Matias “Rook” Jaeger |
Basic Info Race: Human, Mixed (Half Inarta) Gender: Male Age: 26 Birthday: 26, Fall, 486 AV Birthplace: Zeltiva Physical Appearance: Matias is a tall (about 6’ 7”) and well-built man, his body shaped by years of travel across Mizahar as a mercenary. To most casual observers, he looks like a typical Human, the only clues to his Inarta heritage being his deep green eyes and auburn hair. Matias usually keeps his hair cropped close to his scalp, both due to the ease of care when on the road and also for its inherent benefits in combat (It's hard to grab something that isn't there...). He also sports a scruffy beard most of the time, although he has been known to go clean shaven for periods of time. Scars/Wounds: A small, circular scar on left side of his collarbone, from a crossbow bolt that was slowed but not stopped by a breastplate. A roughly 9 1/2" scar running right diagonally below his right shoulder blade, souvenir from a ambush during his travels. Numerous smaller scars on his arms and hands. Inflicted both in combat and from everyday abuse (hiking through wilderness, working with hands, etc.) Character Concept Matias is an adventurer, through and through. He is happiest when on the road or exploring new places. Because of his wanderlust, he found that the life of a travelling mercenary suited him well. Travelling from settlement to settlement, he takes what jobs he can to keep a relatively steady supply of mizas in his pockets. Although he is the consummate professional when necessary, Matias is a relaxed and easy-going man at heart. He does not stress over the little things, and is often optimistic regardless of his circumstances. This aspect of his personality annoys some, but to other folk it can be comforting to hear someone tell them everything will work out for the best. Matias knows this, and often will use it to his advantage to make someone feel more at ease in his company. He generally makes it a point to stay out of quarrels that do not directly involve him, preferring to let the involved parties sort out their own differences in their own ways. However, he will not hesitate to step in either with words, fists, or a blade in order to help someone in obvious danger, physical or otherwise. When asked why he does this, he often jokingly replies that he does it for money, but he’s never taken a single copper miza from someone he’s helped. Despite this propensity for good deeds, often without thought of reward, Matias is extremely slow to give his absolute trust to anyone. He also is hesitant to get close with people, often limiting relationships to amenable professional partnerships. He has plenty of “comrades” and “partners” but few real friends. However, for those few persistent and exceptional individuals who manage to weasel their way into his tight circle of friends, a better ally and companion would be hard to find. Character History Pre-RP Matias was born in Zeltiva, to a Human father and an Inarta mother. His father was a retired mercenary, making a living for his family by working as a guard in the city. His mother was primarily a stay-at-home caretaker. In his early years, Matias had a fairly normal childhood. He played with other children in his neighborhood, explored the alleys of the city, and often caused a bit of lighthearted mischief at the docks. It was during this time that he also learned a bit of Nari from his mother, who insisted that he learn enough to be able to hold a coherent conversation with her. Shortly after his 10th birthday, Matias decided he wanted to learn how to fight, and asked his father to teach him. Initially, his request was denied, but after a few weeks of following his father around and constantly pestering him, the man finally relented. He taught Matias the basics of combat; how to properly grip a sword, combat stances, and a few simple attacks and counterattacks. Of course, Matias had to settle for a wooden sword, but he was happier than he had been in his entire life. Sure, he came away from the practice sessions with a few bumps and bruises, but that was honestly part of the joy. As Matias entered young adulthood, he found work as a laborer on the docks (no small feat, considering how much the harbormaster resented him for his childhood antics) and began to earn his own keep. He enjoyed getting the chance to meet sailors and the occasional captain, fascinated by their tales of the other providences of Mizahar. It could be said that this period sparked the desire for adventure and travel in Matias. Finally, at 17, Matias mustered the courage to act on his wanderlust. He went to his father and laid out his intentions: he was going to enlist as a mercenary. Although he half expected his father to outright forbid him from leaving, Matias was surprised that instead he received his father’s blessing. This blessing even came with a gift, his father’s old bastard sword. Armed with both this weapon and his father’s encouragement, Matias said his final farewells to his mother and friends, and set out with a merchant caravan the next day. Over the next few years, Matias saw much of Mizahar. He trekked through ancient forests, took in the sights of many cities, and met countless new people of nearly every imaginable race. He was especially fond of his time spent on Konti Isle, so much so that he attempted to learn Kontinese in order to better communicate with the islands denizens. However, the subtler nuances of the language escaped him and he has only ever been able to manage a few idioms and simple expressions. In addition to the more cultural aspects of his experiences, he also learned a few more practical skills like surviving in the wild, handling himself in a fistfight and even a bit of tactical planning. He also faced bandits, wild animals, and darker creatures, and these encounters left behind their own memories and marks. And although the brighter periods in his life of travel remain at the forefront of his thoughts and memories, the periods of violence and darkness indisputably changed him as a person. Seeing friends killed by marauders or torn apart by Yukmen has caused Matias to avoid becoming too attached to many people he meets. Being rebuffed or even assaulted for trying to help resolve the problems of others has caused him to take an almost coldly neutral stance to the plight of others. Now, Matias finds himself on the road to Syliras after a successful contract. As he nears the city, little does he know just how much adventure is still in store for him.[/spoiler] Language Fluent Language: Common Basic Language: Nari Poor Language: Kontinese Skills
