AppearanceRace: Human, Svefra
Gender: Male
Age: 54
Birthday: 20th of Summer, 461 AV.
Birthplace: Suvan Sea
Appearance: Years of sailing on the Suvan Sea have left Calders skin dark and sun-scorched. Often reeking of fishguts, seawater, tobacco or booze, occasionally all four, Calder doesn't exactly smell pleasant most of the time either. Needless to say Calder isn't exactly a handsome and alluring man, surprisingly though there are a good deal of people who find him strangely charming.
A decent size at six foot even and weighing 200 lbs, Calder's body has held up frighteningly well despite his age. With extremely dark muddy blue eyes most don't take Calder for a Svefra, something that nearly cost him his life as a babe. Dark black hair that is matted into long tendrils of hair, a style often mistakenly reffered to as dreadlocks, adorns the top of Calder's head hanging down past his shoulders. Calder also has a beard that he braids, and is slightly better maintained than his hair. Often times Calder will twine trinkets and other shiny baubles in his hair, both facial and head.
Character ConceptNot one much for fighting, Calder is apt enough to throw a harpoon or stab someone with it should the need call. Calder has lived as long as he has by avoiding unnecessary conflict and danger. One way he has avoided trouble all these years is with a bit of skill of with fortune telling, not particularly apt with any one discipline. Instead Calder gets by piecing together a narrative using a variety of fortune telling skills. Calder's chief fortune telling mainstays are tarot and haruspicy, often using fish guts. Occasionally he has been able to get crude readings from a strange combination of augury, hydromancy and aeromancy. Calder is almost constantly looking for signs of danger in his readings, whenever he ends up in a port for long Calder will end up with a regular string of customers coming to him worried about their futures.
Despite his cautious nature, trying to probe out danger at every turn, Calder is quite the reckless man. Drinking more than is advised, smoking heavily of tobacco, sleeping with just about anything willing whether they are actually available or not. Calder loves his indulgences and takes them wherever he can find them. Calder has seen death a lot in his life and suspects he'll be meeting Dira any day now. If anything that has just strengthened Calder's resolve to enjoy himself as much as possible till the day he can no longer escape deaths embrace.
Character HistoryCalder's first brush with death came very early on in life, almost shortly after his birth. Calder's eyes were a dark muddy blue color that were mistaken for brown at first. Nearly getting him offered to Laviku until the Lia of their pod noticed the hint of blue, during the ceremony where he was to be offered. Calder's mother was brought to tears with gratitude as this was the first of five children to be born with blue eyes. Due to her earlier misfortune she took great interest in raising her son, teaching him the art of tarot reading. Their pod was peaceful enough, mostly just fisherman and traders, and for a time Calder's life was peaceful. Then the first great tragedy of Calder's life came.
Calder was only ten at the time, he could tell his mother was uneasy she wouldn't say why. She went to meet with the Lia leaving Calder on her casinor, instructing him to stay in the cabin and not come out for any reason. Not long after the storm struck, it came out of nowhere with an almost unnatural ferocity. The casinor was tossed around on violent waves, a mere child's toy before Zulrav's strength. Eventually the storm passed, the sea calmed and everything returned to normal. Somehow the casinor had managed to survive with hardly any damage. The rest of the pod however was not so lucky, broken ships were sinking below the waves, the dead and injured following suit. Calder did his best to help he was but a child though, only a handful of ships survived the violent storm. The Lia was gone, her ship destroyed and the pardisa missing. The pod's remnants gathered who and what they could and set out looking for a new pod to join.
Calder as his mother's only child was allowed to keep her ship, even after joining a new pod. Often he was told that he was lucky to have his own ship so young, eventually it caused him to change the name of the ship and Morbid Treasure became his home. Calder lived among the pod for a good time, learning to sail and fish learning the ways of his people. However one day they passed by another pod and a lovely maiden caught his eye, just like that Calder was gone. The girl's name was Candence she was a fortune teller too, haruspicy as opposed to tarot though, they taught each other, learned each other's discipline. Before long they learned of each other, it wasn't long before they swore to each other, a mark of Cheva appearing to cement their oath. They were young and in love, Calder was happy and his life was peaceful, for a time.
