It was raining. It wasn’t a hard rain but there was something different about it. After two sleepless days of watching and stalking, eyes bloodshot, he could see each drop pass his line of sight. His target, the wolf, was preparing to rest. The damned hound should be tired after stealing and eating Tuloth’s first rabbit of the trip. The beast had paws the size of small plates and when it bristled, it’s fur increases it’s size to that of a full-grown grizzly bear. Tuloth felt the icy fingers of fear creep around the back of his neck but refused to shudder. With the short bow given to him by his father, the fifteen year old Inarta clicked into motion. Tuloth moved in absolute silence being careful not to snap the twigs on his ghillie suit. He lifted one of the three arrows he’d been carrying in his right and notched it to the bow in his left. Never allowing his eyes to leave the wolf that was now circling the ground where it was going to nap, Tuloth raised the bow giving him a perfect line of sight down the arrow. Suddenly, the large beast stopped and stared directly at the young man. Tuloth froze. He had the perfect shot. He exhaled as he released the two fingers on his right hand. The arrow moved in slow motion as the rain had. It hit true in the wolf’s heart and knocked the beast to the ground. When the wolf’s rib cage slammed into the wet earth behind it, time regained its normal speed and Tuloth’s concentration was broken by the crashing of branches and bushes. The senior Kaervek came tumbling right past Tuloth. “C’mon! You have to complete the kill!” The sturdier man continued to move very quickly through the underbrush. Tuloth sprinter after his father after quickly slipping out of his cumbersome disguise. He caught up and nearly passed his old man but Tuloth’s father began to slow down and held his arm out to slow his son as well. The wolf howled very softly. The odd breathing noises and occasional gurgle indicated a lung had been punctured. Tuloth made a firm move past his father and drew the large serrated knife from his belt. He covered the last few feet slowly. This was not because he was overly brave but because he had confidence in the shot. It had seemed perfect. Tuloth circled around to the back of the wolf. It could follow its killer with its eyes but nothing more. The arrow would prove fatal, though the wolf did not seem quite so large now. Tuloth noted it was about six or seven feet long without it’s tail and fairly broad across the back. He knelt down to his knees quickly and continued the motion with his knife going through the ear and into the brain. The great animal was dead. Tuloth suddenly felt exhausted and sad. He sat back on his feet and stared at wolf’s lifeless body. He did not have much time to think. His father came into the small clearing and knelt next to slain creature. He drew the knife from the wolf’s ear and cut open it’s throat allowing blood to run out. He seemed to pull a large shot glass from nowhere. He filled it almost to the top and held it out for Tuloth. The young man took the glass from his father and was about to drink it when was hit by the warm sensation the wolf’s blood emitted. He paused for a second. “Drink it, boy.” His father placed his hand over the wolf’s ear and stared at his son. “This is a real hunter. Respect that.” Tuloth closed his eyes and tossed the blood into his mouth. It was warmer than he had expected and was very metallic in the way that it tasted. He opened his eyes and handed the cup back to his dad. |
