~A Guide to Canines~

Ravok is rumored to have been settled by the five families. Once the city was off and running, the competition to out do one another quickly became more than a game of one-ups and look-at-mes- it became a lifestyle. Deceit, sabotage, politics and outright discontent flowed from one door to the next and spilled into the canals. The bitter rivalries that rose and fell helped spurn the Floating City into what it is today; a pinnacle of hope and paradise amidst a world of chaos.

As time went on, politics became the preferred method of stirring the pot but it didn't completely discount other options. In the last few decades, a good deal of money, time and energy has been tasked with devising the newest means of outdoing one another. The families have all developed their own unique breed of dog. They hold a yearly pageant to show off the best of their bloodlines. (Holiday forthcoming)

:::OOC:::

These breeds are only available from the families. All dogs purchased must have ST approval. Please note that if not attached to the family that owns the breed, the price will be significantly higher. Families will NOT sell to each other.

:::Breeds:::

Nitrozian Terrier
ImageThe Nitrozians might be the most well-known family in Ravok. Their influence is hard to measure against the other houses but when a large portion of the population buy or rent their homes from one company, it's easy to see why the brand carries so much recognition. The Nitrozian terrier is no different. It can be seen all over the city accompanying the many family members and employees on everyday tasks. The big, curly beards are easy to spot just as the loud, hollow bark can be heard several canals over. These dogs love to search, hunt, fetch and fight. Some have even learned to fish since the breed, as a whole, are excellent swimmers. Rumor has it that the canines have a sixth sense for magic users because the bloodline has been infused with the blood of auristics mages. That's not the scary part, however, since the story tells of mages with the discipline being unwilling to part with their gift so they were fed to the dogs. L2 Animal Handling required for purchase.

ImageShoulder Height: [M] 25-32"; [F]22-28"
Weight: [M] 75-115#; [F] 54-90#
Lifespan: 10-14 years
Cost: 75 GM (Family Price-Trained); 285 GM (Market price-Trained)
Coat: Jet black. Coat is dense and wiry but sheds water extremely well. Breed will get 'dog smell' if not bathed regularly.
Demeanor: Terriers are tough dogs. They love to chase smaller creatures for sport or for the hunt and will readily engage in battles for territory. The require a good amount of training from a strong hand but are very loyal and dependable.

Lazarin Reaver
ImageThe Lazarin family is run by a man of terrible power but also great skill. It is fitting that his family's breed is a combination of many things. Perhaps the most diverse of the Ravokian canines, the Reavers are certainly in a class by themselves. They can hunt, track, fight, watch, swim or just sit still and look intimidating. Most are trained to fight alongside the Lazarins who serve in the Ebonstryfe. A companion and a war dog, the Reavers are smart enough to know when to follow or hang back as well as being quick learners. Though the dogs may be sold trained, the breed never stops learning.

They will memorize routes taken while errands are made. The dogs might recognize certain sounds, smells or sights and key into behaviors practiced frequently but it is their ability to improvise that makes them special. If a man and his dog walk the same patrol for twenty days then a tree falls and blocks the path, the dog will find a way around and get back to the original path long before his master ever thought about acting. Reavers can also be trained to motivate slaves simply by following one around and constantly harassing it to keep moving. The possibilities are literally endless. Some say that Lazarin cut tissue from his mark given by Rhysol to help create the Reavers' insatiable need to learn, create and destroy. There's also speculation that the dogs are novice hypnotists. If a person stares into the endless voids of the Reavers' eyes, he might just confess to his darkest secrets. L2 Animal Handling required for purchase.

ImageShoulder Height: [M] 16-26"; [F]13-22"
Weight: [M] 40-75#; [F] 30-65#
Lifespan: 15-20 years
Cost: 70 GM (Family Price-Trained); 250 GM (Market price-Trained)
Coat: Black, short, coarse hair with large wrinkles covering the body-especially the head and rump.
Demeanor: Reavers have the largest range of sizes and their personality also ranges greatly. Even though they are sold fully trained, each in this breed of canine is as individual as the people who buy them. More often than not,
the Lazarin handlers will let the dogs choose the human.

