Soren WhiTevine

Image
Nicknames: Ren, Sores

Race: Vantha
Gender: Male
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 150 lbs

Age: Twenty Three
Date of Birth: 1st of Winter, 492 AV
Birthplace: Avanthal, Teldera

Religion:
Morwen, Laviku, Rak'keli

Languages:
Fluent - Vani
Basic - Common
Poor - Fravata *While he does frequently find himself socializing with the Svefra (in Common as a default), he only recently started learning their language. He can barely share more than a few words in Fravata, often embarrassing himself and giving his fellow Svefra friends a good laugh whenever he attempts their colorful language. This doesn't deter him though. Soren absolutely loves the genuine, whole-hearted expressions and the use of many different gestures, believing it will improve his ability to animate his stories better.

Physical Description

helloAs a full-blooded Vantha, Soren's hair is a glossy black with shimmering amethyst that intertwines within it's hues that reflect the brilliant colors of the Aurora Borealis. His skin is a rich, slightly sun-licked praline color from his years spent with the Coolwaters and Svefra at sea, while his eyes rarely ever remain one color. They often switch from royal blue, powdered periwinkle, sugarplum purple, glittering amber, hazel brown, and mossy green according to whatever emotion takes residence in his heart. However, his eyes always rest in royal blue, a color that people are able to recall the most.

helloWhile Vantha mostly have round faces, there are a few stragglers like Soren with his more triangular face and small cleft in his chin. However, his nose is somewhat small, straight-sloped and round like a button (the bridge of his nose being slightly crooked). His top lip is slightly thinner and dips into a soft, subtle cupid's bow while his bottom lip is more full. Due to his facial features, he appears but a youth rather than an adult, his big, child-like eyes being the worst offender. His hold would tease him that perhaps his ancestors were once mixed instead of full-blood due to the contradicting shape of his eyes.

helloSoren isn't particularly big or brawny due to spending his time studying or running around helping others. However because he's always on the move, he has a very lean, slender build with sturdy, toned legs. Although his arms aren't as strong as his legs, they are also somewhat muscle-bound from physical labor, often offering to help load and unload ships for the Coolwater Hold when he isn't busy. While he's considered quite tall to the Vantha, standing at a five feet and ten inches, compared to other races that usually exceed six foot, he's quite the short fellow. Soren doesn't like to admit this, but he's generally more nervous around those taller than him since he's used to being the lofty one in his Hold.

in detail :
helloSoren feels that his purpose in life is to help. Whether he's helping the good or the enemy, he believes that everyone deserves a second chance at life. Because of his family background, he has no problem being surrounded by people at all times and often enjoys it! Even when people take advantage of him time and time again, he'll always try his best to tolerate them in hopes that one day he can win their friendship. Since he is intuitive, he tries his best to reach out to everyone and explain his thoughts thoroughly so everyone can come to an agreement. Nothing good can come from arguing! While his intentions are always good and genuine, he sometimes lets his feelings get in the way when he is overwhelmed, especially when a friend is stuck in a sticky situation and he's unable to help them. Overall, Soren is an extremely patient person that wants to help and anxiously awaits for the first person to ask.

Character History

in detail :
helloSoren's childhood is pretty much uniform to Vantha culture. Born into the Whitevine Hold, he trained in the art of medicine with his father and assisted his father at the Whitevine Healing Center whenever he could. Sometimes they'd have the pleasure to visit the other Holds to offer their healing services and that was what Soren enjoyed the most. He would even offer to help with menial tasks while he wasn't busy with his father. As Soren grew older, he thought that perhaps he was meant to work with the Icewatch or even leave Avanthal completely since his feet were always itching to leave the Hold to assist others where healing may be scarce. When Soren met his cousin, Felix Coolwater, Felix opened the door that he was looking for. The door to Soren's niche... Outside the Whitevine Hold and into the unknown.

helloWhile their families aren't in the same hold, Felix and Soren were still somehow able to meet, by providence they say. When Felix was sent to the Whitevine Healing Center for a nasty wound, that was where the two met. Johan, Soren's father, recognized him immediately from his wife's side of the family and introduced Soren to Felix. Since Soren was chosen to tend to Felix wounds, they got to know each other very quickly and became good friends. Even after Felix's wounds were healed they promised to keep in touch and they did.

