While Leto continued to explain things, Sama'el elaborated on his little circle of glyphs, trying to intuit where connecting lines should flow, and if this glyph shouldn't look a little more like... there, that was better. It was not quite like reading, which was good because he was functionally illiterate. He glanced up from time to time, making eye contact with Leto and nodding that he understood. He did understand, too, up to a point. A deeper understanding would take time and practice, of course.

"My cousin is supposed to initiate me soon," he said, nodding. "Perhaps I could help you with something until then? I don't know... you're the teacher." He smiled. He had been raised -- in the short time he had a proper raising -- to respect his teachers; after all, he was trying to learn from them, and so following their wisdom seemed the best path to follow until he got to the level of mastery where he had to make his own choices for good or for ill.

"Though I should introduce you to Eldon... You might need him on hand to help you deal with anything you summon that gets out of hand."

Sama'el had a rather high opinion of Eldon, much to his cousin's embarrassed consternation.

Leto smiled as Sama'el elaborated upon his glyph a bit more. Watching him carefully, and not saying much as he worked upon it, he allowed his obsidian gaze to watch over Sama'el and continue thinking about things. As he spoke of his cousin, Leto smiled, and said, "I should very well like to meet him someday, given how you speak of him. He sounds like a decent young man..." As he spoke, he cracked a grin, and tilted his head to the side a bit. As for his teaching, he allowed his mouth to continue the smile, and then looked down towards the glyph that Sama'el had created.

"It is decent for a beginner, how about we try to create some glyphs on Parchment though, and don't worry about it being a waste even if the glyphs aren't used. Practice makes perfect, and drawing on the ground just doesn't seem to have the same effect as drawing on a piece of parchment, which most glyphs are used on..." he said, as he watched Sama'el, and then allowed Arias to nuzzle his shoulder a bit, looking towards him. "We can return to my pavillion if you have no qualms with that, and work more upon the glyphs that you have started... but first, erase the glyph you have worked on... not that i want you to destroy your work, just so that nobody accidentally messes around with it..." he said. Even though it didn't have any magic stored within it, the glyph could still pose a threat to an unsuspecting person, given magic was considered a dangerous art, even to a skilled glypher.

Leto didn't want to be responsible for anything happening while teaching someone something new, so he figured the best thing to do in this instance would be to erase the glyph. "Even though it has no magic stored in it, one can never be too careful with creating glyphs. All magic is dangerous and can have effects on people's bodies i've learned. Even glyphing. Although, i'd say it's probably one of the least dangerous arts of magic around nowadays, given it really is used to augment or store other forms of magic..." he said with a smile as he awaited Sama'el's response to his instructions and query...

Sama'el was entirely too easy to win over if one chose to speak well of his family, though those that remained were of a distaff branch, not the pavilion with which he had grown to dubious manhood at seven years of age when Hasieran had chosen him. He nodded enthusiastically, hoping that Leto and Eldon would have a fruitful friendship seeing as they were both obviously talented in the Mysteries.

Unsure whether there was any danger in it, he wiped away all traces of his inexpert glyphs. This was Leto's bailiwick and so he would take his word for it, hoping that this learning would add to his abilities to Web.

"I don't mind riding back to draw on parchment if you don't think that's a waste of your parchment." He grinned again. Being functionally illiterate, he couldn't really gauge the worth of paper and ink, though the glyphs looked pretty enough to him. Perhaps they would look nice on rice paper as decorations to hang from a pavilion wall someday... Ah, someday.

"No, it would not be a waste," he said with a smile as he looked towards the younger man. He looked as though he was nearly ten years younger than Leto, but he couldn't help but not resist the young man's charm. There was just somethng about him that Leto couldn't quite put his finger on, something good within him. But it drew Leto towards him even more, and he was truly enjoying spending time with the man before him. As his obsidian gaze turned towards Arias, he erased his own summoning circle that he had created in an effort to teach Sam more about glyphing.

