Pale and slender like others of his ilk, Velarian can be seen the epitome of the Symenestra race. He is tall yet lean, with too lanky arms to be mistaken for a human even at long distance. When he moves, he does so with the inherit grace of a spider balancing along the threads of its web, eerily slowly, deliberate.
Sharp nails protrude from his finger tips, too long and keen to be confused for anything but claws, Velarian tends to hide them during meetings with strangers. In a harsh contrast to his almost black nails, his hair is of a subdued silver color, reminding of cobwebs in late summer.
When not working he wears his hair loose, the strands falling down to his shoulders, framing a narrow face with high cheekbones and dark, ruby eyes.
Velarian is by no means a strong man, but when needed he moves quicker than most would give him credit for. Never having learned even basic combat techniques, he can neither boast fancy scars, nor does he own any weapons. Coming from a family of weavers and tailors, he can often be found wearing some sort of robe on top of his Symenestrian armor, preferably in dark, quiet colors.

Outwardly cool and distanced, Velarian is a man who likes to keep his thoughts to himself. While not a loner, he has problems warming up to other people, especially outside his family. He has strong feelings for his relatives, but not all of them are exactly positive. Particularly against his brother he holds a certain amount of resentment for how he leads the web.
Inwardly he is torn between his wish to aid his family and the Symenestra race and his reluctance of damming yet another woman to an early death, he has turned down two surrogates offered to him in recent years. That said, Velarian is not against the harvest, rather he is a supporter of the idea to find ways and means to make sure the woman have a chance to survive. Other than many of his relatives (and much to their chagrin), Velarian isn't much concerned with the idea of pure lineages and to him surrogates are an acceptable way to assure the survival of the race.
Velarian has a strong tendency to over think decisions, brooding over the outcome of his choices even longer afterward. He has few aversions against violence and killing other sentient beings, but he is rarely the first to initiate such things either.
Likes: The quiet of his work room, spending time with his son and having time to think things through.
Dislikes: Turmoils, unnecessary violence, individuals with no sense or understanding for family or community and being hungry (he is not very pleasant company when hungry).

Velarian was born as the second son of Davaen Zantedeschia and a Symestrian woman named Soh Jonquil. Originally his father had set out to bring home a surrogate as mother for his second child, but instead he stumbled over Velarian's mother. Six years previous Soh had left Kalinor to find a life apart from her family and a possible early death. In Sunberth she worked as a bar maiden, thief and in professions even less honorable than that. In Sunberth she had given birth to two children and when Davaen offered her to take care of her offspring if she would marry him in return she agreed to escape poverty.
Davaen kept his promise. Two years later Soh died, giving birth to Velarien. He was a quiet child. Risen by an aging grandmother, he was taught both the basics of weaving and sewing at an early age, but excelled at neither. Showing little talents for the subtleties of war and fighting, he started to learn animation at the age of sixteen. It was an art his father had studied for a considerable time, creating mostly toys and smaller golems for rich customers. Not having inherited his father's endowment for metalworking, he specialized on working with fabrics and items created by others. Doors opening at the sound of footsteps, dresses which swirl around its wearers legs like fins around exotic fish and music instruments playing simple tunes on their own. In seasons he would sell very few things, he would also help the rest of his family sell fabrics to traders, rarely going so far to deliver them to Lhavit himself.
With seventeen his father introduced him to an older Symestrean girl from a small conservative family. On the urgings of their parents they wed only weeks later. Although his wive insisted on bearing her own child, seeing it as a service to their god and community, Velarian tried to find a surrogate instead. He wasn't very lucky doing so, often hesitant to make the last step. When he finally did agree on a girl his brother had brought back, she died on her escape from the city mere days later. Although Velarian always suspected someone helped her to get away, he never found any prove for it. Instead he gave into his wives wishes.A year later Velarian's son Davariel was born and although Sahana survived the procedure for almost a day, she still died in the end.
Having fulfilled his duty to the family, Velarian is mostly left to his own devices. Most of his time he spends in Kalinor with his son, but frequently he is also traveling to Lhavit to further his studies for animation, buying animals and selling fabric for his family. His family still wants him to take on a surrogate or two, but so far he had always found excuses to avoid it. He feels bad about it, yet has no hurry to change something about it.

Velarian is a follower of Viratas. As the second oldest son of his family, he has been conducting rituals in honor of his god since the time he was fifteen, yet he wasn't overly faithful. This changed when he met his late wife, who was a devout servant of Viratas. She inspired him to think more deeply about his believes and following her example he developed a closer connection to Viratas' teachings.
With her death, Velarian sometimes came to question his faith, but he never turned from it. Unlike some recent worshipers, he gives the aspects of life and connection precedence over violence and sustenance.
