Berus’s eyes popped wide as Eisi, such a delicate beauty, leapt forward to help Darren and was brutally attacked by the crazy walking corpses. She fought extraordinarily well and seemed to possess all the fighting spirit of a veteran brawler. However, she was quickly pushed back against a wall by one of the Nuit and Berus, who really hadn’t contributed much thus far, knew he had to try something to help her before she got slain or eaten! He grasped his spear in relatively steady hands and plunged forward toward the walking dead person with only a little bit hesitation.
His feet slipped out from under him on the slimy floor almost immediately but he managed to fall down on his knees as he continued doggedly toward his target. The crazed walking cprose came on as well, toward the little woman with deadly intent in those corpselike eyes. Berus grimaced as he saw the tattered man lean toward the girl as if he was going to actually eat her! He was obviously feral and had lost all sense of humanity whatsoever and that registered in Berus’s mind, but to see the monster actually reaching toward the woman like an animal disgusted him beyond belief.
Berus finally slid to the feet of the Nuit and, as he thumped against it rather roughly, he thrust his spear awkwardly up the thing’s stomach and into its body. The wide point on the spear cut a wide slash into the body but snagged on the ribs of the creature. Berus looked up, waiting to see the creature fall over dead, but watched in amazement as it turned its attention toward him and rather offhandedly backhanded him with one rotting fist.
Berus went sliding away, eyes wide and still attempting to comprehend. The Nuit, though, found that the spear lodged in his body was more of a hindrance than it expected. Berus crawled back to his knees and, though swimming vision, saw the corpse-creature struggling to dislodge annoying pole. Frantically, the little bard reached for his lyre as a last-resort weapon.
