Summer 70, 517 AV

A groaning filled the small rented apartment, as Karyk's eyes slow crawled open. The shipwright cast his eyes to the window next to his bed, seeing that it was still dark, but clear that Syna was about to rise up over the forest. He reached down, and found the tiny lumps beneath the blankets, two on his left, one on his right. Hand reaching out, he rubbed each of his new children's heads in turn, whispering, "Time to wake up lovebugs."

Sharay as usual swatted at him and growled, rolling over away from him. All of the Southwind women were the same. Fiery tempers and certainly not morning risers. Southwind men on the other hand... That was quickly answered as the twins were scrambling over Karyk and kneeling on his chest, tiny fists pounding on his chest, the air filled with giggles.

"Oh ya think ya got me eh?" he said laughing, before slipping a hand under each twins torso's and pushing them skyward. They squealed, flailing about as Karyk held them there. "Again!" Karyk happily obliged, lowering them down to his chest again, before pushing them upward again. He continued to push them up and down as they pretended they were flying giggling all the while, until Sharay growled loudly and flung the blanket from her, and slid out of bed. Karyk tossed the twins down onto the bed, and slid out as well. Sharay grabbed the chamber pot, and carried it to the end of the bed to relieve herself in some privacy.

Karyk had an idea forming, knowing the twins had been cooped up, as well as wanting to spend good, quality time with his new kids, and his apprentice. He knew he had a few days off work, as his crew was only just beginning a new project, and were ahead of schedule. "Wha' do y'all wan' for breffes'?

The twins looked at each other, and without saying anything aside from shared giggles, "Frog legs."

Karyk cast them an incredulous look, but Sharay spoke first, "Don' be dumb. Tha's for lunch."

Sharay went over to their table where most of their foodstuffs sat, and grabbed a bag of oats. "Porridge. Make i' like mum did. Boil with sal' an' milk, add 'oney after." The bag of oats was thrown dramatically on the end of the table. Karyk snorted, smirking at the young woman, "Yes ma'am."

Karyk slipped out of bed and stretched wide, in his small clothes, rotating his back to get out the tight knots from the previous day's work. Moving to the end of the bed, watching the twins wrestle, Karyk relieved himself into the chamber pot, "Sharay, wash up an' wash your brothers. We're 'eadin' out for a few days." Sharay gave her usual morning growl and got the the bathtub ready.

Moving over to the door, Karyk opened it up, reached down, and grabbed the bottle of milk and the small basket of cleaned laundry that sat there. He carried them back in, put down the basket, and poured the milk into his cooking pot. Karyk overturned the bag of oats into it, and reached into his cooking kit and grabbed a pinch of salt, tossing that in too. He then set it on the rack in the hearth, and waited for it to boil.

"Where we goin'?"

Karyk grabbed some bowls and spoons and set them out on the table, and a wooden spoon as well. "Lakeshore, we're gonna go campin'. Y'all need to learn some thin's. An' we gotta get y'all outta this room."

Sharay smiled at this, while also ignoring the wrestling twins. Karyk moved back to the hearth and saw it was now boiling. He began to stir, ensuring to scrape the bottom of the pot, so that it didn't stick. It thickened as it boiled, and Karyk kept at it. Suddenly, Sharay was at his side, her wet hair on his shoulder. "Ya overcooked it. Get it off now."

Karyk pulled it from the fire using a sock as heat protection. He set the pot on the table, when Sharay pushed him out of the way, "Ya big dolt. Gotta pour it before it sets." She quickly divvied out the food into the bowls. Karyk pulled some honey and dried fruit from his cooking kit and added them to the bowls. He and Sharay sat at the table while the twins played in their bath.

The porridge was a bit too thick, a little too done, but it still was a nice breakfast. Then Sharay spoke and Karyk nearly choked on his food, "Are ya and miss Shiress boyfrien' and girlfrien' now?"

Having recovered, Karyk chuckled, "Nah lovebug, she was jus' 'elpin' me out."

Sharay nodded, "Tha's good. After all, ya gonna end up with Salara."

The twins quietly joined them, having dressed, "She's in Riverfall, we're 'ere. It ain't gonna happen." Unless we meet again at our pond in a year.

Sharay glared at him, "I ain't wrong. Woman's intoo... inta... intootuition."

"If ya say so lovebug." I hope so.

Once breakfast, Karyk and the kids packed up their gear, "We gotta go buy some thin's before we get outta town. Y'all ready?"

Sharay nodded and the twins giggled, and started punching each other in the arms. And with a grin on his face, Karyk and his family left the small apartment.

