Samuel woke to the sound of excited yipping. He kept his eyes squeezed closed, wishing that the noise would stop. But Alice was awake, it was unlikely she would quieten down until she had something to eat. Even then the enthusiastic puppy would only be silent in the time it took her to wolf down whatever Samuel had given her. He rose with a sigh, then emerged from his tent into Syna's first light. Alice immediately bounced up to him, eyes shining and tail wagging. Fela also walked over, less boisterous but still wanting attention. A grin lit up his tired face. Although Alice had seemingly made it her mission to make sure he didn't get enough sleep, her enthusiasm nearly always made up for it.
After several strokes for each of them, he set to preparing some breakfast. Although Syna's rays had just started to peek over the horizon, he decided that he would eat at the same time as the dogs. He laid out some meat for each of them, Alice attacking the meal with gusto as soon as it was out of his hand. Then he cut a generous slice of cheese for himself with his belt knife and munched on it with some dried meat while he watched his companions. Alice finished her portion quickly, then tried to sneak some of Fela's from under the older dog's nose. A warning growl quickly put paid to that idea, so the puppy retreated and tried the same trick with Samuel's breakfast.
"No Alice." The warrior just managed to pull the meat out of her reach as she leapt for it. "You'll have to work if you want anymore." He crammed the rest of his food into his mouth and pulled himself to his feet. He brushed the dirt off his hands, it was time to try and train Alice.