For several days Calder saw things strange things, birds dropped from the sky, foul winds blew and dark waves lapped at the pods boats. The organs of his fish seemed strange, they spoke to him of dark things he didn't quite understand. Even the cards spoke of dark and terrible things, Calder wasn't apt enough to understand though. Candence saw similar things but she understood no better than Calder. Eventually it became clear as sickness swept over the pod, it was swift and deadly. First it was the old and infirm, then the young, eventually it spread to the rest, nothing they did seemed to stop it. They cursed Vayt and pleaded with Rak'keli, some even suspected a member of the shroud was among them. The disease snatched Candence from Calder, he cried as Cheva's mark turned into a shadow over his heart.
Calder found himself once again in a pod without a Lia, this time though with a small fleet of ships and not even half enough people to sail them. Luckily it wasn't long before another pod found them. empty ships were gifted to some of the young men and women of the pod that saved them. Calder wasn't exactly happy in the new pod, too consumed with his grief to reach out to his new family. Eventually though Calder began to come out of his shell engaging other members of the pod, offering his skills as a fortune teller instead of just fishing quietly at the edge of the pod. A slightly older woman named Serene began to frequent his ship, almost daily asking for a reading, hardly seeming to care for the answers. Other members of the pod eventually told him that she wasn't coming to see his cards. Calder had grown fond of her too and they became closer, there wasn't that same spark there was with Candence, that instant attraction that had caused him to find a new pod. Things were good though, their relationship was a kinder, gentler affair.
Things were good though and eventually they swore to be only together, and Calder found himself with a new mark from Cheva. They traveled together with the pod for years, they had a few children. Then one day at a port Serene caught a knife in the throat from some two-bit thief. She was dead before anyone knew what was going on, and Calder found himself with another shadowy mark over his heart. Calder retreated from the pod again, leaving the rearing of his children to the others. It didn't last as long that time though, when he finally came back though Calder didn't have it in him to stick around. Entrusting his children to the pod Calder left drifting from pod to pod across the Suvan, looking for someplace new.
One day he came across a pirate pod, the Lia was a young thing, younger than Calder at that point at least. The pod filled with the young and foolhardy looking for thrills and pleasures the life of fisherman and traders couldn't bring. Surprisingly Calder fell right in with them, he wasn't exactly a young man anymore but his skill with fortune telling proved useful to them. Also turned out the Lia had a thing for older men, it was a all fire and passion. Nothing like before Calder loved freely among the young women of the pod, and occasionally the men, The Lia did the same. For a few years he followed them around, helping to keep them supplied with fish when the trade routes fell quiet, telling them what the signs said before battle, keeping out of battle except for the smallest of ships. For a time Calder felt more alive than ever before awash in coin, love and luxury he was happier he had been in a long time.
One day they got a tip off about a trade ship all the way from Zeltiva that was making it's way along the coast, stopping at every major port on it's way up to Syliras. By all reports the ship was heavy with coin, goods and ripe for the picking with only a light armament. Calder read the cards, sacrificed fish and watched the omens. None of it seemed good, he warned the Lia but the fruit was to juicy for her to pass up. When the time came Daresh remained behind with the other support ships of the pod. The moment they fell out of site he knew they wouldn't be coming back, yet he waited hoping against hope he would be wrong. As night fell there was still no sign and the non combatants of the pod went to see what had happened. They found the pod decimated, the battle was long since over, they picked among the wreckage for survivors and valuables but found little.
For a third time in his life Calder found himself in a destroyed pod, the remaining ships split to the winds seeking refuge. Calder drifted from pod to pod, port to port, unwilling to give up his life of excess. Running from his demons, the other pods welcomed him for the most part but were glad to see him go. Calder had earned a bit of a reputation as a token of bad luck and he believed it as well. Calder would follow a pod to port, then usually find some reason to linger when they decided to leave. Occasionally he found new lovers, though rarely for long and sometimes even paying for the affections of others. Thus Calder continued to drift adopting the name stormeye, refusing to adopt the name of whatever pod he found himself in. Occasionally he would come along one of his children, get caught up on their lives but eventually see them off as well.
