Physical Description
A towering warrior, Azurk looms at 7’4” and weighs around 300 lbs. His stature is notably grand even among his kin. Particularly to an outsider, by sheer appearance Azurk is intimidating. His hair is dark, as is usual for the Akalak, and he allows it to grow long, but ties it up conveniently, and when he does have it cut, he has it done short. His eyes are silvery cobalt, sleek like lightning. The muscular ridges on his abdomen and limbs seem sculpted, though this trait is common among the robust Akalak race.
Were it not for the markings of warning emblazoned across his face, Azurk would be recognized as slight more than a tall Akalak. However, Azurk is surely stained by the colorings of a Cerulean. On each cheek, red spirals are centered on pale blue blotches. Across his forehead, green and azure splashes meet and blend. To the wary, every decoration draws attention to his conflicted, unstable, and dangerous temperament.
Character Concept
On his brighter days, Azurk is reclusive. On his days of struggle, Azurk embodies the vicious turmoil of a wartime no-man’s land. To further complicate his social capacity, the unruly days, in which Kalik (Azurk’s cryptic dark brother) reigns, are occurring in an increasing frequency, inching evermore into the realm of the menacing.
Azurk is painstakingly considerate of detail and even, at times, romantic. Foregoing the superficial stereotype of the “cold warrior,” Azurk, like many of his misunderstood Akalak brethren, is actually deeply sensitive. His melodramatic internal perceptions of events, objects, and realities occasionally border on the quixotic.
Azurk’s brother soul is Kalik. This darker side is a brooding, cunning, and keen fighter. Indeed, like most Akalak dark brothers, Kalik is openly violent and gratuitous. Kalik harnesses most of the power in Azurk’s mind, and in fact prefers to be called Azurk (which can cause confusion among external parties). While Azurk once mustered resistance against Kalik, his resilience has faded to the point that he is only capable of controlling the soul whilst he is around good company. His continued chaotic behaviors have earned him further examination from the Elder Council, who are considering adding more tattoos to denote Azurk’s severe instability.
Within Azurk, there yet remains a dying sense of empathy and longing to reintegrate with the normal Akalak. Azurk still clings to admirable traits, but his status as a Cerulean accurately reflects his tendency to lose sight of them during his unpredictable yields to Kalik.
As these softer aspects of Azurk’s personality fade with his deteriorating will to preserve the good self, Azurk’s future, in turn, has darkened, for the trials of the present seem to gradually overwhelm the Akalak warrior.
Character History
Azurk was born to Riarik Avol, Akalak smith, and a Konti mother who was not a strong presence in his life. While his father had averted the way of the warrior, Azurk fell quickly into place with the more talented fighters of his generation. Indeed, for a great many years, Azurk appeared the model Akalak. His strength and skill was not such that he stood out among his brethren, but it was sufficient to suggest that he would someday fit well into the disciplined society. Riarik fostered Azurk’s inner restraint, being a very psychologically balanced Akalak himself.
The Rite of Trial represents brighter days in Azurk’s mind. The interwoven efforts of his hunting team were critically perfect. The hunt was exciting and smooth, and the pride felt by the youngsters upon return was a feeling that Azurk longed, and yet longs, to replicate. Even at this time, Azurk recalls a deep, inner insecurity—a second entity in his mind; silent and faint, yet present and observant.
Azruk continued developing his capabilities as a fighter. He saw little opportunity for pride in the “layman’s” trades, and sought the glory of hunt and battle (spurred on by the growing “other voice” in the recesses of his spirit). His abilities were satisfactory, and he wished them so, for he found himself more comfortable as a reliable part of a band, rather than a lone, exceptional gladiator. For in spite of all his dreams of heroic victory, Azurk suffered a fear of responsibility, (unnerved partly by the worry of his yet undeveloped brother soul) and he was thus unwilling to take the role of a leader or a stand-alone warrior. Azurk needed orders. He required direction.
He did not desire to undertake the Rite of Manhood alone, but he was pressured to do so by his father, his mentor, and his peers. To avoid disappointing his kin, Azurk did indeed go alone to slay a Zith, and he returned from the abnormally long mission, marred but successful. In the months following, Kalik truly bloomed—slowly, at first, with outbursts of rage and unusual, dark desires. In time his lapses in discipline accumulated, and Azurk fell into distrust among his combat comrades, leaving him more lonesome, as he feared to be.
An incidence of minor theft executed by Kalik (who sought a sanctioned fight in the Arena) brought Azurk to the attention of the Council of Elders. Azurk lost in the Gideon Combat Arena to the Esteemed Akalak whom he had robbed, and was required to make a payment to his accuser. The Council held Azurk under close watch.
Azurk did not impress. His increasingly serious misconduct left the Council little choice, and he was marked: tattooed, Cerulean. His family name forsaken, Azurk is now regarded with undertones of rejection in his own society.
He has continues combat training, primarily by himself, but occasionally with the guidance of other Cerulean cult members. He spends much of his time in Takula Outpost on the Cyphrus grasslands, outside the city. Riverfall itself often feels like a fading childhood memory to Azurk.
