Read This First :
This is my job thread and so I have already planned out what is going to happen for each of the births and the animals’ actions. This thread is open to any member of the Stormblood Pavilion who wants to observe, converse, find out how it’s going etc. Be warned there may be relatively graphic descriptions of goat births, so please take that into account before reading something you are uncomfortable with. The rolls on how many kids survive were done by Rufio, their owner, who has also okayed how the births happen.

Working at the Healing Hoof, Jez had had plenty of chances to see veterinary work in action. He didn’t know enough about healing herbs, medical techniques or have enough hands on experience to become a veterinarian just now. However with each season he was becoming more trusted by the elders at his job to take on more complex animal handling work. From simple guiding jobs, to grooming and then minor injuries, Jez was learning new aspects of his job as time went on. Now that Spring was upon them, he had a chance to help with a very important aspect of working with animals in Endrykas; bringing new life into the world. He understood some of the theory about assisting with livestock births, having spoken with Denhar about it and observed other veterinarians at work from a distance.

The day had now come for Jez to put his theoretical knowledge into practise. A few days ago Asher, a member of the Stormblood Pavilion, double Jez’s age, had come to the Healing Hoof to make them aware that help would be needed during the labour of three of their goat does. The owner of the goats, Rufio, had left them in his care while she was out of Endrykas for Spring, and he didn’t want to risk being alone during the births in case something went wrong. As goat births were usually a simple affair and Asher was an experienced animal handler, Denhar had allowed Jez to be the one to go.

Just before midday today Asher had turned up again at the Healing Hoof, with only Denhar around, and asked that assistance be given within a few Bells. Shortly after the man had left Jez had shown up to work, only to be sent in the direction of the Stormblood Pavilion. Atop Wind, his sandy dun Strider, he moved at a brisk trot Southwest. As Jez had met Asher Stormblood a few days prior, he knew who he was looking for, and that the man would be outside with the small goat herd.

“Slow now, Wind,” he spoke, patting the Strider’s neck and straightening his back, shifting the weight in his seat to back his words up via body language so the stallion knew for sure what he was asking for. He could see Asher stood by a small group of goats with a set of supplies by his feet, on the outskirts of a camp of mismatching canvas tents. There were a few other animals lurking around the tents, likely owned by the Pavilion and, like his own Pavilion’s animals, happy to stay close for safety and scraps. The three pregnant goat does were immediately obvious by their ballooned middles, with sunken sides and extended bellies. Their udders were distended and full of milk, ready for kids to suckle on.

“Hello there,” Asher called as Jez pulled Wind up a short distance away so as not to startle the does, “Jez, right? You’re here from the Healing Hoof, to assist with the goats?”

“That’s right,” Jez nodded, dismounting. He turned to his stallion, gently patting his rump, “Don’t wander too far, Wind, and don’t bother the goats.” The stallion showed no indication of having heard his partner but did turn away from the goats, lowering his head to slowly meander away and snuffle through the grass, nibbling occasionally on a particularly green plant.

Asher gestured to the goats as Jez approached, “I hope you’re ready to get your hands dirty. These girls are close to bursting.” Jez looked at the goats, brow furrowed. They were obviously heavily pregnant, true, but he could not see how Asher knew that they would be giving birth today. “How can you tell?” he asked.

“Go to Duh, the more ginger one. She’s friendly and will be okay with a stranger touching her as I tell you to,” Asher instructed, “Put your hand atop her spine at the base of her tail, facing your fingers away from her head. Then press inwards on either side of the spine gently, using fingers and thumb, and you should feel the difference from the normal state of a goat.” Jez slowly approached Duh from the side so she could see him coming, then knelt down and put out his hand to let her smell him, waiting a moment so she knew he meant no harm. He then slid a hand over the doe’s neck and gently moved it down to the base of her tail. Doing as instructed, he pressed in lightly and immediately felt the difference. While goats usually had a firm back either side of their spine, right now he was able to press into the tail base so much that had the skin not been in the way his fingers would touch.

