The ST's Threaten Your Thread - Formally known as NPC Favor

Postby Autumn Leithea on January 8th, 2018, 12:41 am

I thought it'd be a neat mechanic that people have favor with individual NPCs or groups, measurable as any skill. An NPC or group will react differently based on the NPC/group's favor. For instance an NPC that gives out illicit contracts will not speak to you if your favor is low, will talk to you if your favor is higher, and eventually your favor will be high enough for the NPC to consider you for a contract.

Thoughts?

Within the Dungeons and Dragons DM Guidebook, there's a system in there called "Renown." It basically classifies a PC's status as a member in a certain Faction.

Edit: Reputation for a PC is just not the most simplistic thing for players to maintain.

Sunberth has Reputation Points; I'm not sure if Regime plans on scrapping that or modifying it in anyway, but the thread explaining it is still up in the city forum, so I assume it's still a thing.

I've also seen several players do this on their own. They put a section in their character sheet and keep track of their reputation with others, and others' reputations with themselves. This is usually more in regard to PCs than NPCs from what I've seen, though.

That being said, it might be interesting to see this sort of system implemented in more cities to see how PCs stand with government factions and individuals and such. It may be a more concrete way for STs to track a PCs relationship with important NPCs, as well.

Such 'reputation systems' have been tested and tried, but each have resulted in failure.

As it stands, the one written by Anarkhos is now defunct.

The reputation system will not be put into effect or modified. Besides you all naturally gain reputations as you actively thread in the form of earning appropriate lore specific to the situation.

If you actively thread, do things for a gang/groups, and meet important NPC's.

You will earn lore regarding the events. And in the eyes of those NPC's, you will no longer be faceless characters.
