The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

Day 12 of Spring 516AV

Brandon sat quietly on a bench near the Sundial, staring at the stars overhead, as well as Leth's ever watchful gaze. The large triangle-like landmark was rendered completely useless during nightfall, and just like just about everything depending on Syna's warm rays, the flowers were closed, their petals folded up in retirement. Well, this place was a location dedicated to the Sun goddess after all, it'd be strange if the flowers remained open at night. Likewise, there were no priestesses of Syna present, and the offerings on the shrine dated from the daylight bells. Some people would perhaps want to leave something to the Goddess by night too, but the citizens of Lhavit did not want to be rude to Leth, who was equally deserving of their appreciation and gratefulness. Even when touched by Leth's light the Sundial Circle was a beautiful location, the lack of sunlight not diminishing it at all. It changed it, just like it did to the rest of Lhavit, but it wasn't a bad thing per se. It was different, yes, but not less spectacular. The Skyglass made sure of that.

The bat sighed then, casting his gaze back to the heavens, a small blanket of stars between little open space the locations around it created. One in particular grabbed the thief's attention for a while; Koten Temple. Strange things were happening there, if rumors were to be believed. Well, “believed”. No one ever deemed rumors one hundred percent true; they were always taken with a grain of salt, and so too did the bat approach this series of recent mouth-to-mouth journalism. Yes, people had been evacuated from the Temple, and entry had been banned, but that did not mean what the rumors described had happened was to be believed. Besides, there were multiple people who told the same story, only what had transpired was drastically different. Of course that kind of nonsense was exactly that: nonsensical gossip thought up by bored housewives' imagination running wild.

A snort escaped him at the image of it, and then he frowned, picturing how that same kind of people had turned the cogs of the rumor-mill when it came to Dru too. Bah. He got up from his spot on the Skyglass bench, shivering momentarily at the lack of warm crystal, and then he bent backwards -not as far as he could, but just a bit- feeling his vertebrae crackle from the long period of time he'd spent in a slumped position on the bench. He rolled his shoulder a couple times then too, though they moved without a sound. Once done with it, the bat moved to the nearest square, feeling he wanted to see more than one little patch of night sky.

Indeed, as expected, the square had a larger view on the heavens and the stars, but also on the other peaks. One building from Shinyama could easily be seen from the thief's current position; the Twuele. It would be an excellent place to stage a break-in as Incognito; it was an important building, with important people living and working there, and it was well protected by the Shinya. A stronghold of some kind, one worth infiltrating. If Incognito managed to sneak in and out unnoticed, leaving his calling card behind, no doubt it would cause an uproar amongst the Constellations and the Shinya, and eventually amongst the citizens too. Yes, it would make rumors soar, and his name would once more be engraved in their minds. Lhavit would be on its toes.

Better yet, if he managed to place his card in the chamber of Zintila herself...! Lhavit would be on its head, turned upside down, and Brandon would be on number one on the Shinya's list of priorities. However, it meant risking a whole lot, and he'd only been here for a season. He'd rather stay a while longer, and not in jail, nor as a spirit. Attempting what he'd just thought up would mean crossing an Alvina, a being vastly more powerful than he was, and he doubted Dira would come to his aid. Yshul might, but the bat suspected he'd have to succeed first. But, did that matter at all? Even if he could pull it off, would he not be tracked down by the most capable of Shinya and investigators? Perhaps even all three towers would be joining the search. Lhavit would become a danger zone for him, and larceny would become that many times harder. A challenge, indeed, but perhaps a one-sided game of hide-and-seek he couldn't win. It would require a huge amount of preparation to get in and out, and another equally huge or even larger amount so he did not get caught during, before, or after he'd completed the job.

He stared for a bit, thinking, and then someone walked into him, causing him to snap back into the present. Brandon glanced at the woman with slightly narrowed eyes, irritated he'd been pulled from his thoughts. With knitted brow, the bat sauntered to the nearest bench, mind working hard to come up with problems and solutions for them, along with possible scenarios. Absentmindedly, he sat down on the warm crystal, leaning back and staring at the Twuele, however not processing what he saw.

