Shadyn nodded as she spoke. “You have a falcon, I assume. Naming him ‘Food’ is…amusing, really. From what I know of falconry, that is about accurate for birds of that age.”
At his next comment, he watched her expression closely. He had learned to watch people, and used the time to get a measure of who they were. She changed, but not in a negative sense. She was clearly Inarta…at this personal question, she remained open, with a few subtle aspects showing that she actually liked his company. He nodded again, though this time more to himself than to her. When she asked if he had a woman, he threw his head back laughing.
“HAhaa!! I doubt that will happen in Wind Reach any time soon. I am a bit of a misfit, you see…I was born outside of Wind Reach, and no one knows if my father was actually an Inarta…so most female Endals wouldn’t have me. And my status prevents me from marrying a woman from a lower caste. So…no…I have no wife. That is not to say that I am not interested in one, mind you…just that I have not met any women I think fitting for me…yet.”
He contemplated adding more, describing to her why not just any woman would do…but someone who could understand him…and at the same time, be different enough to complete in him what was lacking. But…the language barrier would have prevented communicating that effectually. This was the first person he had met in Endrykas that genuinely liked him…and, as best he could tell, he liked her, too. In the immediate sense, she would be able to help him make heads or tails of this city of tents. In the long run…who knows what good she might do for him?
“If you have no family here, where do you live? Alone? Or are you part of some other group?”
