First Impressions

Averis has been told that she has the bearing of a proud Iceglaze. Uncertain as she is as to whether or not it is a good thing, she still believes she captures all the finer qualities of her tribe: the sheer black hair tinged in blue, her eyes expressing more in blues and greens than reds or yellows, prominent cheekbones and a slim jaw. Along with this, she bears the minor height from her mother, the slightly freckled complexion from her father, and a perpetually annoyed look her grandmother either grew up with or trained herself into.

Despite her closed-off look, Averis greets people in a friendly manner, even though it means she must smile more often than she may wish. She walks about with an inviting look, because otherwise everyone would think her stalking about suspiciously, no matter how graceful her gait. In Avanthal, her family preferred darker colors to better retain warmth, and she continues that tradition as she travels to Lhavit, though she is certain the heat will kill her no matter what color she wears.

Second Glance

Growing up with the perpetual scowl inherited from her grandmother has forced Averia to exaggerate her happiness for everyone’s sake rather than her own, and she does occasionally feel it wear on her mentally. It is not that she dislikes the company of others, but due to her eyes having the unique quality of not telegraphing her emotions well enough (the shades between each color, when viewed without direct sunlight, are too slight to be distinguished), she constantly had to reassure her friends and family that she was doing fine. This has ultimately led Averis to downplay her ailments and trials and oversell all the pleasant things out of habit, to the detriment of her health sometimes.

It is for this reason that her parents encouraged her to travel out of Avanthal to other cities. “Though they may seem heartless in their regard,” Averis’ father said, “they do not see you as family, and so will not force their attention on you out of obligation. If they give you attention, they do it of their own choosing.” Averis hopes to have this attitude proven, though it may seem aloof and bitter in comparison to the Vantha attitude.

Once Upon a Time...

Averis is the fourth of eight children to her parents within the Iceglaze tribe. Her elder siblings are all brothers, and younger siblings are all sisters, so while she was treated a baby at one point, she quickly became responsible over the younger siblings in a way her elder brothers never had to be. They would have the opportunity to boss the rest around, but they never had to make sure the children were properly washed in time for dinner, or that they were doing their chores or anything else in that vein. Though Averis frequently bemoaned the responsibility, she could never find fault with her siblings, young and old. They were the few who did not constantly ask after her emotions, as they learned from physical tells rather than eye color.

When Averis was old enough and had the time, she learned the craft of carving from her father, first beginning on pieces of wood and working up to rocks. She frequently saw him at work and the finished products he would deliver to different people, and it inspired her to want something like that for herself and her family, even though it would be a difficult dream to maintain in the culture she lived in. Every suitor who came knocking, however, always seemed to displease her father, and he would frequently turn them away.

It confused Averis greatly until her father confessed to her that he would see her achieve those dreams she had, rather than be tied to a family that would keep her in the home. And thus she was encouraged to set out into the world, to learn of its treasures and of herself, before making the decision to marry. “Learn to love yourself,” he swore to her, “and then loving someone else will be so much easier.”

So now Averis sets out to find all she can learn to make herself into the person she believes she can become. She sets out to learn techniques to make her a master carver, the behaviors of other cultures, and the building blocks of her mind, body, and soul. She is certain once she reaches that point of understanding, she will be able to return to Avanthal, perfected as the Icestone lovingly crafted by her own father.

Say No More

Averis was raised speaking only Vani until she was 10. As such, when she began learning Common, she spoke it in an accent, certain vowels and consonants lilting off the tongue in an odd way. Outside of these experiences, Averis has never had much luck with learning new languages. The only Nari she learned while in Wind Reach was "hello," "yes," "no," and "thank you." No matter how hard people worked to help her improved, she could never grasp it properly.