helloFelix often hired Soren for his healing in case the Coolwater crew ever got injured on one of their ventures at sea. In return, Felix taught Soren all he knew about the alignment of the stars. Originally, Felix tried to teach him how to swim. However, all Soren would do was thrash in fear of hypothermia or drowning. It's quite funny how safe and confident Soren felt on a boat when a storm could easily capsize them. Unfortunately, that was exactly what happened. The Coolwater crew, including Felix, was killed in the storm while for some strange reason Soren was spared.

helloThis trip was different. Soren had to pack a lot more than usual due to the longevity of the trip that the Coolwater crew proposed. Felix hired Soren again since he was someone Felix trusted deeply. After all, anything could happen out at sea and they might need Soren. They had planned to sail to Wind Reach and Lhavit in attempt to trade goods. However, in the outer Ahger Ocean near Wind Reach, a perilous storm caught the ship in it's angry suckling waves. They jettisoned cargo off the ship to lighten the load and stabilize their ship, survival being their new priority. However, the large waves capsized the ship despite their efforts and prayer to Laviku. Many of the Coolwaters ended up getting caught under the ship or jerked into the sea and sucked under the waves. As a result they all drowned... Soren was also flung off the side when they capsized, flinging limbs everywhere in attempt to stay afloat. Soren couldn't swim but, by sheer luck or providence once again, he was able to grab onto some of the very few floating cargo that were tossed around in the waves.

helloThe storm then passed over as if it was appeased by swallowing the crew and left Soren to fend for himself. All he had to survive was his soaked bag, the few floating cargo and bits of wreckage that surrounded him. As the day dragged along, Soren's energy was drained into the sea from having to helplessly cling onto the cargo for so long. He was angry, scared, and heavily grieved. Nothing else could be done! Why couldn't he have died with them instead of having to die like this? Night was slowly rolling over before a lone straggler sailed nearby. Soren expected the ship to sail past without a glance since he didn't have the energy to scream for help. However, the ship shredded through the waves in his direction and fast. It almost seemed that the ship's crew pinpointed him the moment he prayed for Laviku to drown him and get it over with.

helloThe strangers dragged him onto the ship, along with the other cargo that they were able to salvage from the wreckage. It wasn't until Soren was on the ship that he realized that these people were different from him. They had sandy sun-bleached hair, many marked by Laviku, with pools of blue in their eyes that didn't change like his did. No, they weren't Vantha, they were Svefra and their leader didn't look to happy with him either... They all squabbled among themselves in their own colorful and expressive language. Whether they were angry or not, Soren didn't notice. He was fascinated with their expressions and gestures despite his current dehydrated condition. One of the younger Svefra gave him a little bit of water to drink so he would be well enough to talk, then the leader finally spoke...

helloShe asked many interrogating questions concerning what he was doing out at sea and why. As Soren explained the best he could about the storm and what had happened, the Lia watched him through squinted eyes. "What if he's lying? What if they were actually pirates that got what they deserved from Laviku? Throw him overboard!" The crew bombarded the Lia, not trusting the newcomer. Soren then offers to pay them to take him home, revealing the last of his miza from his soggy bag. The Lia's son, Dylan, suggested taking his possessions and throwing him back into the sea since they had no intention of sailing through the chilling seas of Avanthal. The Lia simply refused Soren's offer. Were they going to kill him? Where else could Soren go beside Avanthal? To this day, Soren looks back on this memory and claims that the gods were trying to lead him. They had to burn the bridges that led him home to show that they had better plans right in front of him...

helloWhen Soren was with the Coolwaters, they originally planned on arriving in Lhavit. Perhaps he was meant to go there... Where the gods wanted him. Soren then offered once again, however this time for a passage to Lhavit and was willing to work to pay as well. While the Svefra crew still wanted to kill Soren, the Lia accepted. Having extra hands and being paid for it? She planned to use Soren's gullible tendencies to her advantage, but the Lia had her doubts about the scrawny boy being able to help. The Lia usually had the boy cleaning the deck, running around for every beck and call. Dylan enjoyed this the most, often overworking the young Vantha and toying with him whenever he was bored, nicknaming him Sores to agitate him. Despite the fact that Dylan would constantly bully Soren and try his patience, Soren prayed to his gods that they would one day get along or at least tolerate each other until they dropped him off at Lhavit.

