An Unpredictable Thing
58th of Summer, 518 AV
Corin Row sighed, running his hand through his short brown hair as he stared down at his hastily scrawled notes, causing it to stick up in a mess of tufts in various directions. Strange things were happening in the city of Lhavit; strange and dangerous things. Corin was one of the many who was struggling to figure it out; the what and the why mostly, but also the how.
Finally, Corin had come to the conclusion that wild djed was somehow at play. It had something to do with the fog; he was almost certain. He was more privy to information regarding important things in the city than many other citizens were; he'd spoken recently to Orath from the Twilight Tower, and the Ethaefal had admitted to him that the Towers had been closed for the safety of both the students and teachers.
It seemed that whenever djed was used, even in the case of world magics, that strange things happened. Seemingly random magical side effects would plague the djed user; many of them were unsavoury or harmful, though a few could be used to the benefit of the affected. That is what had lead Corin to the theory that wild djed was somehow at play.
"None of this makes sense," He muttered, frustratedly, skimming his notes, seated at a desk in one of the classrooms of the Gateway. With his theory, Corin had decided to offer an impromptu lesson, free of cost, to any who wished to attend. He was going to discuss the theory of wild djed in an attempt to help other Lhavitians keep themselves safe; or as safe as possible, in any case.
Ruik hovered silently over Corin's shoulder, a constant and reassuring cold spot. "I've never seen wild djed act like this," The familiar finally admitted. Alone with Corin, he spoke audibly, his voice icy and echoing faintly.
"Because it doesn't, and yet it's the only explanation I can think of." Corin sighed, slumping back into his seat, absently smoothing down the mess he had made of his hair.
"I don't understand why you're giving this class. There is little one can do to protect themselves from the force of wild, untamed djed; especially the average person." Ruik spoke matter-of-factly, drifting forward to hover over the notes strewn over the desk; Corin's messy chicken scratch writing reflected in his mirrored surface as he skimmed the notes.
"Because, it's the right thing to do. People should at least know what they're facing, what's going on. To go around without knowing...it's dangerous, and they deserve to know. Knowledge is power, and all that."
Ruik didn't reply, but Corin could feel his begrudging acceptance of his reasoning. Reaching under his familiar, Corin snagged his notes, skimming through them once more; if indeed anyone was going to show up, then they should begin arriving any moment.
