My Past...
As a child, Talulah's mother would tell her stories about before the Valterrian. Tales of the Eypharian's beautiful cities, of the two warring empires. She would tell Talulah about all the cultures and peoples that were wiped out, about how the gods split Mizahar apart. Talulah loved these stories and it made her curious. She wanted to go out and see the world. But her parents refused to let her go anywhere alone and wouldn't bring her with them to cities. The best they could do was to tell her about how the world was now, trying to describe to her the vicious Myrians and the tiny Pycols. Unfortunately for them, this only made her more curious.
At five years old, she earned her windmarks. She had been hunting in the late evening, although everyone else had gone home and it was getting dark. She hadn't caught anything that day and refused to go home until she did. She had spotted a rabbit and had it in her sights when a slight movement rustled a bush and scared away the rabbit. She screamed in frustration and threw down her bow, stomping away towards home. But she spotted a faint glow farther away and decided to investigate it. She found the glow came from a pure white horse with black legs and a black and white mane. But, unlike most other horses, the horse walked to her and nuzzled her. Talulah realized that she had chosen her and named her Jewel.
Talulah was friendly with nearly everyone her age, though her stubborness and quick temper could drive them off sometimes. Even though she was friendly with most people, that didn't mean she had a lot of close friends, though she did have a few. Most of the time, she hunted or trained, unsure what to do and fidgity when she wasn't. As she grew up and her body matured, she drew the attention of boys but she grew shy around them. Only when she was on an adrenalin rush from hunting or training would she have enough confidence to talk to them. Because of this, during her teenage years she spent a lot of time on her own, though she did spend time with her friend, Denran Windweaver.
When Talulah was 15 she ran away from home, ignoring everyone's protests and warnings.
My Curse...
Talulah squinted and drew her arm back as she spotted another deer. She took a deep breath and let the arrow fly, holding that breath as she prayed for the arrow to hit her target. But once again, the arrow lodged itself in a tree next to a deer and it raced off. "Shyke!!!" she shouted loudly, stomping her feet and throwing down the bow and quiver. Hissed whispers of "Shhh!" and "You're going to scare off all the prey!" came from the others but she ignored them. She picked up a rock and threw it in the direction of the deer before turning around and going back to Jewel. As she mounted and started out of the stand of trees at a gallop, someone shouted after her, "Just because you can't shoot your target doesn't mean you have to scare off the deer we're trying to hunt!"
Talulah leaned against Jewel's neck and wrapped her arms around it, hands clenched into fists. She was angry and frustrated, these feelings and adrenaline running through her veins. "They can hunt! It comes naturally to them! They don't understand how hard and frustrating it is for me!" she ranted to her Strider, closing her eyes. But maybe she should've been paying attention because suddenly, with no warning whatsoever, Jewel reared and whinnied in surprise and fear, nearly throwing Talulah off. As her hooves hit the ground, Talulah sat up and looked at what had freaked out her horse. In front of her, and now charging away, was a small herd of Olidosapuxes. "Shyke!!" she shouted, as she veered away from the things that looked like fuzzy rhinos.
Talulah's sharp turn led Jewel galloping into another stand of trees. She dug her heels into the Strider's sides as she saw a small cave ahead and skidded to a stop. Taking a small knife from her pocket, Talulah approached the entrance and squinted as she peered into the darkness. A growling noise came to her ears and as her eyes adjusted, she saw a pack of wolves who looked like they weren't too happy with her intrusion. Without even thinking of what it might do, Talulah bent down and picked up a rock, throwing it at the biggest wolf. Of course, this only angered them more and the wolves started towards her.
"Shyyyyke!!!" she shouted for the third time today. "Petching animals!!" Talulah turned and ran as fast as she could to Jewel, feeling the wolves hot breath right on her heels as they snapped their jaws at her ankles. She jumped up onto Jewel, sprawling ungracefully onto the horse. The Strider needed no motivation and immediatly took off at a full gallop. Talulah clutched the horse's mane as she pulled herself up onto the horse properly and steered her towards home. As she came to the top of a hill and saw it, however, she heard screams and shouts, the crying of children. And the wolves were still after her.
Talulah spurred Jewel onward but the wolves, upon seeing and hearing her friends and family, decided to go after prey that wasn't yet running away. As Talulah stopped to let Jewel rest, she saw some of the wooly rhino things running off and some still here. They seemed to have crushed some of their food supply and livestock and the wolves went after what was scattered out in the open, as well as they people trying to restore order. She winced as she heard a scream that turned into a gargling noise and turned away. But as she did, she saw a woman that hadn't been there before. "How did she get here that quickly?" Talulah thought as she tried to discern the woman's features.
Before Talulah could open her mouth to say or ask anything, the woman spoke. The voice was powerful, resonating.
"Not once but twice today you have caused chaos and disrupted the balance of nature. For this Talulah Coldwind, you are cursed." |