helloAlthough it wasn't the way Soren would have liked, the chance had come in the form of a serious accident. Dylan was diving, fishing for food with a spear in hand, when one of the Svefra had tried to spear the same fish but had struck Dylan's arm partially through instead. Although Dylan was considered an enemy, Soren used his knowledge of medicine to save Dylan and his arm. He had gained respect from the Svefra crew, including the Lia and Dylan. They weren't as cold or closed off from Soren then, and often asked Soren to teach them his knowledge of medicine. Sometimes when they sailed through the night, Soren would share stories he learned from his mother with the Svefra crew. In return, the crew would share stories about the seas and the stars. Sometimes, they'd tell the story in Fravata*see "Language: Poor" while one of the other Svefra would interpret for Soren. Despite the crew's new view of Soren and his heart, Dylan would avoid Soren, his pride wounded as badly as his arm. However, as his arm healed, so did his heart. Although it took almost the full trip, Dylan and Soren finally did form a solid friendship.

helloIt was a hard goodbye... The Seaglass crew had saved him and a part of him wanted to stay with them forever. However, he knew he had a purpose in Lhavit. “It's his duty. A good healer can't pick and choose. If he can help, then he must." *see signature for author of quote. All Soren can do is pray that he'll see them again. But for now, his story begins here...

hello

Despite the fact that Dylan would constantly bully Soren and try his patience, Soren prayed to his gods that they would one day get along or at least tolerate each other until they dropped him off at Lhavit. Soren Whitevine

Postby Soren Whitevine on July 19th, 2016, 2:46 am

Gnosis Story :
20 , Spring , 516 AV j

————"It's a wonder how a landlubber like you is still alive." Lia'Liliana grumbled, resting her elbows against the smooth wood edge of the Palivar. Her tired but wary eyes kept a close watch on the other Svefra, hunting and swimming in the calm sea below. "You can't even swim. What good are you on a ship if you can't swim?" Her words hashed at him. Soren stood respectively silent, several ticks behind her with his hands clasped firmly together behind his back. He had grown used to her constant, nagging questions and learned not to bother with giving an answer. The old Lia would never believe him, so he let her badger him with her suspicions. Lia'Liliana rotated her head just enough to peek back at him with an accusing glare. "I bet you were a prisoner. That would explain why you were on a ship. Where were they taking you, little prisoner?" Soren shrugged, sharing a light smile in response. He wasn't a prisoner, and he told her already before but that was okay. He was beginning to believe that the old Lia enjoyed picking at him, coming up with several scenarios to solve his "mysterious" past.

————"Is there anything you need me to do while we wait for them to catch dinner? I could swab the deck if you'd like." Soren inquired, rolling up his sweaty sleeves. The Lia's bleached, white dreads flipped as she turned her head towards the sea and waved him away dismissively. Interpreting her gesture as a yes, Soren scampered off to grab a mop and bucket. The moment the Vantha returned, the most horrendous scream drained the color of his eyes to the palest blue, causing him to drop everything and grab his ears. "Get him up there now!" He heard one of the Svefra shout. Soren darted to the edge of the boat where Lia'Liliana was throwing over several ropes for the men. "What in the name of Laviku happened!" The old woman shrieked at them, pulling the ropes with all her might. "Don't just stand there, help me!" Her brilliant blue eyes boiled with anger as her arms throbbed to hold whoever was on the other end. Soren immediately grasped the ropes and heaved as hard as he could, his limbs shaking with adrenaline. Did someone get attacked by a shark? Were they being eaten by sharks?