Looking back towards Sama'el, he smiled, and placed his hands gently upon Arias' back. Pushing himself upwards very carefully, he swung his leg over Arias' back and mounted him gently so as to not scare the horse, even though he had bonded with it quite some time ago, for some reason it could be a bit skiddish around anyone, less so around Leto though. Looking towards Sama'el again as Leto patted Arias' neck a bit, Leto turned his head to look back towards Endrykas, then allowed his gaze to flow back to Sama'el.

"Well, shall we be going then?" he asked, and if Sama'el was complient to, Leto would ride alongside him back towards Endrykas, as well as his pavillion. Upon arrival there, so long as no mishaps happened, Leto would carefully dismount Arias, and allow him to head over towards a water filled trough, to satiate his thirst at the moment. Flipping up the flap to one of the tents in his pavillion, Leto would wave a hand to Sam, beckoning him into the tent. Within it, he would see a bedroll laying upon the ground, a table with some parchment and ink upon it, and some rolled up scrolls within the corner.

Moving over towards the table in the small tent, Leto turned towards Sama'el, and said, "I hope you're not too uncomfortable in closed quarters," he said, pulling the tent flap down beside them, so that they didn't feel the cool winter's breeze. Because Leto had only been wearing a leather vest and leather pants plus undergarments, as well as his leather shoes, he had felt the chill of the winter's nip upon his arms, and upper chest. But it was warming within the tent, while there were more than one body within it. Turning his obsidian gaze towards Sama'el as he motioned towards the parchment, ink, and quill with his hand, he smiled, and said, Do you know how to use a quill?"

He didn't want to be too hastey with asking if Sama'el was aware of how to use writing utensils, but then again, not many in Endrykas other than glypher's really seemed to be literate to a degree where they knew how to write, and use things like quills, ink, and parchment. Leto didn't want to assume anything, so he was careful with his question, and followed it by asking, "It's fine if you don't, I can show you how if you don't... But if you do, that's all the better!" Reaching his hand up a bit, he unbuttoned the buttons upon his leather vest, and allowed it to open up fully revealing his center tattoe, a Triangle with a line through the lower center of it, as well as more scars across his chest and stomach.

Motioning towards the parchment, he went over and stood next to the table with a smile, and awaited an answer from Sama'el as to if he knew how to use a quill or not. If he didn't, Leto would give him instruction in it, but if he did, they could just delve into more practice glyphing...

As they rode back to Endrykas, Sama'el's main talent became apparent; as their gaits rose from walk up to gallop, the Sapphire clansman and his golden mare moved as one creature, as fleet as a gust of Zulrav's wind. He didn't give Dohaina her head, though, but kept pace with Leto, letting him lead them to his tent. As soon as they arrived, he vaulted off Dohaina's back. It was a bit of showing off, but perhaps he wanted unconsciously for the talented summoner to know that he was not incapable of things. When he landed, he tucked into a roll over his shoulder and let his momentum carry him back up to his feet, skidding a bit against the turf to stop himself. The wind from the ride had chapped his cheeks a bit, and he flushed at his bit of ostentation.

Dohaina snorted. Sama'el quickly stripped off her yvas and laid it aside, giving her a quick rub down so she wouldn't be uncomfortable while they worked.

"The tent is warm," he said, "so the close quarters are to be welcomed." With a grin, he sat where Leto bade him, then tried to hide his discomfiture when asked about the quill. Shaking his head, he offered, "There was never any need to learn. You don't have to teach me if it's a great effort. I can survive without it."

