We all have a moment in our lives where we have an experience with one of our five senses that ignites a memory. This may be a memory that you haven't thought of in a while or even one that you completely forgot. Think of a smell that reminds you of something from the past or a sight that reminds you of someone or a taste or anything like that which reminds you of a past event.
This challenge is tied to that sort of thing with a bit of a twist. The challenge involves your character stumbling across a simple quill; a molted flight feather of a large bird used as a writing tool. This could be found in the wilds, a library or really anywhere...it's a feather. When you find this quill, it will inspire a memory. This memory should be one that you've forgotten, haven't allowed yourself to focus on or one that never really felt significant; one that you've had from time to time but never gave much thought.
You will feel compelled to reach out and touch the quill. As soon as you do, you are drawn into the memory. At first, it will feel as though you are simply embraced by the memory; recalling such past event. As you become fully engrossed in that memory, you will eventually realize that you have been pulled into the memory. It will feel real as if you are consciously in it. When you realize it is a memory, you will find that stray thoughts or actions will actually have some changes to what happens in that memory. What really happened, as you remembered, can be altered. This feels like a rerun of sorts except you find you are able to change some of the script. You are basically the writer of your own memory.
For example, have you ever had a memory of something from the past that you thought, "What if I would have said this instead? Or what if you would have responded with a different action?" What would have happened? Would it have turned out better or would it if turned out worse? What if you could have said what you really wanted to a loved one at a certan time or even to an an enemy? What if you could have acted in a way that would have changed everything you experienced from that point after?
The idea is that whatever the memory may be, you have the chance to rewrite it. As always, get creative. Push your character. Build them up or tear them down. Pick a single memory for your character and make some edits.
This challenge will go from this posting until Tuesday, February 14th at 11:59 pm Pacific Time. Word count is great but more importantly, dig into this and have fun. Content is most important. That said, let's go for 5,000k minimum with much more encourage.
As for an ending, the memory will eventually fade and your character will blink a few times before it all ends. They will find themselves holding the quill. What happens immediately after will be revealed at the end of the challenge.
