Summer 26
Leadership was something all squires are taught eventually, some focusing on it, others just to know that some orders while morally dubious would be strategically. For Garland though, it was a chore.
He was never meant to lead, he was meant to get orders and ignore them if they were stupid. Not only that, Garland had to lead his squad of squires against someone else's own squad. He had led a small group before, but they did end up beaten almost instantly.
To be fair they were fighting some amazingly skilled fighter that could have easily taken down a few knights on his own.
His squad of squires had Oriana, Lilly, Narick, and a new squire by the name of Rolf.
Rolf was a strange one to say the least, he didn't talk much, he wielded a large longsword, he would call it a greatsword, but it's simply a longsword, and if you tell him otherwise, he's liable to punch you in the face. That itself is not strange, the strange part was Rolf was as durable and strong as a ox at a size smaller than Garland, being 5'2.
This small man tackled Garland and actually lifted him up. This lineup was an odd one, but well balanced. Garland didn't know the people all too well, but they did try and jump him in the forest for an exercise once, they were good, but they needed to work together better.
Rolf was the odd one out, striking out on his own, he occasionally listened to orders but he would ignore them if he felt it was the wrong decision. He was a loner, and that was bad for the team as a whole.
Garland would have rather had Sylvia here, she was smart, thought-on-her-feet, quick, and knows magic better than Lilly, although Lilly's skill with a blade was nearly unmatched, especially since her favored blade was so uncommon.
Garland looked at his crew, Oriana could hold and swing a large battleaxe, but she was also rather good with her shortbow. Garland didn't know who he was going to be fighting, but they wouldn't expect the archers to be better at swinging axes than shooting, if they decide to attack the archers at the back they would get a nasty surprise from Ori.
"Alright, we're going to have a mock battle with another group of squires, they should be here soon. Ori, Narick stay at the back, pick your shots, don't hit any of our own team. Rolf, go to the left flank, make sure no one blindsides our archers, Lilly, to the right, throw fire at them and if they get close, use that weird sword of yours." Garland didn't like being in the open, but there was no place to ambush the other squad from.
"Ugh, I should be the one leading, I'm the senior squire here." Lilly complained and went over to Oriana and Narick.
"I don't think so, I'm the best archer here, I should be one leading, being a knight is in my blood, unlike others here." Narick replied with a cocky smirk. Oriana just stood there, trying to keep the two from trading blows.
"What does that suppose to mean!?" Lilly just glared at Narick, these two had been butting heads for a long time now, whenever Garland sees them together, a fight or argument was close at hand.
Rolf just stood there, his sword was as tall as he was, even taller maybe, but he had little difficulty wielding the blade. He watched the two bicker with annoyance in his eyes and just stabbed his blade deep into the ground and sat down on the ground and leaned on the large sword.
Garland simply sighed, at least Ori was nice and listened to him. "I hope the other team is just as unprepared as we are."
