ceiling, corresponding with the dog and cat beneath. Overall, it was quite beautiful. The girl pulled herself out of the water, making sure to keep one foot out of the room, just in case it was some kind of trap. She crawled up the steps, there was really no other way to get up them, as there certainly wasn't enough space to stand up.

She soon reached the animals, and tentatively reached forwards to touch the dog on his/her nose. Her hand passed through it's nose, and her hand felt deliciously warm. With surprise, she moved her hand around weirdly inside the dog, and the warm feeling passed up through her arm, and warming her heart to the core. She felt content, as if she'd fallen asleep in the summer sunshine. Wondering what would happen if she tried to touch the cat, she withdrew her hand from the dog, and moved it over to the cat. As soon as she pushed her hand onto its head, she felt a sense of coolness, not a feeling of cold, but that feeling in the evening, when the dew is settling and the moon is rising. Again, it was quite a pleasant feeling so the girl messed around, alternating putting her hand through each of the animals.

Time passed, and the girl was feeling quite sleepy. I wonder how long I've been here. This has been so fun and relaxing. Wait... Hang on... All of a sudden, Karin was feeling more awake. Because she'd just remembered something which had somehow completely skipped her mind. Oh petch! Work! The girl hurried backwards, unable to turn around properly, scraping her stomach against the tiles and bashing her feet against the floor of the pool behind her. As soon as she got into the pool room, she heard an unmistakeable sound... Bong... Bong... Bong... Bong... In total, there were eight tolls of the bell. The sonourous sound echoed extraordinarily loudly in the room, and Karin panicked slightly, as she only had an hour to get out of the room, put her clothes back on, and find her way down to the Port, which would undoubtedly take longer than an hour. And to think, she'd wanted to be early!

The girl rushed to put her absolutely soaking clothes on, cursing under her breath. As is often the case, it felt extremely uncomfortable to put on her wet clothes, and she shivered at how clingy and cold they felt against her skin. With a longing glance back at the animals, who simply stared back at her with glowing but kindly eyes, she grabbed the entrance of the culvert, and hauled herself up. With her right foot balanced precariously on the ledge, she pushed herself up and out, her clothes now muddy and covered in grit from the stream as she had to launch herself onto her stomach to get out of the tunnelled entrance.

She was now free of the pool. Out in the fresh air again, she blinked furiously as the light of Syna blinded her, shining directly into her eyes. She looked around eagerly, looking for her shoes... as her heart sunk into her stomach as she realised the inescapable truth of Alvadas- if you leave something in the streets, when you come back to it, it might not actually be there anymore. Petching shhhhyke. So, she was barefoot and without shoes, completely soaked through, shivering, and going to be late for work. Well, some things always come with a price.

Despite her annoyance at being late and cold, the girl was feeling optimistic. Her shoeless feet padded against the terrain as she made her way down to the port. She looked a sorry state; her hair dishevelled, her clothes damp and still covered in bits of gravel, sand and mud particles, no matter how much she tried to brush herself down. Her feet were cold and going slightly grey because of it. But she was... surprisingly happy. Content.

The bell tolled nine faintly as she reached the entrance of the port. Despite any misgivings, the girl wasn't going to be as late as she had originally thought. The pace and speed of her walk had warmed her up a lot, and her clothes were mostly dry. Still, she looked like an urchin. Trying in vain to neaten herself up, she finally arrived at the waterfront, hurrying along to the workshop. In the distance, she could see Fern setting up in the yard.

With a wave, she yelled indistinctly to Ferny, "Hey!" He looked up and frowned. It wasn't until he got closer that he realised who she was, and he let out a mighty guffaw, "What've ye done Karin? Gone and got yourself kicked out from home or something?" The girl grimaced at him, frowning and shrugging. "Where's your father?" The man gestured at the workshop, and bent down over his work again.

Karin took this as a sign to go inside. Her excitement, which she'd forgotten about because of the little excursion she'd been on, suddenly manifested itself again. Aai aai aai! Although she was normally calm, or at least not visibly showing her emotions, this workshop was getting the better of her as a little grin crept onto her face. She reached the workshop door, and gave a quick rap of her knuckles to the surface.

"Come in!" Cadog's kindly voice called from inside, and Karin entered. "Good gods above Karin! What happened to you?" The girl went to explain, albeit hesitantly, but the man interrupted, "It's no matter, as long as you're okay. You ready to start today?" He sent her a friendly smile, and Karin felt at ease, all of a sudden, in this warm and comforting workshop. In fact, the feeling was not unlike the feeling she'd experienced with the animals before, in the culvert.

"I'm ready Cadog." With that, the man gestured at the workspace surrounding them. He pointed out the equipment they'd need, the supplies, the bench which they could sit on... and Karin felt her excitement settle into a much more stable form, that of hard-working, genuine enjoyment of her job. And with that, Cadog said, "Let's get started." The day had begun.
