Song for the Sky II

Improvising he picked up the star beside him, pointed to it, and raised his brow. Lani ducked her head and stood up, stepping forward and then hopping on the bed with him. She was much calmer now, getting used to this form easily now that she knew what it was. She didn’t have to act like a dog, she just was, her behavior coming natural to her body. She did have to deliberate human gestures though, and she didn’t know how to do it. Sitting on her haunches next to him, she picked up a paw and placed it on the rock, dragging it down on accident. He put it down because that’s what he thought she wanted. So she slipped her paw off and nudged it back up, swishing her tail in encouragement. Yes, yes! It is the rock!

“Is this was Evek meant when he said he thought it did something to you? Hmm, I really should not have let you touch it. I hope no one else messed with these things, they may not all have just embedded Kelvic powers into them…” He muttered to himself in Nari, as if she suddenly wasn’t there. She was still sentient! She could still hear him! She yipped, and he looked at her.

He was silent for a second, and then reached out slowly. She watched his hand as he placed it on her head and gradually dragged it down her back. It kind of felt nice to be touched like that, like a hug from a friend. But her ego would not let him pet her like a dog. She stood up, shifted her weight back into her haunches and let out a soft growl. Not too serious, but trying to tell him not to do it again. He playfully held his hands up in surrender “Okay, okay, I won’t! I was just curious.” He chuckled in Nari, and she relaxed, sitting back down again, wrapping her tail around and looking back up at him.

“Can you change back?” He asked her another question in Nari. She whined at him to remind him she didn’t understand and he nodded. Picking her Inarta shirt off the bed, he held it up and pointed to it. “Change back?” He repeated the last part, and she thought he was asking her to wear it. She would have frowned, but seeing as she couldn’t do that, she let out another soft guttural growl to reject the request.

“You can’t? Well petch. I mean you must have, have you changed before? Or was it… me?” He kept jabbering at her in Nari, how did he not get it through his thick skull that she could not understand him? She did not understand him when he was humanoid, she did not understand him now. And now she had less ability to communicate back to him. But she read the tone in his voice, and smelled a change in his scent when he said the last word. What was he on about?

Anger flared in her throat a little bit, and she stood up, pacing on the bed, ignoring him. She should just change back and put him in his place, but she didn’t know how to yet. If wild emotions could trigger the energy to change her into a Jackal, could they not to the same to turn it back? But if she was like a Kelvic, shouldn’t she be able to do this at will?

She sat down again facing away from him, and dug her claws into the mattress in frustration. She found the energy in her abdomen and then tried to tug and pull it out of her to bring her back to her humanoid form. The attempt made her a little queasy in her stomach, and she laid down on her front paws, ignoring Narth, and kept trying. A few ticks later, she felt his hand on her back again, petting her. She couldn’t help but feel the comfort he was trying to give her in the motion, but her ego was too great. She let out a slow growl, flattening her ears, and not looking at him. He stopped.

She was getting there. Still a little queasy, she latched onto the energy again, and dragged it over her, like a blanket that has been tucked into the mattress that she was trying to untuck without getting out from underneath it. It was hard, and frustrating, and it hurt a little, but it was possible.
She was in the senseless void again.

Song for the Sky II

When she returned, she was in her humanoid form, she sighed, relaxing into the comfortable body and turned over so he shoulders were facing up. Her hips were sideways, with her legs scrunched because Narth was sitting on the end of her bed, and she took long deep breathes with her normal sized lungs. She wasn’t queasy anymore, but glad to be back.

“How are you doing?” She understood this simple Nari phrase, and simply nodded, the movement moved her long straight hair over her bare shoulder, and she realized she was naked. Lani shot up, crossing her legs and grabbing a blanket from the ground, she slung it over her, and immediately frowned, it was wet. From her spilled drink. Narth laughed at her. “Oh, I don’t care, I’ve seen it all before.”

Lani interpreted the Nari and dismissive tone, and stuck her tongue out at him, grinning too. “Yeah, that is what the star did.” She spoke in common, and then stuck a hand out of the blanket motioning an up and down motion at herself before grabbing the rock and holding it up. He understood her miming.

