The Holding Cell Just beyond the harbor and hidden in the shadow of the Synchographer's Office is the small area known as The Holding Cell. It is rarely lit, and instead its unlucky population sits in darkness. The walls are formed of stone through Reimancy, while the windows are barred with metal. Generally, an invisible protective shield also bars the door, keeping the residents from escaping and visitors from entering. Residents are allowed to look out, but are swiftly reprimanded should they attempt to interact with anyone. Their only interaction is the delivery of food by a Golem of special designation every 7 days. Occasionally Nuits or Pulsers of Sahova will toss the residents food as well, but this is a frowned-upon activity, and can lead to social and political trouble for the sympathizer. Originally formed to hold slaves who were in transit during Fall of 516 AV, the Holding Cell quickly grew to become a place to keep prisoners awaiting trial as well. There are no permanent residents of the Holding Cell, for they are executed or expelled from the island without debate after a strict 60-day deadline. Depending upon the slave, or upon their crime, the execution or deportation may be public or private. Executions are usually held in the Courtyards, and the bodies then left to rot. Lector Qiao forbids the use of these bodies, and they are believed to be unclean. Some become Ghosts to occupy the Courtyard, while others pass on silently.
