The Meadows Public House
Catering to foreign traders, the Meadows Public House, is one of the few locations that does not require exceptionally agility to comfortably inhabit. It is easily reached by the red strand road, and is located very near the woven gates.
The public house is the fourth largest structure in Kalinor, and the best lit. The main room is large and round with two stories. The second story is accessed by a narrow, somewhat perilous staircase in the southwest corner, as the Symenestra do not fully comprehend the difficulty of balancing on surfaces.
The first floor has a modest hearth, pantry and cooking space hidden away in the east corner, but the rest of the room is devoted entirely to wooden tables and chairs made from walnut. A few sofas are created from ledges carved into the stone and stacked with an enormous amount of pillows and fabric. A fireplace is tucked into the north wall, crackling cozily.
In an attempt to make the space familiar, the stone walls are painted a deep brown, reminiscent of wood. Deep green fabric and elaborate tapestries depicting forest scenes add warmth to the walls.
The second level has a very small common area in its center: a few chairs arranged around a table on a rug. A dozen locked doors surround the room, all bearing the raised carving of a different flower.
The doors open to a long wooden bridge, exposed to the empty space of the cavern. At the end of the bridge is a round structure, typical of Symenestran homes. Within is all the creature comforts found in a typical inn room, but on a plusher scale. The beds are bigger and softer than usual, the rugs silken, the linens exquisite and a fresh warming pan is brought every evening. Despite the remote location of the city, flowers matching the room’s namesake are always on the writing desk provided.
Rooms vary in size and number of beds. The room’s colors and patterns tend to match the hues and shapes of its floral namesake. Despite their reputation as a grim people, the Symenestra have an abiding love for jewel tones and each space shows it.
The Proprietor and Staff
The public house is directly connected with the Aconitum, an organization that oversees and facilitates trade in Kalinor. Visiting traders are housed at the public house for the duration of their stays.
The Meadows is run by the head of the Aconitum, Laudavyn Aconite, and his extended web. Servers and attendants are all related and share both coloring (dark hair and gold eyes) and a gracious disposition. Laudavyn’s primary responsibilities lie with the Aconitum, but he will make frequent appearances at the Meadows. In his absence, his charming niece, Sonara, runs the establishment.
Only the cook is unrelated, a rare human transplant specifically brought to cater to human tastes. A secretive fellow, it is rumored he has taken a Symenestran wife and remains in the city for her happiness.
The deep green, velvet uniform of the staff covers their armor and is either a dress with bell sleeves and gold trim or cotton leggings with a tunic.