“You feel the sunken area, yes?” Jez nodded to Asher’s question, standing up again, “We call the effect ‘lost ligaments’. They aren’t actually gone but have relaxed in preparation for the birth. It’s a sign that she will give birth within twelve Bells. Do you know how to tell that they are about to go into labour?” Jez frowned as he thought for a moment before it came to him.

“The…mucous plug…right?” he recalled Denhar and Balen talking about it a little while ago, “The plug appears and the vulva gets swollen and drops lower. I’ve heard about it but never seen it.” Asher chuckled and walked over, lifting Duh’s tail. “Ah! Looks like it’s almost time, see?” Jez looked and saw the thin trail of solid white mucous partly emerged from the doe’s vagina. The two Drykas backed away a few paces and sat in the grass to observe as Duh went into labour, ready to intervene if there was a problem.

As the Drykas watched they saw Duh begin to pace restlessly a little away from the rest of the goats. She lay down heavily and stayed still for a few Chimes, then heaved herself back up to resume pacing. Soon she stopped and turned her head to lick at her side, bleating. Another goat, this one not pregnant, wandered over full of curiosity. Duh moved her head to lick at the other goat when it grew close enough, before suddenly pushing her head against the other’s side. It skittishly jumped away, and Duh once more resumed her pacing. The ginger doe paused only to paw at the ground a few times, letting out the occasional bleat.

Soon enough Jez noticed the doe’s sides beginning to clench, the muscles tightening as she began to push through labour contractions. Jez remembered learning that goats were able to give birth both stood up and laid down, and that it all depended on what the specific doe chose to do. Duh had chosen to stand. Asher hummed, leaning forward to watch. “We should watch closely now,” he told the younger man, “If you see any problems, or she pushes for more than half a Bell without result, then we’ll have to intervene.” Jez nodded and shifted to bring his legs up, leaning his arms on his knees. A few Chimes into the contractions the discharge coming from Duh began to thicken, a tinge of red to it. Jez knew it was normal for there to be a small amount of blood at this stage, and assumed that Asher would get involved if it became too much.

Within the half a Bell limit that Asher had set, the thin trail of discharge widened out into a bubble-like shape at the vaginal opening. “That’s the membrane,” Asher commented before Jez could ask, aware that this was the first time the younger man had helped hands-on with a goat birth. Jez recalled that the membrane encased the kid, and so the labour was well on the way to being complete. The membrane was a semi-transparent casing of mixed reds and whites. Within there were two little white patches visible, pushed far enough out of the doe to see, and Jez, knowing they were hooves, watched in awe.

Asher spoke up again as the contractions pushed the membrane bubble further out, “The kid is coming out the right way. You can just about see the nose now, between the hooves, right? It looks like this will go pretty smoothly.” As he spoke Duh started to circle, attempting to reach around and lick at the kid. Unable to reach that far, she licked her own side a couple of times before scratching at the ground. She circled once more before stopping and pushing with the contractions again.

As the kid’s head was pushed completely out, the membrane casing broke and, suddenly with a last push, the kid slid out of its mother. There were a few tense moments of stillness before the kid started to thrash, attempting to move from laying on its side to its stomach. As Duh started licking at the membrane still covering the kid, Asher stood, “We need to check the kid is okay now.” Jez nodded and also stood. The birth looked simple enough and the mother was acting well, but it wouldn’t do to have the kid die because they were complacent; better safe than sorry.

The two knelt beside Duh, who turned to lick at their legs, instinct telling her to lick but not limiting her to just the newborn. “Although all our pregnant does are friendly, Duh’s the friendliest,” Asher patted her shoulder and turned his words to the doe, “You’re a good girl, well done.” The older Drykas handed a cotton towel to Jez, who knew to use it to clean the remaining fluid off the kid. If left to instinct it looked as though Duh would eventually have gotten the fluid off, but there was still a risk of the kid choking on it so it was better for the men to intervene at this stage.