As Leto allowed Sama'el to take a seat next to him, he smiled and stood next to him. Taking the quill up in his hand, he looked towards Sama'el, and then said, "It is of no great effort... knowledge is something that should never be turned away in my experiences... I strive to learn as much as I can, even though i haven't much contact with the outside world, just within my own pavillion..." As he spoke, his dark gaze looked towards Sama'el, and he smiled. "Using a quill is quite easy actually once you get the hang of it. When using it, you don't want to use too much pressure on the paper, otherwise you risk ripping the paper. It's best to start out practicing with a quill for glyphing by drawing circles upon your hand. When you can draw little indentations in the back of your hand without cutting or injuring yourself, then you're using the right amount of pressure," he said, and then demonstrated it to Sama'el using the quill upon his own hand, and showing him how to hold it while drawing a circle upon his own hand. He then handed it to Sama'el so that he could try it out for himself.

"Here, try it out for yourself... one never learns unless they practice," he said cheerfully, and then allowed Sama'el to try drawing little circles upon his hand, not with too much pressure, but with just enough to make indentations. "It takes a little bit to get used to it, so once you feel you have enough lightness in using a quill, the next part is the ink. Basically you just dip it in about a half an inch, and then allow the quill to suck the ink up into it. As you draw glyphs with it, the ink will flow out of the quill when it touches the paper. Remember the lightness you used when drawing circles on your hand, and attempt to use it upon this sheet of paper," he instructed, and then took out a sheet of paper he had purchased recently, and put it infront of Sama'el to try drawing the glyphs upon the paper.

"Remember, glyphs that you draw can be your own, most are learned from a teacher, but then given their own twist so that you know the meaning of them. First the drawing of the focus, then the trigger, and finally, if you need it, a barrier. Should I explain them again, so they are fresh in your mind before you start?" he asked gently, as he watched Sama'el carefully a calm demeaner about him, so that the older man could try and teach Sama'el and be patient with him, as he was just learning how to glyph for the first time...

Sama'el fell into the mode of the mentee, listening quietly to his mentor of the moment, nodding his understanding and waiting to see how it all turned out before he asked any questions. When the quill was passed over to him, he peered at the tip, which appeared to have been whittled down to a fine point, which determined the thickness of the lines of script, he supposed. He tested it against his skin. It was sharp, but somewhat delicate, and he was careful not to hurt himself or the quill. First he drew the circles on the back of his hand, then whorls, and then he even sketched the seed-glyph upon his left wrist that was his first windmark, the sign of his bonding with dead Hasieran, may Zulrav blow his soul to green pastures.

Then, he carefully dipped the quill into the ink, careful not to spill a drop for he had no idea how much ink cost. He would have to ask Dymphna about that, see what inks were made by the Endrykas and which had to be imported from abroad. Such imports might make a good gift to one such as Leto, should they become friends.

"You could explain them again," he said dubiously, "but then I think you should show me how you craft your origin glyphs, because I understand Webbing better than I understand anything else. Not that I understand it well, but better." He grinned something lopsided, self-deprecating. "It's just, I think I'll understand that better in the beginning. If you want to teach me more later, I'll have that foundation, you know?"

Teaching how to craft his origin runes? That sounded like a fine idea to Leto. "I could indeed show you how i've done my origin runes," he said with a smile upon his face. Brushing a hand through his short black with blonde spiked hair, he looked towards Sam, and then put his finger upon the parchment. "You'll have to concentrate to see the webbing that i create, i assume... i'm merely a novice at it as well, and haven't had much practice, but I am sure I could create an origin rune upon the paper, and you could see how I weave it? Then you could work on your own runes, in working to create a sigil out of them?" he said.

"Ah yes, and before I start, a sigil is made up of a focus, trigger, and sometimes a barrier... the focus is where the magic is stored. The trigger is how you release the magic... and a barrier helps to hold the magic within the scroll," he said smiling as he spoke, and then starting to move into a trance like state to work with his djed to create an Origin Rune. Before he slipped into it all of the way, he said, "I'll create the origin rune on the paper for now, so you can see it easier perhaps..." And then on a corner of the paper, as he slipped into the trance-like state, he began to reach out with his djed, and started to draw a rune upon the upper corner of the paper. As he drew it, it started off looking like an x, but at each end of the lines, he drew another cross over them. He continued to spin his djed into the weave he was creating, until the origin rune was finished, and then he ceased his actions, his body tingling, and his mind growing a bit numb.