Too Much Time in the City (Part 1)

Postby Karyk on June 29th, 2017, 12:50 pm

Karyk smiled as he watched the three fiery haired children walking ahead of them toward the docks on the edge of the city. They each had a brand new backpack, filled with spare clothes, and each carried a fishing pole over their shoulders, bouncing along the way, excited about their new stuff. Sharay had even gotten herself a floppy wide brimmed hat to sit atop her curls. Karyk was lugging his own bulging pack, with his axe bundle tied underneath, a couple of toolkits held against hip, and his own fishing pole and rolled up tent over the opposite shoulder.

Upon reaching the docks, the children began pointing at the many ships, smaller than what they knew from Zeltiva. Karyk saw a flat bottomed ship with two masts and rectangular sails. Dockworkers were busy unloading many crates and barrels from it, and etched into the hull were the words The Dullisk Cove. "Lovebug, wha' kin' of ship is tha'?"

Karyk figured she would know this one, it was an easy one and a common sight back in Zeltiva. She thought for a moment, "Tha's a barge cuz it has a flat butt!"

Karyk laughed, "Good good, an' tha' one?" This time he gestured to a smaller single masted ship with a deep hull. "Tha's a easy one. Fishin' boat. Short and fat."

They continued walking along until they found another ship, with a man standing at the gangplank, "You all look like my kind of people. Looking for a ride to shore? One gold a head. Got plenty of room and should only take three bells or so."

Karyk nodded at the man, "Soun's good," then looking down at Sharay, "An' wha's this'un?"

She looked a bit stumped. It had four masts, and a mix of square and lateen sails. It had a longer body, but was clearly built for cargo and speed. "A cromster?"

Karyk smiled, "Almos' but not quite. This be its little brother, the saique. Good for lakes an' coasts, cuz its fast. But it ain't stron' enough to survive open ocean for lon'."

Karyk paid the man, and led the kids up the gangplank. There were a few others mulling about on the ship. The shipwright assumed that the ship had delivered cargo the day before and was heading back to Lakeshore to get more. So traveler cargo helped keep costs down. Karyk led them to the stern, finding several crates to sit upon. He set down all their equipment, grateful to not be lugging that around.

"C'mere boys."

The twins eagerly dashed over. Karyk picked each of them up by the shirts and plopped them atop a crate. "Y'all gonna learn 'ow to cast. I don't wantchya fightin' or 'ittin' each other while doin' this, ya got it?" Both boys bobbed their heads in confirmation. Karyk dug out his fishing kit and attached sinkers to the boys poles, but no hooks. "Me an' Sharay will be fishin' over 'ere, you two practice throwin' the line an' reelin' it in, okay? If ya need 'elp, jus' 'oller."

The boys smiled, and immediately began trying to cast. The first few didn't leave the ship, but it didn't take long for the first plops to be heard in the water. Sharay had already climbed up on a crate, and was prepping her line from Karyk's kit. The ship's sails were unfurled, and the whole vessel lurched as she began moving forward.

Karyk grabbed a worm from his bait bucket, and threaded it along the hook. Sharay was about to cast, "Wait lovebug. Ya need some weights on there. We're movin', so if ya don't 'ave weights, your 'ook will just be in the ship's wake." Karyk took her rig in his hands and showed her. He slipped on a heavier weight, and tied a knot above and below it. Then he quickly untied it and let her give it a go. Her small nimble fingers made quick work of it.

"Three, two, one, go!"

Karyk and Sharay both cast their lines over the rail of the ship as Ravok slowly grew smaller, Syna now beginning to rise. "It's gonna be 'arder to tell by the bounce of the line if ya got a bite cuz we're movin'. Ya gotta watch the tip of your pole. See 'ow it is only a little bit bent righ' now? If it bends more, ya migh' 'ave a bite. Ya don't really gotta worry 'bout settin' the 'ook either, us movin' will do tha' for ya."

Karyk leaned back, pole in one hand, rubbing Sharay atop her hat. He cast his eyes over at the twins, who were busy racing to see who could reel in their line the fastest. And for the first time since they arrived in Ravok, Karyk truly felt that this small, new, slightly damaged family would get through this. He really needed to thank Shiress. Maybe when they got back, he'd treat her to a Zeltivan dinner. She seemed to really miss all things Zeltiva, for good reason.

Karyk felt a shudder in his rod, and looked up seeing the end bending hard. He immediately gripped tight and did a hard three turn reel in. His pole didn't bend further, as it might with a snag, but did continue to stay bent. He angled it toward the bow of the ship and furiously began reeling it in, arm burning. Whatever it was, it felt heavy. Just as it was about to breach the surface, all tension in the line was lost, and Karyk nearly lost his balance off the crate.