Jez placed the towel on the ground and gently picked the kid up to place on one side of it, folding the rest of the fabric over the newborn. While Asher checked on Duh’s health, Jez carefully rubbed as much of the fluid off the kid as he could. He began around its mouth and nose, pausing to let it cough up a little fluid, then resuming when its breathing returned to normal. He wiped off the rest of the body and picked it up to rub at the other side, before turning to Asher, “IIt’s a female. Her breathing is fine and she’s healthy to look at.”

“Great,” Asher grinned, “A female means more possible milk and kids in the future. The mother is healthy too, and has passed the placenta. It usually passes within a Bell but if it had taken more than half a day it would need to be removed manually. You can put the kid down by Duh now.” Jez did so and the doe immediately started licking at her, instinct pressing her to fully clean the kid and form a bond with it. The two men backed away to leave them to their instincts, sitting back where they had earlier.

“We need to keep an eye on them,” Asher told Jez, “Just to make sure the kid will latch and Duh will stay still long enough for it to feed. So far she’s doing everything right though, so I doubt there will be a problem.” They watched for a few Chimes longer before Jez noticed the brown and white female had started pushing, also stood up. He signed to Asher, who looked and nodded. “Kuh is the youngest,” he told Jez, “If there are any problems I expect they will be because of her. Keep a keen eye.”

With the start of Kuh’s labour progressing normally, Jez assumed everything was going to be okay as with Duh’s. However, Asher suddenly leant forward with narrowed eyes, “I think…something might be wrong. We should get a closer look.” Confused about what might be wrong, Jez got up to walk with the older man to the doe. They knelt beside her and Asher took a moment to confirm his suspicions, before pointing out the issue to Jez. “Can you see here? The head is coming out normally but the legs aren’t.”

Jez signed to confirm he could see as he looked at the membrane covered head. This kid’s head was much further out of its mother than the previous kid’s head when its hooves had appeared. He hadn’t spotted the issue until Asher mentioned it, but he had learnt about it from others at the Healing Hoof. The front legs were folded back within Kuh and she probably wouldn’t be able to complete the labour, at least not without assistance.

“Take this knife,” Asher handed it to Jez, “Kuh needs to be kept calm while we assist with the birth. I’ll calm her since she knows me and it’ll be easier, but I’ll talk you through dealing with the kid.” Jez was nervous and doing something wrong and injuring either the kid or mother, but he understood Asher’s logic for not doing it himself. Besides, there was a first time for everything. He’d learn from today and know what to do should this situation arise again in the future.

“Okay, first you need to burst the membrane with the knife,” Asher told him as he moved to kneel beside Kuh’s head to calm her and hold her steady if necessary. Jez took a moment to decide where best to insert the knife without harming the kid, then lined it up below the membrane and quickly lifted to slice cleanly. “Now I pull its head to get it out, right?” Jez asked Asher, not wanting to do so without confirmation from the more experienced man. “That’s right,” Asher nodded, running a hand down Kuh’s neck, “Don’t be too rough though; you don’t want to harm the kid or Kuh.”

Jez put down the knife, freeing both hands to move the membrane aside and firmly grasp the head and neck of the kid. He tugged gently a couple of times but was unsuccessful. “Asher, it isn’t working. I think you might need to give it a try.” Asher moved to join Jez and tried to tug at the kid himself. However, he also had no luck and had to give up with a sigh. He signed wait and went back to his supplies, grabbed a loop of wire, then knelt beside Jez once again. Asher put the wire down and, with Jez watching on closely, he gently started to push the kid’s head back in. He was doing it to make room for one of them to unfold the front legs and get them out. As he worked Kuh began to fuss and then gave a pained bleat, forcing Asher to stop and lean back.

“I hope you’ve got a steady hand Jez,” Asher handed him the wire loop, “Try to get this around the kid’s hooves and pull them out. You’ll need to cup a hand around them at the same time or their edges might tear Kuh’s uterus.” Jez carefully did as told, inserting the wire loop at a downwards angle to glide it along the internal vaginal wall until it was beyond where the kid’s hooves curled up against its body.