“Oh, damn.” He sighed, grabbing the rock from her and pulling her into a hug. It felt supportive, but it gave her the same vibe the petting did, and she rejected it, sitting in his embrace but not embracing back. He noticed this and moved back, leaving one hand on her thigh, seemingly casual. She stared at it until he moved it off. “Well, it isn’t the worst wild magic to be cursed with. At least you didn’t grow a random limb.” He trailed off, knowing she didn’t understand what she said, but jabbering away the slight awkwardness her rejection just created.

There really wasn’t anything to say now that he has seen what the rock did to her. Lani stood, blanket still wrapped around him, and plucked her pants from the bed. She faced away from him, an dropped the blanket, slipping them on quickly. She cupped her breasts to hide them with her arm, and then turned back, looking for the Inarta top, the name of which she always forgot. He held it up teasingly. “Looking for your Vinati?” He asked, and Lani held her face, trying not to frown.

“Give it to me.” She spoke in common, holding out her free hand, he raised his eyebrow. She knew he wanted her to say please. She had heard him say a phrase when holding out his hand a few times, so she copied in in Nari. “Give it to me.” She repeated in his language. He raised both brows at the newly learned phrase, but did not give it over. Lani sighed, stooped and picked up the Katinu and slung it over her shoulder to cover her chest. She wasn’t going to play that stupid game.

Seeing that she thwarted his plan he let the Vinati drop, grinned and tapped the bed beside him. Lani knew men, and she knew she had a decision to make. He was an Endal, and she was an Chiet, he was a man, and she was a woman. Not that gender should mean anything, but it did in situations like these. She could leave, just walk out and not take the chance that he would try anything. She remembered when she had first met him in the stables, and had sized him up for these exact reasons. She had determined that he could overtake her easily, and that assessment was the same now, even though he was sitting and she was standing.

But last time she had sized him up, he hadn’t done anything and he could have. He had proved to her that he was a nice guy, and she had to take that into account. If she sat with him, he probably wouldn’t try anything. If she walked away, she would definitely alienate her only friend.

Song for the Sky II

Lani had hesitated just a little too long, and his smile faltered into a knowing look, just barely. Trying to keep him from having the same realization she did, she plopped down next to him, holding her Katinu closed with one hand and grabbing the rock with the other. She sat just far enough away from him that if he wanted to touch her, his move would be obvious. Acting as if she was focusing on it, she twisted the star in her hand. He leaned closer, and she shoved it toward him, using it as a block.

“Black Eyes.” He said her nickname, ignoring her offer, but recognizing the symbolic block that it was. She didn’t look at him, too aware of what could happen. She should have never let him in here. “Black Eyes, look at me.” His voice was forceful and even though she didn’t understand it, the emotion in it dragged her eyes up. “You have to trust me.” He said gravely, and she didn’t understand the Nari. She couldn’t decode the emotion in his voice to help her, and just stared at him, arm still extended between them holding the rock like a weapon that would defend her against anything he tried. She stared at his gravely, and without saying any words, they seemed to understand each other, and their places.

She feared him, not because he could physically harm her, but because they both knew he would win. And if he won, and he had the male urges that men had, she could do nothing against it. And that was just the physical level. On a social level, she had no right to refuse him. The caste system was such that respect could flow freely among the different levels, but the chain of authority was always apparent, no matter how friendly one was. He could do anything with little or no consequence, and she would likely be looked down on or attacked for refusing to comply.

But even as the understanding of power between them settled in his eyes, he sighed. “I’m not that man.” He said in Nari, clearly not anticipating her to understand. He stood, patted her on the shoulder, and led himself to the door. She had left it unlocked, and he opened it with ease. He turned in the frame to look at her, and she just looked at him. He nodded to her, waved, and waited. She gave it a tick before she waved back, offering a hollow smile that in no way expressed the emotions marinating inside her. He knew that, but offered a cheap grin of his own, and ducked out, clicking the door behind him.

Lani held the rock to her chest, tears spilling up over her lashes. She could hold it only for a few ticks, and then she cried.