————Dylan, the Lia's son, was dragged over the edge and onto the deck, soaking wet with the outer upper part of his arm impaled by a large spear. By the looks of it, it barely nicked bone, but the muscle had to be severely damaged. "Oh gods, I'm so sorry! We were aiming for the same fish a-and he got in the way! Oh g-gods, oh gods!" Ralph cried out, pulling himself over the edge after Dylan. Dylan was grabbing at his arm, sucking in air through his teeth, writhing in pain unable to get any words out. The Lia struck Ralph across the face, her nails drawing blood from his cheek. "You will be sorry," She hissed close to the sobbing Svefra's face, "If he dies from this I'll throw you to the sharks—Someone get that thing out of his arm!" She shouted out to the crew members as they clamored back onto the Palivar. Soren jumped in front of Dylan, shielding him before one of the crew members could reach for the spear. "Stop! Wait!"

————"Wait for my son to bleed to death? You'd like that wouldn't you, little shyke." The Lia glowered at him, shoving Soren away and gripping the spear. The other crew members jerked Soren away from the two and held him tight. "No, listen! If you pull that spear out of his arm, he will bleed to death." Soren flailed in their grasp, kicking his legs furiously. Lia'Liliana froze, her knuckles turning white from her grasp. "How would you know something like that? You just want him to die. I know. I seen things. You can't hide those eyes of yours..." Soren wrenched himself hard but the Svefras were much stronger than him. "Look at them now. Why would they look like that? If I was pleased with this, they'd be gold. Please, let me help him!" The Lia's eyes squinted at him but a hint of self-doubt clouded her gaze, loosening her grip on the spear. "I can help him, trust me. I know Dylan and I have had our skirmishes but I would never let someone die without trying my hardest to heal them. I have linen and medical items in my bag, I know how to tend to wounds. I'm a healer, it's my job!"

————The Lia let out a frustrated screech, kneeling over her son and clutching his hand while waving for people to move. "Get his bag! My gods, you petchers are just standing around!" The crew members finally released Soren, all of them scrambling for his bag and other items in their cargo that would help. Soren slid over to Dylan and pulled out his waterskin, running it over the wound around where the spear impaled his arm. "I need my linens!" Soren demanded, making sure the spear didn't move around in his arm to worsen the wound. He seen his father tend to a wound similar to this, he mainly needed to apply pressure around the wound and against the spear so the bleeding stops. Ralph hurried over with Soren's bag, digging out the linens and handing it to him. "Get away from my son." The Lia growled at Ralph. Soren ignored her, grabbing the linen from Ralph and immediately wrapping it around Dylan's arm against the spear. "Okay, I'll need my dose of Sundyra water ready for pulling out the spear—"

————As Soren was applying pressure on the wound to stabilize the impaling object, the Lia interrupted him. "I thought you said taking out the petching spear would bleed him out!" Soren raised his eyes toward her which melted into an eerily calming royal blue. "It would if we didn't have something to stop the bleeding. The Sundyra water will help, and we'll have to pull out the spear fast so I can check for severed veins and apply the dose—The dose is labeled, please get it and open it so I can pour it in the wound quickly." Soren switched his gaze to Ralph. The shaken Svefra nodded and hastily rummaged through the bag, pulling it out and opening it for him. "Alright ma'am, I need you to remove the spear fast. Make sure it comes out the angle it came in so it doesn't cut up anything else important. Can someone check his pulse, please? Two fingers on his neck and start counting the ticks..." Soren hadn't realized how much he sounded like his father at this point, taking the lead in such a stressful situation. Granted, Soren was a bit distracted and wasn't going in perfect order but he was doing his best despite his inexperience of working without another healer.

————"Stay awake, Dylan. I know it hurts but I'll give you something for the pain in a second, alright?" The dirty blonde nodded to Soren, clenching his teeth and squinting his eyes shut as his mother gripped the spear. "You can do it. Watch the angle—" The Lia glared at Soren, "I know I can do it. Curse me if I fail!" Lia'Liliana tore the spear out as fast as she could, flinging it away from them. Soren ripped the dose out of Ralph's hand and made sure it splashed around inside the gaping wound that now bled more freely. Fortunately, the important artery in his arm couldn't have been severed, tucked somewhere (he didn't really know the specifics) closer to his torso and not where the spear had struck. Still, bleeding to death or gaining an infection was still possible even if the spear missed one of the major arteries. He'd have to replace the wrapping constantly to make sure Dylan's arm wouldn't get infected. Soren pinched the wound shut with his finger and thumb, then wrapped around more linen. For a moment, Soren feared that Dylan would lose too much blood and die. No, I won't let that happen. No more lives should be lost. Not even Dylan's... The man was pale and sweaty with the normal mischievous glint in his eyes completely gone, replaced by severe distress and agony. Soren could almost feel his heart literally rip itself apart and melt down into the pit of his stomach with compassion towards the Svefra. Thank the gods that the spear got his arm and not somewhere else like his heart...