"Petchin' 'ell. 'Eavy petcher."

Karyk finished reeling in his line, seeing hook and sinker missing, and sighed. Sharay just sat there giggling as he redid his rigging, slipped on another worm and cast it as far out as he could manage, watching it plop down. It wasn't long until the line slipped back toward the wake, and once more Karyk leaned back to rest.

Too Much Time in the City (Part 1)

Postby Karyk on July 9th, 2017, 4:02 am

"Why's we goin' campin', Uncle?"

"I told ya, y'all need to learn some thin's. An' it ain't good for ya kids to be cooped up in that room."

Sharay leaned over and punched him in the arm as hard as she could. It didn't hurt, but the scowl on her face showed she wished it had, "I ain't a kid. Why's we goin'? We barely been here an' already goin' back out there?"

Karyk gave her a defeated smile, seeing just how much like her mother and his mother she was. "Nah, ya ain't, ya right. I ain't lyin', y'all need to learn some thin's. Bu' I need to get betta at 'em too. We ain't gonna live 'ere foreva lovebug. An' next time we leave, we gonna do it smart, do it right this time."

He saw Sharay's pole tip beginning to bend, and he nodded at it, so she'd look. Her face was startled, "Easy lovebug. 'ook is already set, just bring 'er in. Ya got this."

"Oy, petch ya!"

Karyk groaned, and looked over. He stuck his rod into the straps of his pack, cinching them around it, to make it harder for it to be dragged overboard should something bite. The twins had tossed their rods aside, and were wrestling with each other on the deck. Rolling all about, the two were fighting for leverage, not even punching, just trying to gain the upper hand.

Karyk didn't bother yelling for them to stop. They were Southwind men after all. He moved over to the pair, and bent down, grabbing Decker by the back of the shirt, pulling him off of his brother, holding him up like a kitten held by the scruff. He then grabbed Becker by the front of his shirt and lifted him up and held them both out in front of him, glaring at the two boys. Becker took a swing at Decker, and Decker kicked. "Oy, ya little petches, cu' the shyke."

Karyk brought them in close, glaring and scowling and showing his displeasure at them. "Y'all need to cu' it ou'. We only 'ave each other in this city. The four of us. Family is the most importan' thin'." The two started to squabble and complain and point out who started it, "Oy, I dun care. Y'all figure tha' ou' on ya own. Bu' no fightin'. Family fights with each other, for each other. Not against each other."

He dumped the pair to the deck, "Pick up ya rods. We dun' disrespect our tools. Those can save ya life one day. They ain't toys."

The two boys still kept shooting glares, but listened to their uncle, picking up their rods, and facing away from each other as they kept practicing their casting. Satisfied, Karyk returned to his seat to see Sharay putting a skinny fish that Karyk didn't recognize. He rubbed her curly mop of hair, "Good job lovebug." The girl beamed, and cast her rod once more.

Karyk unwrapped his rod from his pack and once more settled into the familiar relaxation that only came with fishing. A bell passed, and Karyk had reeled in his hook twice to find his bait missing. He assumed that the speed of the ship caused the bait to slip free. Casting the hook once more, Karyk watched Sharay pull in yet another of those small, skinny fish, grinning at her skill, and feeling a bit of jealousy at her luck.

Then he felt it. A slight bounce in the line. He'd sat there for a bell, feeling the steadiness of their speed, and this was something different. Karyk felt the bump again, and again. Each time with about two ticks between it. Karyk knew. That petching fish was taking his bait without around the hook. Karyk had an idea though. At that two tick mark, Karyk did a half reel, pulling the hook from the range of where he assumed the fish would bite.

Shortly after he felt the bump again. So he kept at it. Wait two ticks, reel it in, wait, reel it in. Make the fish over commit. Finally Karyk felt it was time. Wait two ticks, let it bite, then he yanked on the line, to set the hook. But he didn't feel the bite, that tell tale pull. He waited, and never felt the bump again. Karyk sighed, and reeled it in. Standing at the rail, Karyk watched his line breech the water, only to see a fish on it. Confused he brought it up, and saw that it was only about half a fish, a small version of what Sharay had been catching.

At best guess, Karyk seeing that from tail to stomach, the fish had been eaten by another. And with how small it was, and the ship's speed, he'd never felt this first one bite. Shaking his head, not even realizing such a thing was possible, Karyk dug out the hook, and tossed the half a fish into the lake, knowing that other fish would be fed off it, chuckling. Shows what he knew about fishing.

Looking up, he saw the shore approaching now. About damn time too. "Y'all get packed up, we're arrivin' soon." His first course of action would be to check in on the other two members of their smaller Southwind family, Bob and Susan.