Criminal Contemplations

Getting his hand son the layout of the inner structure of the Twuele would be the easiest part, heck, if he felt daring, he might not even need it -though preferably a map of the building would be memorized so he could find his way easier. If he had to make a guess of where he could find such an item, the Cosmos Center would be the first place to check. It was a pity that Sal was not around anymore; he could just have asked whether they had maps there... Ah well. Brandon would have to snoop around and see. Even if he was mistaken, and there were no charts stored at the Center, they still had a vault he could crack. It was a win-win situation.

Nevertheless, vault or no, he'd still be lacking a map. The Bharani Library might have one though, if not more. Surely if they had a geography section, they would have maps of Kalea and the rest of Mizahar. A street plan of some cities wouldn't be too far-fetched either. Then, perhaps the Bharani had an Architecture section as well, where Lhavit's most famous and spectacular buildings and architectural feats were documented. Though, he suspected he'd find the files describing the style of the building, as well as the decorations and ornaments, along with support beams and whatnot. Hm. Then, maybe he should just take a look inside himself? Surveying the area, just walking through some of the floors, comparing their layout with one-another. Though, to get in one usually needed an invitation, or be escorted there by the Shinya, usually in chains. No, Brandon wouldn't be walking in there casually, pretending like he got lost.

Bah. Well, if he failed to find a map, he'd have to either wing it, or ask someone who'd been inside the Twuele a couple times. Alses would probably be a good choice in terms of memory, but on the other hand, she would never want to aid him in his criminal affairs. She loved the city just as much as the regular citizen, if not more. No, she wouldn't allow any offense to Lhavit, let alone Zintila. Well, Brandon wasn't quite leaping to do just that either. He'd rather not get on the Goddess's bad side, any Goddess's bad side for that matter. It could only end badly. Then, he'd have to aim a little lower... the seventh floor instead of the Eighth; Aysel and Talora their abode. Yes, he felt a whole lot more comfortable with that idea, and thus he'd be less nervous when -if- he executed the heist.

However, there was still the issue of being tracked down by the Shinya and the Towers after the fact. Especially the Dusk Tower -it was the Dusk Tower, right?- bothered him, with their aurists. Sure, the Shinya had some people who practiced the discipline too, but as far as he knew, the Dusks were hailed as the best aurists in the city. The same went for some of those who studied Auristics under the tutelage of the Tower, such as Alses. Most problematic was the lack of information and knowledge the bat had of the magic. He'd caught snippets of intelligence on the magic here and there, but most of it had been speculation and conjecture. Or a drunk student boasting about what he'd be able to do once his training was finished. That source had been somewhat more trustworthy than the rumors, but still, he'd sounded an awful lot like he was trying to impress people. What he had been saying did not necessarily have to be the truth; he'd probably wanted some attention.

So, in the end, Brandon was still left with a vague idea of what an Aurist of the highest caliber could do. It seemed they could read minds, stare into your soul, reading your thoughts like a book. It allowed them to notice things that normal humanoids with weak senses couldn't, like cold sweat running down one's spine... in a crowded bar, where it was quite hard to smell those kind of things. What else was it? They could read emotions; a confrontation with an aurist Shinya had proven that. Quite possibly, detecting lies was within their possibilities as well. Some even claimed that an aurist could recognize people by the feel of whatever their magic showed them, and that they might even be able to detect whether someone had touched an object or not. And that was his greatest worry. If he left his card in Aysel and Talora their chambers, no doubt some skilled Aurist would use their magic on it, and might be able to track Brandon down. That would be extremely bad for the bat, as he considered a job failed if he was arrested afterwards due to clues left behind.