As he pulled out of the meditative state, he took a step back, and placed a hand upon the table leaning over to catch himself, as his knees felt weak from the use of his djed to create the origin rune. "My apologies, I haven't worked with djed for weaving an actual origin rune in quite some time, but if you look at it, that's an example of one that one could use to anchor their own webbing to..." he said, a smile recrossing his face as he did, attempting to work through the faint feeling he was feeling.

"I think it would be possible to weave an origin rune into the actual paper if one were to let their djed flow through the quill while writing upon it... perhaps... it would be something interesting to see if it would actually work, but not to abuse it..." he said thoughtfully, hoping that his experimental nature wouldn't be to abrupt for Sama'el to handle, given one wasn't supposed to experiment with the web, but use it as a tool, and hold it sacred to the Drykas, at least that's what Leto generally thought of it. But he didn't mind practicing and experimenting with it every so often...

OOCHope that origin rune description was decent enough. I'm still in the process of learning and reading how to describe it

Two Spiders on One Web [Leto]

Postby Sama'el Sunsinger on May 13th, 2011, 9:46 pm

Sama'el watched, wide-eyed, trying to take in this lesson. Daed hadn't gone over origin runes with him and Petya kept putting it off, saying Sama'el needed to learn to maneuver on the Web before he attempted to create too much with it. All the same, he was glad to have this demonstration, and even if he couldn't create an origin on his own, he would be ahead of the game when Petya showed him how it was done, and then he would be all the quicker to master it.

"Isn't paper too fragile for an origin?" he asked. "I mean, for a real one. Unless, I suppose, you buried it under a cairn, and you could somehow guard against rain and other things." He had thought this merely a demonstration, but Leto was speaking of experiments which were far beyond his ken. "I don't know, really. You are more expert than me. But I will help if you decide to experiment."

Once he had the quill and his bit of paper again, he attempted the glyphs, though he worked no true magic into it. This was practice for him, and he made many mistakes, until after a few minutes he had something that certainly wouldn't work, but showed how he was starting to pick up some of the ideas Leto had shared.

Leto nodded as Sama'el spoke of the origin being way to fragile on paper. "Yes, I suppose it would be now that you mention it," he then said, smiling nonetheless. Watching Sama'el draw his runes and glyphs upon the paper, he nodded. "You are right indeed, i'm merely a beginner at webbing as well, and hadn't thought about that. But i did learn how to craft an origin rune, one of the few things that was taught to me..." As Sama'els runes came to a completion, he smiled, and then said, "So... Now that you have some glyphs, what would be your focus and trigger?" he then asked, as he looked towards the glyphs upon the paper.

He felt a bit embarrassed about asking the question, but in order to teach Sama'el more about glyphing, the man would need to learn what a proper focus and trigger were, given the fact that they were the two main parts of a sigil. As well as the barrier, but they could go over that later. Then Leto thought of an idea. Why not create a focus glyph that could be used to channel their djed better to craft the web, making origins and the like? "I have a thought Sam..." he started. "If you're up to it, why not craft a focus upon the palm of your hand, to help channel your djed for spinning webs? Not a permanent one, just a temporary one that can be washed off later..."

He wasn't sure if Sama'el would be up for it, but then again perhaps it would help in Sama'el's webbing considering one needed to use their djed to enter the web, perhaps it would help him focus upon the webs to gain a better feel for them and understanding of them. "I know magic is not something to be trifled with, but when I was a beginner at glyphing and creating glyphs, we often drew focuses on the palms of our hands to help us focus our djed to enter the webs, or craft an origin rune..." he said, as he looked towards Sama'el being entirely honest with him...
