Basic Information

Race: Eypharian
Birthday & Age : 25th of Summer, 481 A.V. (30 years of age).
Gender: Male

Physical Description

Standing at 6' high, he is not a towering man but his strong legs and arms lend his physique an imposing presence nonetheless. When he walks, he walks with the rolling gait of a man who has spent a lifetime upon the sea. Dark brown hair, left unkempt upon his head - with light streaks of red henna dye through it. His eyes are a sparkling and lucid purple, with flecks of gold that enchant and broke no challengers - ringed and lined as is the custom with kohl. Skin a svelte olive, smooth and soft. His legs and arms, as befits his profession, are strong and muscular though as with all his race still maintain a lithe and natural beauty. Around his neck he wears a gold and pearl encrusted gorget that hugs the neck tightly and finishes just beneath the chin. He wears a finely made but austerely designed linen tunic. His kilt is a solid and deep red colour, with small emeralds set in silver dotting the bottom hem. Around his waist is tied a purple silk sash, from which hangs (on either side of his torso) a finely crafted saber - the scabbard of which is made of fine ivory. Also tucked away in the sash is a small dagger of similar construction. Upon each of the wrists of his 6 arms is a golden vambrace, encrusted with pearls.

Character Concept

Epiktetos is a man of the sea, and not unlike the vast ocean herself, Epiktetos is tumultuous, dynamic, dashing and destructive. A man of the South Winds, he lacks the finer erudition of some Eypharians but his lack of 'culture' has produced a more liberal mindset - reinforced by his profession. Despite this he is fiercely loyal and committed to his House and the Pressorah.

He is slow to trust, even his own kind, and suspects most peoples motives - Epiktetos has never encountered an altruistic soul, and seriously doubts they exist. Epiktetos is often cold and harsh, he takes no time to hide his meaning behind bluffs and double meanings. If a man is weak, and endangering his fellows Epiktetos will cut him loose without a second thought. This brashness has halted his advancement and progress within Eypharaian society - though given his own love for the freedom of the sea further climbing is distasteful to him.

An exception to his cold, and impersonal nature, is a softness of the soul towards children - of all races, most unusually in an Eypharian. He enjoys the sincere naivety of the young, the open and inquisitive nature, and is always quick to swoop them under his wing. Though there is a pang of disappointment, in that all children must grow up and in that act they will loose their innocence.

Character History

Epiktetos is the eldest male scion of the leading family of the House of the South Winds. A strong baby, he grew into a child the family could be proud of - even if the young child found more academic pursuits testing. His childhood was spent learning the skills necessary to advance his House, and thereby his people.

He eventually began training in the Guard of the House of the South Winds, and he was the pride of his father's eye. A charismatic young man, Epiktetos' father was disappointed however that his son did not try to further his position through any means other the straightforward attainment via merit. Epiktetos, did not covet any high honours, and preferred the freedom of lower orders - while he would never descend to being a commoner, or demean his blood - so his ascent was slower than less able men.

Epiktetos like all of his House, loved the sea and quickly took to it. He served predominantly under his father, protecting merchant shipping and occasionally subverting the attempts of other house's to interfere in the South Winds traditional arena.

Epiktetos was courted by many other noble families of the South Winds, his star was rising - even if his families was waining - but he was resistant to all attempts. It was one of the few occasions that Epiktetos and his father clashed, Epiktetos refusing to meet, bed let alone marry any of the women presented to his father for him. He never explained why, he simply said no in increasingly loud and tempestuous tones. The matter was continually broached but Epiktetos never explained and never changed his mind.

Epiktetos was promoted to a Hawk of the 3rd degree, in his 28th year. The promotion came after a daring boarding action, were Epiktetos not only aided in the repelling of forces boarding his father's vessel but also in single combat slew the opposing Captain and led the capture of the other vessel. His father was beaming, his mother sighing, and his brothers and sisters respectful. It was upon that day that his father shocked the entire House of the South Winds, in presenting his son with the Sword of the South.

In the two years since, his family's position has much diminished - not unlike his House's - with his father's passing, the Scepter fell to another family. Epiktetos has become more estranged and distant from his family, his own adventurous and liberal mindset jarring with them. He is desperate to take to the seas again, his crew and ship are ready, all he awaits is a fair wind and financier.