————After an exhausting day, Soren took a moment to rest on the deck and under the blanket of Leth's stars. He enjoyed being around people and often hated being alone, but the cabin was eerily quiet and uncomfortable except for Dylan's soft snoring. Once the last drip of adrenaline was shed, the crew had remained quiet the rest of the day, occasionally peeking inside the cabin to see how Dylan was doing and sharing an uncomfortable nod with Soren. The Vantha was so sure that the Svefra would finally trust and open up to him, but alas, they were more standoffish than ever. Did that make him regret taking action? No... His father would have been proud of him. Maybe even Rak'Keli... But would she ever notice him? His father was an amazing healer, yet he was never marked by the goddess? "I am proud, dear one." Soren lurched back from the edge, landing on his backside. "You—" He breathed, pointing at a dark-haired maiden that stood before him with her feet tottering on the wooden edge where his hand once was just moments ago. "Dylan was very cruel to you... Yet you helped him. Why?"

————Soren scrambled off his bottom, bowing before the goddess with his forehead touching the wooden floorboards. "I-it's my job... A healer c-can't pick and choose who to save... My father always told me it was our duty, doesn't matter who it is. If we can heal them, then we must..." The goddess smiled, lighting off the edge and landing before his bowing body without a sound. "Your father taught you well." She knelt down to him and lifted his face to her own with a gentle finger under his chin. "Would you still save him if he killed your kindred spirit, Felix?" Soren blinked, dumbfounded, his body tensing as her eyes searched his. Would he? He couldn't lie to her even if he wanted to... He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to imagine such a scenario.

————He pictured Dylan's empty eyes as he was bleeding out... The emptiness that tormented Soren almost as powerfully as the image of his cousin being dragged into Laviku's depths. There was something that disturbed Soren about watching a death, even if it was from old age. Soren shuttered, pulling his head away from the goddess' touch. "I couldn't just... I can't... Even if he did kill my cousin, I wouldn't be able to watch him die..." The goddess then took his hand and kissed it, her lips soft and cool on his hand. "Promise me you will never turn your back on the opportunity to heal that which is damaged. Healing must be offered freely to both friend and enemy alike."*oath is quoted from healing lore in the second paragraph, right after the gnosis URL link. Soren raised himself up and nodded his head vigorously. "Anything for you! I promise..." The moment the words left Soren's chapped lips, a shining swirling sigil, colored a brilliant and glittering opal, formed directly on the back of his right hand where the goddess had kissed him.

————"Don't you ever sleep?" Soren flinched, glancing back to see the old Lia approaching him. Before he could explain himself, he returned his gaze to see that the goddess was no longer beside him. "The stars'll be here again, I don't understand why you're still looking at 'em after all that's happened today. Aren't you tired?" Soren didn't respond, his eyes flickering toward the sparkling sea that gently lapped at the Palivar's side. Where'd she go? The young Vantha rubbed his hand where the mark had formed. "You must be stronger than you look." Dragged out of his thoughts by the Lia's words, Soren straightened himself and raised a brow. He honestly expected the Svefra to make another comment on how "he must be a prisoner" because of whatever her reasoning was on his night-owl tendencies. "I came over here to say... Thanks... Don't let that go to your head though or you'll get a lash from me I promise you! Ah... I'll see you at the crack of dawn, Sores..." She gave him a rough pat on the shoulder and drew away towards her own cabin. "Yes, ma'am..." Soren whispered, a soft smile forming on his lips as he studied his hand once more. "Thank you..."