Then again, he'd left more than enough cards for the Shinya to do just that -an extremely stupid move, now he thought about it- but he hadn't been caught yet. Though perhaps it was because they'd not been taking him seriously, even after repeatedly breaching Elysium Hall, misleading and evading the Shinya guards stationed there at the same time. Or maybe there really wasn't anything to fear after all? No. No, that was a dangerous road of thought, one that only lead to defeat and arrest. That was a kind of naive optimism not fitting a thief at all. Caution was everything in this profession, if you were too careless, you did not survive for long.

However, too much caution led to stagnation and immobilization, no path safe enough to take, no action having few enough risks. One needed to find the middle ground between being daring and careful, between caution and recklessness. And that was exactly why plans needed to be made, why locations needed to be scrutinized, why security measures needed to be observed, and why preparation was more than necessary. Without the guts to take a risk here and there when the odds were not completely in your favor.

Guts or no, just staging a break-in into the Twuele was just plain recklessness. The matter hadn’t changed one bit in the bat’s mind; he could plan and scheme all he wanted, preparing for all scenarios he could come up with, but the matter of the Dusk Tower still remained a huge spanner in the works. No matter how good he was, no matter how much he’d prepared, it’d all be for naught if some Aurist could just link Incognito’s calling card back to him. He’d still be caught, and he’d still be spending more days than he desired to in jail. Or he’d be executed for crimes against Lhavit, its citizens, and its ruling body. Not to mention that if the Shinya and the leading Ethaefal duo decided to make a spectacle out of it, other people would be quick to add more offenses to the list. Kaik came to mind, and so did that annoying ghost from the library. Alses too would probably toss in her own two jade kina, not helping matters along. He imagined she’d be quite elated to see him where he belonged in her eyes; in chains, or on the chopping block.

Brandon sighed, eyes following the rise of the tower, then shifting to the stars beyond even its reach. Then, he wondered, thinking that perhaps he might be able to scale the side of the huge construction, avoiding the floors he did not have any business with. Would he be noticed if he took that route? From this distance, that was quite doubtful, especially so during Leth’s reign. For someone standing close to the tower, he’d be all but invisible too, but from somewhere in between, he might be spotted. However, a smart choice in the color of cloak he’d be wearing might help him out quite a lot. The issue though was that climbing the walls would take even more time than infiltrating the Twuele from the inside, and his best shot for getting in and out unnoticed was during rest periods, which lasted only two bells. Time was not on his side in this. However, if he planned his heist at night, he could maybe still clamber back down even when people were up and about. He shouldn’t be wearing his mask then though, as that item would be tough to hide when he was traversing the streets back home; if he even got down unnoticed. Incognito’s mask was –while doing an excellent job at hiding the bat’s face- not really inconspicuous. It was more a thing to put on when he was sure he’d be seen, such as when he’d negotiated with Alses after having kidnapped her.

No mask then. Good, while he did like the thing, he’d never had much other choice but to try and avoid the Shinya when on the prowl, and if he was sure he’d couldn’t do that, he could only run, for the mask was hard to conceal. Sure, that was his usual tactic when he was “working”, but it could never hurt to increase his repertoire of tricks just a little bit. It was far easier to claim he was taking a stroll now the city was this calm without having a suspicious mask covering his face, or hidden behind his back or under his cloak. That, or he should get someone to sew some pockets into the cloak, big enough to stash some small items in, along with a big one for the mask. Surely Dru could take care of that.

Distracted by the other possible issues and strategies, Brandon had still not forgotten about the largest problem he had to deal with. Every so often his thoughts had strayed from the route his mind had taken, getting distracted by the main issue while he was dealing with what had lead him away from that problem, and then he had thought of new possibilities, and new doubts and fears –and against those tall shadows there was also the weak candle-flame of hope- but each and every time he discarded his ideas. He did not have nearly enough information. He needed to know more about that magic before he truly could start making plans. Slowly, he got up from his spot on the bench, eyes on the square now, a new goal before him. A goal he had to reach and pass before he could think of huge, important heists.

Guess I’ll have to find myself an auristics teacher, eh?
