Appearance
Sorla is slightly taller than the average Inarta woman at 5’ 4”. Her mother is half Chaktawe, and Sorla has inherited her bronze skin tone, but otherwise she is pure Inarta, with flame-red hair and bright green eyes. She has a glass ring in her nose and several others in each ear. She has a dark green ribbon woven into one of the loose plaits that keep her hair off her face. A tiny blown glass bird dangles from the end of the ribbon. She will normally be seen with her crow, Rikar, flying around above her head or perched on her shoulder.
Character Concept
Sorla is determined, impulsive and arrogant, but also fiercely loyal and nurturing. She is more family oriented than many of her race, and has a close relationship with her parents and sister. She is not overly ambitious for power or money, and deep down all she wants is to live peacefully, master her trade and have a family of her own. Although she has the wit and determination to make her own way if she is forced to, at heart she is a social creature who dislikes solitude. Ironically, given her caring instincts, she tends to neglect herself. She often forgets to eat, especially when stressed. From her Chaktawe grandfather she has inherited a restlessness that sits uneasily with her desire to be included and her love of home, as well as a reverence for the Chaktawes' crow god Eywaat. She also actively worships Priskil, goddess of light and hope.
Character History
She was born to Avora parents. Her father is a tailor, and she has been learning his trade. Her mother is a glassblower. Like all Inarta, she and her twin sister were assigned to castes at the age of fifteen, after spending the last seven years in the communal nursery. As the child of Avora parents who had already shown an aptitude for her father’s trade, Sorla was assigned to the commoner Chiet for as long as it took her to complete her apprenticeship. Her twin sister Torva, who had failed to show an aptitude for anything, was assigned to the Dek, the drudge cast. Sorla’s protective instincts kicked in, and she did all she could to help her unfortunate sister, but she only managed to make things worse.
One day she came across Torva being assaulted by a high-class eagle rider, and in a moment of rage she attacked the man and refused to let him touch her sister. Unfortunately, as an eagle rider he was perfectly within his rights to force the drudge Torva to do whatever he wanted, and as a commoner it was a crime for Sorla to attack him. The punishment was severe, on both girls. Although she had done nothing, Torva was assigned to be her attacker's personal slave; a position sure to bring her nothing but misery and pain. Sorla was condemned as an outcast who refused to live within the rules of the city, and banished from the place and the people she loved. She must now wander the world and try to find a way to soothe her troubled conscience. She prays every day to Priskil that her sister will still be alive when she goes back to Wind Reach to rescue her, as she plans to do.
She is currently in Alvadas, having travelled there with the first trading caravan to leave Wind Reach after she was banished. Her mother was able to give her some money before she left, and she took her crow, Rikar, with her. Otherwise her only possessions are the clothes she was wearing when she left and a backpack containing basic necessities.
Like any Inarta youngster she can use a bow and understands the rudiments of falconry. She also recently discovered that she quite enjoys sticking sharp things into people... artistically. Before leaving Wind Reach she had been managed to build up a bit of a reputation among Inarta who wanted something pierced, which of course was almost all of them.
