In a place like Sunberth where a good many people get by stealing what they can to survive, a place like The Fence thrives. Because a place like The Fence has what the back alley and a couple of strangers meeting in the dark do not. It has security, and a reputation for being reasonably fair which by Sunberthian standards means they won't try to rob you on your way out.
As such it has been a fixture in Sunberth for as long as anyone can remember. Located near the center of the city amidst the maze of slums that hug the river, one might find a sign at the end of a long stone building that reads 'The fence'. Below the sign is a roughly rectangular hole in the wall that extends inwards for a few meters until one comes upon a very large wooden door, bracketed with iron reinforcements. Near the top is a horizontal metal screen at just about eye level.
Upon knocking on that door, that screen would come open and a gravely voice would inquire, "What'll it be today?"
There would then be some noise, the clanking of metal then the door would swing open noiselessly. Inside, it was dark, and the front room was extremely small.
About four feet from the door was a high counter. There was no merchandise on display, and no price or inventory list. But if someone was looking for something that was considered illegal, or immoral, or just plain impossible to get in most of Mizahar, there was a fair chance that The Fence might have it. For a price, that is...
ServicesThe Fence has no set prices, nor a set inventory. You can come in and ask for just about anything. If the Fence has it or can get it, he'll let you know, and tell you the price. As a rule, anything purchased from this shop will be 1/4 more expensive than the listed price, and maybe even more depending on the item's rarity and uniqueness. All payments must be upfront.
If you want to see if he has something in stock or is willing to get it, pm Anomaly and you can roll for it. The Fence also buys lots of things, but get's grumpier than normal if you try to sell him something trivial. Selling to the fence can be self-moderated, however he will only buy goods at 1/3 the listed price unless you are competent at negotiating, which will bump it up to 1/2 the listed price. Experts can go a step further with selling their goods for 3/4ths of the listed costs, while only masters of negotiation can get full price for their stolen goods.
If you have any questions, feel free to pm Anomaly

It is hard to come away with a definite description of The Fence. That is because the proprietor seems to be always changing every other day although there is some consistency to the appearance of the person who stands behind the counter. Whoever they be, man or woman they will be wearing a dirty brown shirt with a patch over their right breast. That patch sewn onto the shirt will always say "ZEKE" much to the confusion of many visitors to the shop.
"Yeah, whaddaya lookin' fer?" Tends to be the standards opening line for anyone who enters the shop.
Unbeknownst to nearly everyone, they are all the same person, and that person is very particular about keeping their privacy.