Valdinox Orians
ImageThe Valdinox are a family built upon faith,
craftsmanship and poise. The black-armed clan does not shy away from much in terms of investments and challenges but they might be the least interested in politics. Fervent members of the Black Sun and frequenters of the Temple, their devotion to Rhysol and his calling is far more important to them than sily games of chasing wealth and prestige for they understand that power is the only wealth that matters. It is in this spirit that they have chosen their breed. While the others used the model of Ravok's wolf who prowls the lakeshore and Wildlands, the Valdinox started with a bear -hence the name Orian, in honor of the goddess of bears. These massive canines are easily mistaken for bears but they are most certainly dogs. Huge, silent creatures, these companions are few in number compared to other breeds but they are the only ones that will literally clear a walkway. Their massive fur adds to the bulk so the sheer size is enough to drive folk into a ravosala or store. The dogs seem slow but that is because of their languid sense of fearlessness. When you're the biggest creature, you have little reason to hurry or fret. L1 Animal Handling required for purchase

ImageShoulder Height: [M] 36-42"; [F]33-39"
Weight: [M] 180-220#; [F] 150-195#
Lifespan: 7-10 years
Cost: 100 GM (Family Price-Trained); 540 GM (Market price-Trained)
Coat: Black with tan, brown, white or grey mixed.
Demeanor: Orians are very lovable dogs to the people they protect. Children climb on them and other animals scurry around them without much worry of being devoured. The massive canines have the best sense of smell as well as very thick pads on their feet. Despite being as large as most humans, they can detect the presence of an outsider from any edge of their domain and sneak up on them in absolute silence. They resemble bears when they are angry; bristling to increase their size, standing on their hind legs and revealing a wide, squared jaw full of powerful fangs. Some Orians have been known to tear through walls or sink ravosalas if the need for defending their owners was high enough. The dogs are also excellent in the water- not so much as swimmers but their natural buoyancy prevents them from sinking.

Black Lark Slaver
ImageLow hips, a lean form and powerful senses all go unnoticed when faced with the long snout full of long white teeth. Once a dog matures, their front canines will actually protrude from under their lips giving them a very malicious appearance even when they are calm. The dogs are well trained but they only listen to one or two people in their entire lives. Even if appearances relate otherwise, if a Black Lark is sold more than once, it's nothing ore than a ticking time bomb. There have long been suspicions that the Larks found a way to inject the djed of powerful morphers into their line. Canines are instinctual so if such a feat were possible, it would result in stronger bones, longer claws and a larger and more powerful jaw when the dog felt threatened. Regardless of the truth behind the matter, these canines are like fur bolts fired from a crossbow when given the order to attack. L2 Animal Handling required for purchase

ImageShoulder Height: [M] 22-24"; [F]19-22"
Weight: [M] 65-86#; [F]49-71#
Lifespan: 12-16 years
Cost: 50 GM (Family Price-Trained); 320 GM (Market price-Trained)
Coat: Double-coat, black. The Black Larks are essentially water proof but their longer top coat consists of fine hair and is very soft. They require extensive brushing on a regular basis to avoid knots.
Demeanor: Prowling or restless might be the best way to define the black shepherd. They don't like a lot of activity close to their owners and will use their bodies to weave in and out of strangers to separate them from their people. The violent and aggressive side to these animals is not a spectacle one wants to see from the receiving end. These animals are trained to make quick take-downs and kills on runaway slaves. They make excellent guard dogs but only if one has the mindset to match the animal's savagery.

Galatos Fog Hound
ImageThe Galatos breed is slim, fast and highly intelligent. The dogs tend to be silent observers in most cases and boast the shortest time in training. The breed gradually shifted over the years as Kelvic blood was injected repeatedly into the Ravokian wolf half-breeds until the wild was thinned down and replaced by consciousness. The eyes of these dogs give them away as being above the intellect born of most commoners. Capable of independent tracking and remembering a complex series of commands, these canines are almost better than owning a slave in some regards. It is rumors that the Kelvic experimentation has caused heavy imprinting with puppies almost to the point of a silent understanding with the owners. All Fog Hounds are sold after having been thoroughly trained by the Galatos handlers. There is no prerequisite for purchase.

ImageShoulder Height: [M] 27-28"; [F]25-27"
Weight: [M] 88-100#; [F]71-77#
Lifespan: 9-12 years
Cost: 65 GM (Family Price-Trained); 300 GM (Market price-Trained)
Coat: Black, Red, Blue, or Albino. All have fawn chests, bellies and feet. Hair is short and smooth but will become greasy if unattended.
Demeanor: Statuesque, these does love to watch and relax. They have their moments where energy will need to be purged with a good run or swim but expect this silent companion to prefer a place near its owner.