Jez twisted his hand a little to hook the wire loop over the kid’s hooves, then pulled slightly to tighten the loop. He then pulled gently on the end of the wire with one hand, using his other hand to protect Kuh from the hooves. After a little manoeuvring, he managed to unfold the kid’s legs and pull out the hooves. With a triumphant laugh, he unhooked the wire loop from the exposed hooves, throwing it aside. While Jez gently pulled on the legs, Asher reached over to guide the head out. From there it was simple enough for them to gently pull the rest of the kid out of its mother.

They released the kid on the grass and waited for a few moment, frowning when it didn’t start to move. Kuh walked a few steps away from the men to lick at her side again, seemingly not noticing the kid she’d just birthed. Jez picked the kid up and rubbed it gently with the towel to clean its airways, trying to stimulate its breathing, but it continued to give no reaction as it lay floppy in his hands. “Rub it harder with the towel,” Asher told him, looking on with concern, “Keep trying to stimulate its breathing.” After Jez did as told with nothing changing for a few moments, Asher took the kid from him to try something else.

The more experienced Drykas held the kid by its hooves and begun to swing it. “This happens something. They come out and don’t start breathing right away,” he told Jez as he moved his arms, “If rubbing it with a towel doesn’t work then this usually does.” After swinging it for a little bit he stopped to check its breathing again. He shook his head, letting Jez know that it still wasn’t breathing. He was about to start again when he noticed Kuh pushing through further contractions.

“Jez, can you keep rubbing it with the towel?” Asher handed the kid back, “Kuh’s about to give birth again. I want to watch closely for the second kid since there was already an issue with this one.” Another issue was more likely after the mother had been through one problematic labour, especially since this kid had been inside Kuh at the same time as the one that had already been born. If there was an issue then Asher needed to be there to try and prevent any further complications. Jez continued to rub the body of the kid he held while Asher dealt with Kuh, slowly growing more frustrated with himself and desperate for the kid the longer it went without breathing.

“Asher, this kid’s still not breathing,” Jez called after a while, when he thought it had been too long for the kid to last without breath. Asher left Kuh’s side to check the kid over again, before sighing and putting its body down. “This long without breathing and it’s not going to survive. We should leave it and move on to the next one.” Asher stood up and looked back to Jez, reading how upset he was that the newborn hadn’t survived. “Remember Jez, the weak dying makes the herd strong. It’s sad but overall will be better for us and the goats.”

Jez understood what he was talking about. The same principle governed wild herds. Predators and disease targeted the weak herd members, leaving the strong to grow up and have their own strong offspring. The result was a stronger herd, providing a better prey source for the predators and the Drykas, as well as increasing the chance of the herd surviving in the future. However, understanding and witnessing the death of such a young creature were two entirely different things, and Jez couldn’t help his sadness as he looked at the kid’s body.

“Aha!” Asher’s exclamation brought Jez from his thoughts, “You see? It’s not all tragedy! The second kid came out just fine. Leave that one there and come have a look. I’ll deal with it later.” Jez looked over to where Asher was holding a newborn, white kid, a smile taking over his face. It was smaller than its older sibling, but had come out alive and well. It trembled as Asher lay it in the grass, all its efforts going into keeping its head raised as it tried to figure out what was happening. Jez placed the towel over its dead sibling, an act of respect and attempt to keep the mother from bonding with it, mentally wishing it safe passage to its next life. He then moved over to Asher to get a closer look at the white kid.

Kuh turned and started to lick at the kid beside her. “Some people say that a mother instinctually knows which of her young has the best chance of survival,” Asher commented as he got up to stand beside Jez, “Perhaps that is why she ignored her first one but is immediately bonding with this one. Come, let’s leave them to each other for now.” The two returned to where they had previously sat, waiting for the next labour to begin.

As they sat there Jez looked back to Duh, grinning and signing to Asher to look over to her as well. Her kid had gotten up onto wobbly legs and started to suckle. Despite the sadness of losing one of the kids, Jez was pleased that the remaining two were doing well. “The black doe is the only one left to give birth, right?” Jez asked. Asher nodded, looking to where she lay a little further away from them than the other new mothers. “You’re right. That’s Ah, the lead doe of the herd. We should probably get a little closer; we’re a bit too far away to see if anything goes wrong.”
