Spring 6th, 519av, 5 Bells
A few days later, Gemma was grateful both for the lessons she had learned from her dad and in her class a few days previously. She had taken lots of notes, and was pretty sure she was ready to apply what she had learned, but now at work. She had bought a full philtering kit for home, but the Catholicon had one so she was now using theirs. She was currently technically on a break from work, but with all the colds and flus in the ward, she felt she needed to do something more, even if she wasn’t getting paid for it.
She knew that she was new at this, and knew that her dad had said she might fail the first few times she tried, but she couldn’t help herself. She had all this information swimming around in her head about essential oils, but there were none of the essential oils she had heard about available for use. Thankfully, The Catholicon had everything she needed to get started. They had a storage room full of dried herbs, including all the oregano she could need.
They also originally had oregano essential oil, but she had kind of… used it all. Izo had warned her about this very problem, but she had been over zealous. Granted, her patients had gotten better swiftly, but she had probably given them more than they absolutely needed, leaving less for the other patients. It had been short sighted of her, but now she was hoping to rectify her error. She probably should have been working on this with her dad, or at least with someone monitoring her, but come on, it wasn’t so complicated… Right?
Gemma might have been overexcited, but she got to work. She struggled to set up the stand as she was supposed to, forgetting how to operate the shifting mechanism. It didn’t break, but for a long moment she had to stare at the device and check her notes before she finally found the little release that let her manipulate the height of the stand. She was aware that her time was running out. She only had fifteen chimes for her break, and it was looking like she wouldn’t even get to start the philtering process. But maybe if she could get the kit at least set up, she could come back later and work on it more.
She put the unlit brazier in place, remembering what her dad said about keeping it in the center. It might not have been exactly in the center, but that probably didn’t matter too much, right?
She then filled up the bottom glass with water, spilling some over the side, but otherwise having no problem. She put the glass on the brazier, but then she stopped. She remembered that the glass had not been on the brazier. But what was she missing? There was only one circle holder thing on the stand, and she needed that for the herbs. She looked around and finally found another circle of metal near the philtering kit. She fiddled with it, trying to get it onto the stand, but then she was out of time, having only just attached the second holder. She would have to come back later and continue the work.
